  • Patent number: 6289892
Abstract: The present invention includes a method for treating a patient in need of facilitated oxygen delivery through the lungs, additional lung surfactant, removal of material from inside the lung, or inflation of collapsed portions of the lung, comprising the step of introducing into the lung of the patient an effective therapeutic amount of a fluorocarbon liquid, the amount not exceeding the functional residual capacity of the lung of the patient upon exhalation taking into account any positive and expiratory pressure applied to the patient's lung. The method may also comprise the additional step of providing an oxygen-containing breathing gas to the patient while the fluorocarbon liquid is in the lung.

  • Patent number: 6234963
Abstract: A system and method is described for determining and graphically displaying oxygenation states of a patient in real time. The system is non-invasive and can display information to a physician that is intuitive. Various display objects are described for illustrating the output of oxygenation values. The display objects reflect the in vivo physiology that they measure, thus making interpretation of the measured values very intuitive.

  • Patent number: 6041777
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided which allow for closed-circuit ventilation for the treatment or diagnosis of disorders. The closed-circuit ventilation apparatus of the present invention provide a closed-circuit respirator that isolates the gas flow path from the ventilator apparatus. This allows the prolonged administration of expensive materials such as fluorochemicals without excessive loss due to evaporation. As such the provided methods an apparatus are particularly applicable to liquid ventilation including partial liquid ventilation and total liquid ventilation.

  • Patent number: 6007774
Abstract: A method for treating conditions associated with ischemia or infarct is disclosed which includes the steps of administering a biocompatible non-blood oxygen carrier while monitoring one or more oxygenation indices to maintain oxygenation of the patient's tissues at or above a predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 5865784
Abstract: A method for hemodiluting a patient is disclosed which includes the steps of administering a biocompatible oxygen carrier in conjunction with surgery or organ ischemia or infarct while assessing the patient's PvO.sub.2 or other oxygenation indices, and administering to the patient additional oxygen carrier or autologous blood in response to the PvO.sub.2 value if necessary to maintain the PvO.sub.2 at or above the desired level.

  • Patent number: 5743022
Abstract: A dryer arrangement for use in the production of a dried cast sheet, in particular reconstituted tobacco sheet, is formed of a plurality of steam plates in side-by-side arrangement providing a substantially flat surface. The plates are hollow and a heated fluid is fed to the interior thereof. A slurry of sheet forming material is cast at one end of the flat surface. The cast sheet material travels over the steam plates under momentum imparted thereto by the belt dryer, if used, and/or is transported for example by a heat conductive plastic belt driven over the upper surface of the steam plates to provide good heat transfer between the sheet material being dried and the flat surface of the steam plates.

  • Patent number: 5388850
Abstract: A convertible sulky is interchangeable between stand-up and sit-down configurations so as to allow a mower operator to operate the mower from either a standing or seated position behind the mower. The convertible sulky comprises an H-shaped support wheelbase frame, to opposite legs of which a pair of wheel-mounting columns are affixed. Attached to the H-shaped support wheelbase frame member is a T-shaped mower attachment frame, having a central leg, an upper end of which is inclined forwardly H-shaped support wheelbase frame for attachment with the rear of the mower, by means of a ball-hitch fixture. A pair of generally L-shaped foot plates are secured to the frame structure formed by the T-shaped mower attachment frame and the H-shaped support wheelbase frame.

  • Patent number: 5277017
Abstract: A transformer unit mountable above the cutting deck of a mid-size, walk behind rotary mower, effectively converts the mower into a riding mower. The transformer unit is configured so as to allow an operator to be seated above the cutting deck, while still being able to comfortably control the mower by means of the original operator control handle, which is relocated by the transformer unit to the front end of the mower. The transformer unit comprises a support frame which is affixed to a cutting deck support structure. The support frame includes a vertically tiltable floor unit that extends over the top of cutting deck. An auxiliary operator control handle attachment fixture is mounted to the forward end of the support frame adjacent to the front end of the mower and is configured to engage and support the operator control handle, such that the operator control handle extends above the cutting deck adjacent to a position where the operator is to be situated.
