  • Publication number: 20070079715
Abstract: An offset lithographic printing press combined with a gapped or seamed cylindrical offset printing blanket having pre-made blanket material mounted on a cylindrical sleeve is disclosed, wherein conventional, manufactured blanket material in flat form is adhered to a cylindrical sleeve to economically produce a cylindrical sleeved blanket. The leading and trailing ends of the flat blanket material are joined in close proximity such that a small gap is formed. A seam may be made with a filler material that fills the remaining gap resulting in a seamed sleeved blanket. In use, the blanket's printing surface, which excludes the gap or seam, is aligned with the printing plate's image-bearing surface. Consequently, no loss of print length results from the gap or seam.

  • Publication number: 20060124022
Abstract: The present invention is a controlled expansion projectile (20) having a bonded rear core and includes a metal jacket (22), a dense core (24), and a tip (26). Metal jacket (22) includes a nose portion (28), a middle portion (30), and a heel portion (32). Nose portion (28) includes a front cavity (34) and heel portion (32) includes a rear cavity (36) defined by sidewalls (40), an open end (42), and heel (44). Dense core (24) is typically formed from lead but may be formed from lead compounds or other heavy metals. Dense core (24) may be enclosed in rear cavity (36) using a closure disc (48) joined with heel (44) to seal open end (42). Dense core (24) is joined with sidewalls (40) thereby forming a bond (52). Bond (52) may be a metallurgical bond (54), a mechanical bond (56), or an adhesive bond (58). Tip (26) is at least partially inserted in front cavity (34). Sidewalls (40) of rear cavity (36) are softened during either a metallurgical bonding process or other processes.

  • Publication number: 20060090664
Abstract: A shellcase body for use as part of an ammunition cartridge, which includes a base portion at one end, a middle portion having a substantially straight sidewall and joined with the base portion, and a shoulder portion joined to and extending from the middle portion. A neck portion may be joined to and extend from the shoulder portion. The shoulder portion is typically annularly shaped and includes a semi-circular sidewall that extends between an aft end and a fore end. The semi-circular sidewall has a curvature that is defined by a circular arc having a predetermined radius and a center that is positioned a distance away from the shellcase body center longitudinal axis. The shoulder portion is joined with the straight sidewall at a secant point of the circular arc, i.e., the straight sidewall defines a secant line that intersects the circular arc at the aforementioned secant point.

In use, the seam is aligned with the non-print area on the adjacent printing plate, or the adjacent plate cylinder gap of the printing press. Being narrower than the plate cylinder gap, no loss of print length results from the seam.

  • Publication number: 20020159571
Abstract: A system (10) for controlling use of or access to a second system, such as a telephone or other communication device, based upon an identifying biological characteristic of a user. The system comprises the telephone (12), including a keypad (14); a display (18); a biometric input device (20); and a controller (24). The controller (22) includes a compact single board computer (24) with an embedded operating system, such as a microkernel version of the Linux operating system, requiring approximately eight megabytes of memory. A person desiring to use the telephone (12) presents the biological characteristic, such as a fingerprint, to the biometric input device (20). A biometric template is created and compared to a resident template database of authorization information. Using a “one-to-many” search engine, requiring approximately 1 megabyte of memory, the present invention is able to perform a linear search of 500 templates within 1.5 seconds or less.
