  • Publication number: 20140350754
Abstract: A system and method of generating a landing trajectory for use in landing an aircraft onto a deck of a waterborne ship includes sensing motion of the ship, and sensing wind speed and wind direction. The sensed motion of the ship is processed to generate estimates of ship attitude and vertical speed, and the sensed wind speed and wind direction are processed to generate estimates of air-wake disturbances ahead of the aircraft. The landing trajectory is generated based on the estimates of ship attitude and vertical speed and the estimates of air-wake disturbances. The system and method implement model predictive control to calculate the control maneuvers multiple steps ahead, which provides the capability to smoothly control the timing of the aircraft touchdown phase.

  • Publication number: 20140316261
Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting biometrics using a life detecting radar are disclosed. Life detecting radars can include transmit antennas configured to transmit continuous microwave (“CW”) radio signals that reflect back upon making contact with various objects. The signal can be systematically varied in frequency to provide a signal that is essentially continuous with short gaps between transmissions at different frequencies. The reflected return signals are received by one or more receive antennas and processed to detect one or more targets. The received signal can include a static (i.e. constant phase) signal corresponding to reflections from objects that do not move. The received signal can also include a phase varying signal that corresponds to reflections from a living target having measurable biometrics including (but not limited to) breathing patterns and heartbeats. Clutter can be removed and the remaining portions of the received signal are analyzed for target detection.

  • Publication number: 20140250074
Abstract: Systems and methods that enable removal of data from an endpoint, while not propagating such removal to other endpoints when synchronizing data sources associated therewith. A designation component can indicate items as forgotten items, wherein such items are being known to an endpoint and deleted therefrom—yet, reintroduced therein and reappearing (e.g., as a create) upon re-synchronizing with the replica over again. Moreover, the forgotten items can employ additional metadata such as in from of an additional bit that indicates whether an item is a forgotten item.

  • Publication number: 20140217195
Abstract: A nacelle is configured to be coupled to an underside of a wing and forms a clearance space between the nacelle and a leading edge slat of the wing. A portion of an outlet cowling moves longitudinally aft when a reverse thrust configuration is activated and the leading edge slat is deployed toward the nacelle. The outlet cowling also includes another portion located adjacent to the leading edge slat that does not move when the reverse thrust configuration is activated and thus maintains its clearance space from the leading edge slat.

  • Patent number: 8794833
Abstract: A novel bag for holding, transporting, and pouring a bulk product is provided. The bag comprises two handles, with one handle being primarily configured for carrying (but also useful for pouring), and the other being primarily configured for pouring. The handles are positioned on adjacent sides of the bag, with the pouring handle being positioned near the bottom half of the bag to facilitate a controlled tilting of the bag. In one embodiment, the bag also includes a third handle on the same side of the bag as the pouring handle. The bag is typically formed of plastic, and can be used for salt, animal food, and other pourable products. The bag has a very high strength, with the second handle being particularly strong as a result of a longitudinal seam positioned adjacent that handle.

  • Patent number: 8766975
Abstract: A method for navigation comprises constructing a current map that includes two-dimensional or three dimensional representations of an area, detecting one or more edge features on the current map, and generating a first fine-edge map based on the edge features. The method further comprises retrieving a historical map that includes two-dimensional or three dimensional representations of the area, detecting one or more edge features on the historical map, and generating a second fine-edge map based on the edge features. Thereafter, a coarse version of the current map is generated from the first fine-edge map, and a coarse version of the historical map is generated from the second fine-edge map. The coarse versions of the current and historical maps are then correlated to determine a first position and orientation. The first fine-edge map is then correlated with the second fine-edge map to determine a second, more accurate, position and orientation.

  • Publication number: 20140169620
Abstract: Apparatus and methods consistent with the present invention provide for identifying and processing mail using an identification code on a mailpiece as a redundant source of identification information in a mail sorting system. In one embodiment, this information is stored in a temporary database and used for the identification and processing of mail in a Remote Bar Code System (RBCS). In this embodiment, the identification code enables the automation of mail sorting and other processing tasks, reducing costs and delays in mail delivery services. In another embodiment, the identification and processing of mail occurs in an Identification Code Sorting (ICS) system. In this embodiment, a long-term database allows for mail sorting and other processing tasks on a national or global level.
