  • Patent number: 9207991
Abstract: Systems and techniques for computational load balancing. A problem space is partitioned into subspaces and the subspaces are assigned to processing nodes. The load of nodes associated with outer subspaces is compared with the load of nodes associated with inner subspaces, and partition boundary adjustments are made based on the relative loads of outer versus inner subspaces.

  • Patent number: 9210640
Abstract: A mobile station associated with a base station determines a measure of the quality of a communication link between the mobile station and the base station. The measure is determined by comparing either i) an expected data rate for communications over the link and an actual data rate of communications over the link, wherein the expected data rate takes into account radio frequency (RF) power levels of signals received at the mobile station over the link, or ii) an expected RF power level for communications over the link and RF power levels of signals received at the mobile station over the link, wherein the expected RF power level takes into account the actual data rate of communications over the link. This measure of the quality of the link may be a factor in triggering the mobile station to initiate a handoff.

  • Patent number: 9188542
Abstract: An apparatus for viewing images of a gemstone is described. The apparatus comprises a support structure for supporting the gemstone at an observation position. An illumination structure comprises a plurality of directional light sources directed towards the observation position so as to illuminate the gemstone. The support structure and illumination structure are relatively rotatable relative to one another about a rotation axis. An imaging device is arranged to obtain images of the gemstone at the observation position at a variety of relative rotational positions between the illumination structure and support structure: the imaging device has an imaging axis passing through the observation position. The support structure is arranged so that the gemstone can be placed at the observation position in such a way that the normal to a selected facet of the gemstone is within a range of tilt angles from the rotation axis.

  • Patent number: 9179399
Abstract: A mobile communication device identifies and selects a wireless local area network (WLAN) available for communications in its coverage area. Automatically, without detecting any requests made by a user via a browser application. The mobile device initiates a request (e.g. an HTTP GET request) to a predetermined server site of a communication network which is outside of the WLAN. In response to initiating the request, the mobile device receives a response message via the WLAN and identifies, from the response message, whether the request to the predetermined server site has been redirected to a redirect server site. The WLAN may be a WLAN “hotspot,” where the redirect server site is a login server. The identifying may be performed by comparing content from the response message to predetermined content of the predetermined server site. In response to identifying that the request has been redirected, the mobile device causes an indication to be produced at its user interface.

  • Patent number: 9160119
Abstract: An improved apparatus for charging a cell phone battery in the dark. An LED and its control circuitry including a control switch are included in a USB connector to automatically illuminate a cell phone and its charging port or receptacle or jack, which happen to be located in an unlit or pitch black space, when a user attempts to insert a USB connector plug into the charging port for purposes of charging the battery. The LED is automatically energized by the user's mere touching of the overmold of the USB connector at its flat or bottom side, without otherwise manually operating the control switch, and thereby eliminating hunting in the dark for a control switch on the USB connector. This apparatus is useful with both standard charging equipment and with dongle charging equipment.

  • Publication number: 20150264123
Abstract: A device in a peer-to-peer (P2P) group has the role of group owner. A different device in the P2P group may take on the role of group owner without ending the P2P group and create a new P2P group. Multiple P2P groups may be merged into a single P2P group. A single P2P group may be split into multiple independent P2P groups, each with its own group owner. A group owner of a P2P group may notify the client devices in the P2P group that it is about to leave the P2P group. A client device in a P2P group may be appointed in a new role of backup group owner, to take on the role of group owner in the event of a departure of the group owner, thereby providing continuity. Techniques for maintaining upper layer continuity through changes in topology of P2P groups are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20150223158
Abstract: A mobile device is within radio communication range of an access network. The access network is supported by a station (STA), such as an access point, a mesh node, or another mobile device. While the mobile device is not associated with the access network, the mobile device transmits to the STA a request for information about network capabilities of the access network. The STA receives the request and transmits to the mobile device a response conveying information about the network capability of the access network. That response is received by the mobile station. The request and response may be Access Network Query Protocol (ANQP) messages. A new ANQP element organizes information about multimedia capabilities of an access network (that is, how the access network is configured, if at all, to support multimedia). A new ANQP element organizes information about parental control and content filtering capabilities of an access network.

  • Publication number: 20150208324
Abstract: A station makes a unidirectional announcement (that is, an indication, notification or advertisement) of types of services that are available to devices in or via a wireless network, for example, a wireless local area network (WLAN). The announcement is receivable by mobile devices within radio communication range of the wireless network that are in the pre-associated state, because the announcement is conveyed using low-level layer 2 frames. A mobile device that receives such a layer 2 frame may determine the announced service type or types from the received layer 2 frame. The mobile device may determine whether it can make use of any of the announced service type or types. The mobile device may provide results of the determination to a network selection algorithm implemented at the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 9088414
Abstract: A determination is made as to whether a user has been logged off from the web-based application accessed through a web browser on a computer. If it is determined that the user has been logged off from the web-based application, then a new user interface is provided through the web browser. The new user interface may enable the user to enter user credentials. The user credentials are received through the new user interface. A request to validate the user based on the user credentials is transmitted. Upon transmitting the request to validate the user, an instruction to remove the new user interface is received when the user is validated. Upon receiving the instruction, a display of the web-based application is transformed by removing the new user interface.

  • Patent number: 9071570
Abstract: A portlet may be selected from among one or more portlets rendered by an origin server. The origin server may have an object listening for pointer activity wherein a user event triggers selection of a portlet. The origin server, in response, may send state information of the portlet in the form of a key to a client, often operated by a user. Client may later send the key to a disjoint server, wherein the key is integrated into a portal containing services that the client subscribes to. Thus a persistent session may exist between the disjoint server and the origin server based on the user's preferences.
