  • Patent number: 4206175
Abstract: In an aspiration chamber of a carbon black reactor, the discharge end of a hydrocarbon inlet and the aspiration inlet of a hydrocarbon reaction section are arranged in such a proximate relationship that the hydrocarbon feed entering from said inlet into said reaction section aspirates surrounding hot combustion gases. The aspiration chamber has a wall converging from the end to which the reaction section is attached towards the end to which the hydrocarbon inlet is attached. Inlets for the combustion gases comprising coal are provided for the tangential feed of the combustion gases into the annulus formed between the reaction section and the converging wall of the aspiration chamber. At least one ash outlet for discharging the ash from the chamber is arranged upstream of the discharge end of the hydrocarbon feed means.

  • Patent number: 4191542
Abstract: A process for filtering carbon black-containing gas wherein an optimum of carbon black recovery is achieved by filtering at least the critical filtration time and up to 50 percent, preferably up to 20 percent, longer than said critical filtration time before backflowing. The critical filtration time is that filtration phase at which the linearly plotted curve of the initial pressure drop versus the filtration phase has an inflection point. Specific formulae are given for a Teflon filter bag and carbon blacks of about 80 to about 130 square meters per gram nitrogen surface area.

  • Patent number: 4093705
Abstract: Carbon black is produced by heating a carbonaceous feed material to an elevated temperature to decompose the feed material to produce carbon black. A sample of the effluent from the reactor is passed as a suspension of carbon black particles in a gas into an optical cell. A beam of light is directed into the cell, and scattered light is measured at two different locations. A signal representative of the ratio of the two measured scattered light intensities is employed to control the introduction into the reactor of an alkali metal which controls the structure of the carbon black produced.

  • Patent number: 4085197
Abstract: A carbon black process is disclosed wherein a hydrocarbon feedstock is axially introduced into a tubular reactor at one end, carbon black-bearing smoke is withdrawn at the other end, a first vortex of hot combustion gases is created around the hydrocarbon feedstream, and wherein a second vortex is created upstream with respect to the first vortex, said second vortex being created under such conditions as to exert an aspirating effect on the gases of the first vortex so that an axial prolongation of the zone of hot combustion gases of the first vortex moving around the hydrocarbon feedstream is created upstream of the first vortex. A reactor shaped to carry out said process is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4072468
Abstract: An apparatus for producing carbon black by pyrolytic decomposition of coal with hot combustion gases. In a cylindrically shaped vertical reactor coal is tangentially introduced, thus establishing a helically flowing mass of pulverized coal. This mass is contacted with hot combustion gases. Fine ashes are withdrawn from the upper portion of the reactor at the periphery and coarse ashes are withdrawn from the lower portion of the reactor from the periphery. Carbon black-containing gases are withdrawn from the area of the vertical axis of the reactor overhead.

  • Patent number: 4058379
Abstract: A method and apparatus for filtering solids from a gas stream is disclosed wherein the flow of the gas stream through a filter medium is stopped after a filter cake has built up consisting of the solid particles having been filtered out of the gas stream, wherein a plurality of cleaning gas streams is generated that sweep and remove the filter cake built upon the filter medium. The cleaning gas streams are emitted from pipes which also function to support the filter medium.

  • Patent number: 4048063
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for settling small particles of micron and submicron size from a liquid in which the particles are contained. The method of the invention entails introducing the particle containing liquid into an apparatus of this invention. The apparatus is a settling vessel having vertical dimensions sufficient in relation to the overall capacity of the vessel to allow establishing a temperature gradient between the upper and lower portions of liquid contained therein with the vessel sufficiently insulated to minimize changes of the temperature inside the vessel in response to changes in the ambient temperature outside the vessel and also having means for supplying indirect cooling heat exchange within the lower portion of the vessel and indirect heating heat exchange within the upper portion of the vessel to induce a constant temperature gradient within the vessel.

  • Patent number: 4048067
Abstract: Solids contained in liquids can be effectively separated therefrom by tangentially introducing these liquids into a downwardly converging conically shaped chamber, the walls of which consist of material porous to the liquid but impervious to the solid materials, withdrawing lean liquid from the axial upper portion of the chamber and collecting the clean liquid from the exterior of the chamber wall.

  • Patent number: 4046864
Abstract: A carbon black process is disclosed wherein a reactor is employed having in open axial alignment and operatively connected with each other an axial zone, an enlarged precombustion zone and a smaller Venturi-shaped reaction zone. Into this reactor hydrocarbon feed is axially introduced, from 90 to 30 volume percent of the gases forming the hot combustion gases are introduced tangentially into the precombustion zone, and from 10 to about 70 volume percent of these gases are introduced into the axial zone. In a preferred embodiment the carbon black reactor has an axial zone with an internal diameter of about 1.5 to about 3 times the diameter of the throat of the Venturi-shaped reaction section.

  • Patent number: 4007001
Abstract: New combustors, and methods of operating same, which produce lower emissions, particularly lower emissions of nitrogen oxides and CO, are provided. A first stream of air is introduced, either radially or axially, to a first combustion region of the combustor. A second stream of air is introduced tangentially into said first combustion region. A third stream of air is introduced tangentially into a second combustion region of the combustor. The amount of said first stream of air admitted to the first combustion region is varied in accordance with the fuel flow to said first combustion region.
