Identification information for identifying a content supply source is recorded in a recording medium in correspondence with the content supplied from the content supply source and recorded in the recording medium. When editing of the content is requested by a user, the identification information corresponding to that content is checked. According to the content supply source identified by the identification information, the editing of the content is enabled or disabled.

Abstract: A security unit to prevent unauthorized retrieval of data includes an encrypting unit for encrypting data in accordance with commands received by the security unit, and a common register for storing both intermediate results and final results of the data encryption. A switching element operatively coupled to the register selectively outputs the contents of the register. The switching element is controlled to prevent external access to the intermediate results of the encryption. The security unit is particularly useful as part of a memory unit that is attachable to a recording/reproduction device such as a digital audio recorder/player.

Each piece of data recorded on the recording medium may be examined to determine whether it is re-recordable by determining whether the data is already stored in another storage medium. When data erasure is requested, erasure processing may be controlled in accordance with the result of the determination. For example, original data based on data captured by a microphone or a camera (namely, non-re-recordable data) may not be erased (without specific approval by the user). Conversely, re-recordable data copied from another recording medium such as a CD may be erased.

Abstract: A data processing apparatus is disclosed, that comprises a large capacity memory means for storing a plurality of files, a memory means for storing move/copy history when a particular file is moved/copied from the large capacity memory means to a non-volatile memory, a reference menas for referencing the history information stored in the memory means when the particular file is moved/copied from the large capacity memory means to the non-volatile memory, and a control means for prohibiting the particular file from being moved/copied from the large capacity memory means to the non-volatile memory when the reference means has detected that the history information is stored in the memory means.

Abstract: A reproducing apparatus and method, the method comprising the steps of comprising recording a plurality of files and number-of-reproduction-times limitation information thereof, selecting a desired file from the plurality of files stored in the memory, and comparing whether the number-of-reproduction-times limitation information allows for reproduction of the selected file. The method further comprises the steps of counting the reproduced elapsed duration of the selected file and comparing whether the reproduced elapsed duration exceeds a predetermined value. A random number generating unit generates a number that is used to select a master key and a corresponding identification key at the mutual identification units. Abstract: The present invention provides a data processing method and apparatus capable of shortening the processing time required when editing previously encrypted track data. An example of a transfer of audio track data between a portable player and a storage device is provided. The track data is comprised of one or more parts, each of which in turn is comprised of a series of data blocks. Each block of the track data is encrypted prior to transfer using a block key. The block keys are determined in such a manner that subsequent editing of the track data which results in redistribution of the parts does not require full decryption of the data.

Abstract: A data communication system for distributing music data files between a server and a client removably connected to the server. The system transfers music data files and corresponding management data from a client to a server. The server then determines whether the music data files were previously stored in the server on the basis of the corresponding management data transferred from the client and a management data file in the server. If it is determined that the music data files were previously stored in the server, the music data files transferred from the client are stored into their previous locations in the server. In this manner, the music data files may be repeatedly moved to and from the server and maintain their ordering on the server.
