  • Publication number: 20090153811
Abstract: A method is described for multiple persons operating lasers to cooperatively project a pointillistic graphical image onto a remote surface. The visibility of the projected image depends on aiming the lasers with accurate relative displacements. Invariant features of the specific remote landscape where the image is to be projected are used as guideposts for maintaining these displacements. A set of transparent images is distributed to the laser operators, designating for each a spot to illuminate, superimposed on a scaled representation of the background landscape. In the preferred embodiment, each transparent image is used as a reticle, mounted into a monocular at its internal focal plane with the designated illumination spot centered on-axis. A laser is also rigidly attached to the monocular, with their optical axes parallel. Each operator aims his/her laser by visually sighting through the monocular so as to align transparent and direct views of the target landscape.

  • Patent number: 7540431
Abstract: A valve that includes a housing defining first and second bores having a central axis, and a peripheral valve seat. An actuator is located in the first bore and has a reciprocating seal disposed for movement along the central axis for engaging the valve seat and closing the valve. A coiled return spring is mounted in the housing for urging the reciprocating seal towards the chamber to open the valve, the return spring having a first end connected to the reciprocating seal and a second end engaging a spring support in the housing facing the first bore. The return spring may have a larger diameter at its second end than its first end. The housing may include a third bore in communication with the second bore and having a different cross-sectional area than the second bore. A closure cap formed from moldable material may close an opening in the housing, the closure cap being sealably joined to the housing by a welded joint.

  • Publication number: 20090126536
Abstract: Method and apparatus to make-up or break-out a threaded tubular connection using an integrated power tong and back-up tong (10). The power tong (20) may be disabled upon sensing a predetermined threshold amount of displacement of at least a portion of a back-up tong (14). The sensed displacement indicates that the back-up tong (14) is slipping, and power tong (20) rotation may be disabled to prevent damage to the pipe string (16) or surrounding equipment. A slippage sensor (40) may be disposed to sense displacement of at least a portion of the back-up tong (14) relative to a supporting frame (12). In one embodiment, the slippage sensor (40) may be operatively coupled to a valve (50) disposed in communication with a fluid line (46) supplying power fluid to the power tong (20). The power tong (20) may be disabled by impairing flow to the power tong (20) upon sensing a predetermined displacement of the back-up tong (14).

  • Publication number: 20090100222
Abstract: Mirror relationships between system drives may be detected and/or configured automatically by writing a predetermined data pattern to a predetermined location within a system drive and then checking one or more other system drives for a mirrored copy of the same data pattern. If the data pattern is found in another SD, then it can be assumed that there is a mirror relationship between the two SDs. Failure to find the data pattern in another SD, or finding the data pattern in multiple other SDs, may indicate an error condition. Once mirror relationships are discovered, the mirror relationships can be configured into the file server automatically so that the engineer does not have to manually configure the mirror relationships. The same mechanism can be used to check mirror relationships from time to time, for example, to detect possible problems with the RAID system.

  • Patent number: 7437133
Abstract: A front end for a radio frequency tuner, for example for connection to a cable distribution network, including an input connected to a signal path comprising an LNA connected via an AGC stage to a signal splitter. The input path has a bandwidth sufficiently wide to pass all of the channels in an input signal and has a substantially constant voltage standing wave ratio over the bandwidth. The splitter supplies identical signals to several filtering paths, each of which comprises a fixed filter. The paths are selectable one at a time and the filters divide the input frequency band into a plurality of contiguous or slightly overlapping sub-bands. The output of the front end is supplied to, for example, a double conversion arrangement comprising an upconverter and a downconverter with first and second IF filters.

  • Publication number: 20080234641
Abstract: The illustrative embodiments described herein are directed to an apparatus and method for managing reduced pressure at a tissue site. The apparatus includes a reduced pressure source that generates reduced pressure. The reduced pressure is delivered to the tissue site via a delivery tube. The apparatus includes a single pressure sensor. The single pressure sensor detects an actual reduced pressure at the tissue site. The apparatus also includes a controller. The controller determines a responsiveness of the actual reduced pressure measured by the single pressure sensor to an increase in reduced pressure generated by the reduced pressure source. The apparatus includes an indicator. The indicator emits a signal when the controller determines that the actual reduced pressure measured by the single pressure sensor is nonresponsive to the increase in reduced pressure generated by the reduced pressure source.

  • Publication number: 20080221892
Abstract: The autonomous avatar driver is useful in association with language sources. A sourcer may receive dialog from the language source. It may also, in some embodiments, receive external data from data sources. A segmentor may convert characters, represent particles and split dialog. A parser may then apply a link grammar, analyze grammatical mood, tag the dialog and prune dialog variants. A semantic engine may lookup token frames, generate semantic lexicons and semantic networks, and resolve ambiguous co-references. An analytics engine may filter common words from dialog, analyze N-grams, count lemmatized words, and analyze nodes. A pragmatics analyzer may resolve slang, generate knowledge templates, group proper nouns and estimate affect of dialog. A recommender may generate tag clouds, cluster the language sources into neighborhoods, recommend social networking to individuals and businesses, and generate contextual advertising.

  • Publication number: 20080222621
Abstract: A customised software application can be built for a specific type of Wireless Computing Device by (a) automatically determining attributes of that type of Wireless Computing Device; (b) automatically determining which Software Components from a library of Software Components are compatible with that type of Wireless Computing Device based on values of the attributes determined in (a); and (c) automatically combining the compatible Software Components together to generate a customised build of the application, compatible for that type of Wireless Computing Device. The attributes can be metadata. This approach enables rich Network Applications to be automatically built for Wireless Computing Devices of a wide variety of types.

  • Publication number: 20080216094
Abstract: An event handling system to schedule and translate semantic deductions form Intelligent Agents and sensors into events capable of being made observable by a Recipient system such as monitor that provides a particular view of virtual objects and events is disclosed. The event handling system also encapsulates the system's notion of time. In fact, a human observer can shift the system along the temporal axis (up to the present) in order to replay events, or undertake analyses as a result of speeded-up or slowed-down notions of system time. The event handling system receives events from Clients/Sources via connections through the event handling system Input Portals, and uses Shared Memory as its form of inter-process communication with the Monitors. The event handling system makes events available for a recipient observation sub-system to read and provide their particular view. There can be many Clients and Recipient systems connected to the event handling system at the same time.
