Publication number: 20140179459Abstract: A golf club head comprises a front portion, a rear portion, a toe portion and a heel portion that together form a two-piece body and for which a center of gravity is defined. The body comprises a central portion as a first piece and a frame as a second piece. The frame encloses a substantial portion of the central portion within an XY-plane. The central portion is connected with the frame with fasteners along at least the front portion. The moment inertia of the club head about a z-axis of the center of gravity is between about 7,000 kg·mm2 and about 14,000 kg·mm2.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 20, 2012Publication date: June 26, 2014Applicant: TAYLOR MADE GOLF COMPANY, INC.Inventors: Chris Schartiger, Peter L. Publication number: 20140171216Abstract: A face insert for golf club head in one embodiment can comprise a substrate comprising a score line groove-free front surface. A cover layer is provided at least on the front surface of the substrate. The cover layer can alternatively overlay at least a portion of the peripheral edge of the substrate. The cover layer comprises a ball-striking surface spaced by the cover layer from the substrate. Plural elongated score line grooves can extend into the polymer layer from the ball-striking surface. In addition, visible markings are interposed between the cover layer and the front surface of the substrate, the visible markings being visible through the cover layer. In one form the visible markings comprise elongated score line markings and target markings in a central portion of the substrate. The visible markings can be screen-printed markings, which are then protected by the cover layer from wear. The cover layer can be molded and can be a polymer layer.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 19, 2014Publication date: June 19, 2014Applicant: Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc.Inventors: Mark Lin, Bing-Ling Chao, Citra A. Ie, Todd P. Beach, Benoit Vincent, Peter L. Larsen, Marc Kronenberg, Drew T. DeShiell

Publication number: 20140155194Abstract: Disclosed herein are various embodiments of a golf club head having improved mass distribution characteristics. The golf club head includes a body and a face positioned at a forward portion of the body. The golf club head also includes one or more mass elements positioned at predetermined locations about the head. The mass elements assist in achieving a desired relationship between the moment of inertia about a center of gravity x-axis and the moment of inertia about a center of gravity z-axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 10, 2014Publication date: June 5, 2014Applicant: TAYLOR MADE GOLF COMPANY, INC.Inventors: Todd P. Beach, Peter L. Larsen, Joseph Henry Hoffman

Patent number: 8636609Abstract: Wood-type golf club heads have dent resistant crowns with surface areas configured so that at least about 50% of the crown surface area is associated with a crown thickness substantially equivalent to a critical thickness. A critical thickness is generally associated with a higher dent resistance than crowns that are substantially thinner or thicker. Wood-type golf club heads also have crowns with radii and spans that are substantially equivalent to critical crown radii and critical crown spans. Such wood-type golf club heads also exhibit surprisingly superior dent resistance than would be expected for a crown of such thickness.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2007Date of Patent: January 28, 2014Assignee: Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc.Inventors: Bing-Ling Chao, Peter L. Publication number: 20130331201Abstract: Iron-type golf club heads are disclosed having a heel portion, a sole portion, a toe portion, a top-line portion, a front portion, a rear portion, and a striking face. The iron-type golf club heads include a flexible boundary structure (“FBS”) that is provided at one or more locations on the club head. The flexible boundary structure may comprise, in several embodiments, a slot, a channel, a gap, a thinned or weakened region, or other structure that enhances the capability of an adjacent or related portion of the golf club head to flex or deflect and to thereby provide a desired improvement in the performance of the golf club head.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 14, 2013Publication date: December 12, 2013Applicant: Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc.Inventors: Bret H. Publication number: 20130318772Abstract: An iron-type golf club head is disclosed having a heel portion, a sole portion, a toe portion, a top-line portion, a front portion, a rear portion, and a striking face. A back wall is also disclosed in the rear portion enclosing a portion of the rear portion to create an enclosed cavity. The cavity is defined by at least a rear surface of the striking face, an inner back wall surface, and the sole portion. A plug and a filler material is located within the enclosed cavity. The filler material surrounds the plug and is configured to hold the plug in place. The plug is lighter than the filler material.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 6, 2013Publication date: December 5, 2013Applicant: Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc.Inventors: Bret H. Wahl, Peter L. Larsen, Loren Stowe

Publication number: 20130316842Abstract: Clubs and clubheads are disclosed that allow the swing-weight thereof to be easily changed by attaching or exchanging a “weight-assembly” having a first portion configured as a “weight insert,” a second portion configured as an overcap, and a third portion configured as a drive screw. The drive screw extends through the overcap and into the weight-insert to assemble the weight-assembly, which fits into a weight-receiving cavity on the clubhead. These three components are made of respective materials (having respective densities) that are selected so that each component contributes a desired fraction of the total mass of the weight-assembly to the clubhead to achieve a desired change in swing-weight. By mix-match selection of the components, a wide range of masses of the weight assemblies can be made, with small increments therebetween.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 1, 2013Publication date: November 28, 2013Applicant: Taylor Made Golf Company, Inc.Inventors: Paul M. Demkowski, Bret H. Wahl, Peter L. Larsen, Scott Edward Folck
