  • Patent number: 9300587
Abstract: A first number of wireless devices in communication with an access node over a first frequency band is determined. A total bandwidth and a spectral efficiency of the first frequency band are determined, and a throughput provided to each of the first number of wireless devices in the communication between the access node and the first number of wireless devices is calculated. Based on the total bandwidth of the first frequency band, the spectral efficiency of the first frequency band, and the throughput provided to each of the first number of wireless devices, a second number of wireless devices permitted to communicate with the access node over the first frequency band is determined. To determine a third number of wireless devices permitted to communicate with the access node over the first frequency band, the throughput provided to each of the first number of wireless devices is adjusted.

  • Patent number: 9232365
Abstract: Push-to-talk messages are sent via a wireless multicast channel to multiple push-to-talk groups of devices regardless of group membership. Thus, all of the devices using the multicast channel receive all of the push-to-talk messages. To separate messages bound for one push-to-talk group from those bound for another, a push-to-talk group specific orthogonal code is applied to each message. The devices in a specific group use the group specific orthogonal code to decode the received multicast messages. If a device decodes the multicast message with the correct group specific orthogonal code, then the message is decoded and the device can play the message. If a device decodes the multicast message with a different group specific code (i.e., because it is not a member of the group the message was intended for), the message is will not be properly decoded and thus will be unplayable or scrambled.

  • Patent number: 9137683
Abstract: A first cell is selected as a center cell for testing. Downlink transmissions from a one or more surrounding cells are loaded with test load levels. The downlink transmissions, when loaded with test load levels, include a selected amount(s) of the data portions of their transmission frames carrying orthogonal channel noise (OCN). A performance indicator of the center cell is measured/determined while the surrounding cell(s) are transmitting test load levels and while the center cell is communicating user traffic between the center cell and a first plurality of wireless devices. The test load levels of the surrounding cells may also include user traffic in addition to the OCN.

  • Patent number: 9124333
Abstract: A method, system, and medium are provided for improving uplink performance of an antenna array configured for downlink beam forming. Beam forming requires an antenna element spacing that results in correlated downlink signals. Uplink reception preferably uses an element spacing such that uplink signals are uncorrelated. For an eight-element antenna configured for beam forming, using eight-branch combining to produce a single resultant signal is thus less than optimal. In an embodiment, non-adjacent elements in the antenna array, which receive uncorrelated signals, may be combined in pairs with two-branch combining. The four resultant signals may then be combined using four-branch combining to provide a single resultant signal.

  • Patent number: 9001817
Abstract: A method of operating a communication system comprises sending a frame by an access node to a wireless device where the frame comprises a packet. A counter is initialized and a timer for each frame is initiated. The method continues with the access node determining if a response associated with the packet is received before the expiration of the timer. If the response is received prior to the expiration of the timer, the counter and the timer are reset. If a response is not received prior to the expiration of the timer, the counter is incremented. Upon the counter meeting a criteria of a certain quantity of lost packets, the access node performs a synchronization process.

  • Patent number: 8880007
Abstract: In systems and methods of reducing latency in a wireless communication system, a first signal of a first radio access technology and a second signal of a second radio access technology are received at a first antenna and a second antenna of a wireless device. From a first circulator the first signal received at the first antenna and the second antenna are received and combined to generate a combined first signal. In addition, from a second circulator the second signal received at the first antenna and the second antenna are received and combined to generate a combined second signal. While receiving the first signal of the first radio access technology, a call request is received over the second signal of the second radio access technology.

  • Patent number: 8837271
Abstract: A downlink resource block in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system can be shared among multiple wireless communication devices (WCDs) by assigning one or more orthogonal codes to each WCD. To transmit data to the WCDs using the downlink resource block, a base station may receive a data stream that includes respective data for each of the WCDs and encode each WCD's respective data with a respective orthogonal code assigned to that WCD to generate an encoded data stream. An OFDM transmitter in the base station may receive the encoded data stream and transmit the encoded data in the form of OFDM symbols in the downlink resource block. A WCD can receive the downlink resource block, recover the encoded data from the OFDM symbols, and use the one or more orthogonal codes assigned to it to recover the data for that WCD from the encoded data.

  • Patent number: 8175063
Abstract: Systems and methods for Walsh code assignment are provided. In accordance with the disclosed exemplary embodiments, when a set of mobile communication units (MU) is in a control/hold state, instead of a base transceiver station (BTS) assigning Walsh codes for respective dedicated control channels (dcch ) to the set of mobile communication units (MU) on a one-to-one basis, the base transceiver station (BTS) circulates the Walsh codes among the set of mobile communication units (MU). Thus, at a given time, the base transceiver station (BTS) has assigned the available Walsh codes to only a subset of the mobile communication units (MU) in the control/hold state. Accordingly, this Walsh code assignment allows the system to support more mobile communication units (MU) in the control/hold state.

  • Patent number: 8098748
Abstract: Systems and methods of testing a wireless network are provided. Simulated user data, spread across all user data sub-carriers of all sub-channels of a frequency band assigned for transmissions, is transmitted by a number of base stations surrounding a base station under test. The power level of the simulated user data is determined based on a selected network load. A mobile station receives signals from the base station under test and the number of base stations, and the interference caused by the simulated user data to the transmission from the base station under test is determined. When less than 100% loading is employed for testing, the sub-channels carrying the simulated user data can vary on a frame-by-frame basis.

  • Patent number: 8050236
Abstract: A wireless communication system is disclosed comprising a communications network; and a plurality of base transceiver stations (BTS) coupled to the communications network. At one of the BTS is adapted to send traffic data modulated onto orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) tones to mobile units, and send control data modulated onto code division multiplexing (CDM) codes to the mobile units. The BTS may be further adapted to send pilot data modulated onto OFDM tones to the mobile units. The transmission of the data may be compatible with HSDPA and/or IP Wireless protocols. Because the modulation scheme for the traffic data is OFDM instead of CDM, higher throughputs may be achieved in an HSDPA and/or IP Wireless-based wireless communication systems.
