  • Patent number: 6907184
Abstract: An editing apparatus wherein the editing of content is controlled according to its supply source. Identification information for identifying a content supply source is recorded in a recording medium in correspondence with the content supplied from the content supply source and recorded in the recording medium. When editing of the content is requested by a user, the identification information corresponding to that content is checked. According to the content supply source identified by the identification information, the editing of the content is enabled or disabled.

  • Publication number: 20050060540
Abstract: A security unit to prevent unauthorized retrieval of data includes an encrypting unit for encrypting data in accordance with commands received by the security unit, and a common register for storing both intermediate results and final results of the data encryption. A switching element operatively coupled to the register selectively outputs the contents of the register. The switching element is controlled to prevent external access to the intermediate results of the encryption. • Publication number: 20040225827
Abstract: A recording apparatus for facilitating data erasure operations involving data recorded on a recording medium. Each piece of data recorded on the recording medium may be examined to determine whether it is re-recordable by determining whether the data is already stored in another storage medium. When data erasure is requested, erasure processing may be controlled in accordance with the result of the determination. For example, original data based on data captured by a microphone or a camera (namely, non-re-recordable data) may not be erased (without specific approval by the user). Conversely, re-recordable data copied from another recording medium such as a CD may be erased.

  • Patent number: 6807024
Abstract: A reproducing apparatus and method, the method comprising the steps of comprising recording a plurality of files and number-of-reproduction-times limitation information thereof, selecting a desired file from the plurality of files stored in the memory, and comparing whether the number-of-reproduction-times limitation information allows for reproduction of the selected file. The method further comprises the steps of counting the reproduced elapsed duration of the selected file and comparing whether the reproduced elapsed duration exceeds a predetermined value. The number-of-reproduction-times limitation information stored in the memory is edited when the reproduced elapsed duration exceeds the predetermined value to reduce the number of times the selected file may be subsequently be reproduced.

  • Patent number: 6799273
Abstract: A storage unit in a first mutual identification unit stores master key data and a second storage unit in a second mutual identification unit stores identification key data. A random number generating unit generates a number that is used to select a master key and a corresponding identification key at the mutual identification units. The first mutual identification unit generates an estimate of the selected identification key using the selected master key and uses this estimate as a common key when performing mutual identification with the second mutual identification unit.

  • Patent number: 6792539
Abstract: The present invention provides a data processing method and apparatus capable of shortening the processing time required when editing previously encrypted track data. An example of a transfer of audio track data between a portable player and a storage device is provided. The track data is comprised of one or more parts, each of which in turn is comprised of a series of data blocks. Each block of the track data is encrypted prior to transfer using a block key. The block keys are determined in such a manner that subsequent editing of the track data which results in redistribution of the parts does not require full decryption of the data.

  • Patent number: 6691149
Abstract: A data communication system for distributing music data files between a server and a client removably connected to the server. The system transfers music data files and corresponding management data from a client to a server. The server then determines whether the music data files were previously stored in the server on the basis of the corresponding management data transferred from the client and a management data file in the server. If it is determined that the music data files were previously stored in the server, the music data files transferred from the client are stored into their previous locations in the server. In this manner, the music data files may be repeatedly moved to and from the server and maintain their ordering on the server.

  • Patent number: 6618789
Abstract: A memory unit such as a memory card is removably attachable to a data processing unit such as a digital video recorder or an audio recording/reproducing unit. The memory unit includes a non-volatile memory, a security unit for protecting the security of data stored in the non-volatile memory, and an interface that receives control data from the data processing unit. The control data is either first control data for a read or write operation with respect to the non-volatile memory, or second control data (different from the first control data) for a security operation of the security unit. Thus, a security-type memory card is compatible with both a security type and a non-security type data processing unit.

  • Publication number: 20030142960
Abstract: A reproducing apparatus has three reproducing modes that are a first mode, a second mode, and a third mode. In the first mode, when a program that has been reproduction restricted is tried to be reproduced, the reproducing operation is paused and the user is asked whether he or she wants to reproduce the program. Corresponding to the user's reply, the reproducing operation is performed or prohibited. In the second mode, a program that has been reproduction restricted is prohibited from being reproduced. In the third mode, a program that has been reproduction restricted is unconditionally reproduced. When the power of the apparatus is turned on at step S31, a prompt that causes the user to select one of the first mode, the second mode, and the third mode is displayed. At step S33, a process for designating a mode is performed. Information of the designated mode is stored in a nonvolatile memory.

  • Patent number: 6601140
Abstract: A technique to determine whether a memory unit currently attached to a data processing unit is of a predetermined type or types. When the power of the data processing unit is turned on, it is determined whether or not a memory unit has been attached to the data processing unit. Thereafter, data is read from a boot block of the memory unit. With reference to identification information of the boot block, it is determined whether or not the attached memory unit is a first type memory unit, such as a security type memory unit. If the attached memory unit is a security type memory unit, an authenticating process is performed. After the memory unit has been authenticated, contents data may be recorded or reproduced. If the attached memory unit is not a security type memory unit, a message that represents that the memory unit cannot be used may be issued.
