Patent number: 9250653Abstract: Techniques for presenting content provided by a mobile device on a second communication device are presented. A content enhancer component (CEC) connects via a wired or wireless communication connection to the second communication device to communicate content to the second communication device, which has a larger display than or superior audio to the mobile device. The CEC captures content and interaction between the user and mobile device in a capture region of the CEC. The CEC reconstructs the content and the user-related interaction for presentation on the second communication device. The second communication device can have a 2-D or 3-D display. If a 3-D display, the CEC can convert captured video content into a 3-D format to provide 3-D perception when content is displayed on the second communication device. The captured audio signal can be processed to provide an enhanced stereo or 3-D sound effect.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2012Date of Patent: February 2, 2016Assignee: CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONGInventor: Peter Wai Ming Tsang

Publication number: 20150353996Abstract: A label free, reusable and high sensitivity viral fiber sensor is provided in the present invention. The label free, high sensitivity and reusability are the advantages of this sensor. Long Period Microfiber Grating (LPMFG) is used for the sensing device. It allows optically detecting the change in refractive index at the grating surface with an extra high sensitivity. This provides an optical detection method to monitor DNA Hybridization. The single stranded DNA (ssDNA) probe is immobilized onto the LPMFG's surface for hybridizing with a DNA sample in order to identify the viral strain in the sample. This LPMFG-based viral sensor functions by inducing a refractive index change on the grating surface through the bio-molecule binding between the target viral ssDNA and the immobilized probe ssDNA. Regeneration of a surface-immobilized probe without a significant loss of hybridization activity retains at least 10 successive assays without any significant loss of performance (less than 10% decrease).Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2015Publication date: December 10, 2015Inventors: Yeuk Lai HOO, Haifeng XUAN, Ka Lok WU, Xin SHI, Tik Ho LAU, Peter Wai Man LEE

Patent number: 9164481Abstract: Techniques for generating 3-D holographic images of a 3-D real or synthetic object scene are presented. A holographic generator component (HGC) can obtain a real or synthetic 3-D object scene. The HGC generates a high-resolution grating, and generates a low-resolution mask based on the 3-D object scene. The HGC overlays the mask on the grating to generate the hologram, which can be a digital mask programmable hologram. The HGC can use the grating as an encryption key, if desired, wherein the mask can be encrypted based on the encryption key. The display component receives the hologram and can generate holographic images, based on the hologram, and display the holographic images using one or more low-resolution displays. The grating and display can be arranged in various formations in relation to each other. A single display can be partitioned into a tile structure for displaying holographic images in the respective tiles.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 2012Date of Patent: October 20, 2015Assignee: CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONGInventor: Peter Wai Ming Tsang

Publication number: 20150277377Abstract: Fast processing of information represented in digital holograms is provided to facilitate converting a complex Fresnel hologram into a phase-only hologram, which can be a localized error diffusion and redistribution (LERDR) hologram, for displaying 3-D holographic images representative of a 3-D object scene. For a complex Fresnel hologram representing a 3-D object scene, a holographic generator component (HGC) can directly apply an LERDR process to the complex hologram to facilitate converting the complex hologram into an LERDR hologram. As part of the LERDR process, the HGC can partition the complex hologram into segments, convert the complex values of the pixels in each segment to phase-only values, and apply error diffusion to each segment to facilitate generating the phase-only hologram. The HGC can apply error redistribution to the last pixel of each segment to produce the resulting LERDR hologram, which can be displayed on a phase-only display device.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 16, 2014Publication date: October 1, 2015Inventor: Peter Wai Ming Tsang

Patent number: 8890931Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices that generate and display a holographic image(s) of a 3-D real or synthetic object scene are presented. A holographic generator component (HGC) partitions a 3-D object scene into a horizontal stack of regularly spaced vertical sub-planes that are each contributed to a respective sub-line. The HGC converts the sequence of sub-lines into a collection of diffraction patterns, which are summed up and interfered with a reference beam to generate the complete hologram, which can be or can approximate a Fresnel hologram. A multi-rate filter is employed to facilitate converting sub-lines to diffraction patterns more quickly. The multi-rate filtering can be realized using convolution in the spatial domain, realized in the frequency domain using a fast Fourier transform, and/or realized in the frequency domain using a graphic processing unit.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2011Date of Patent: November 18, 2014Assignee: City University of Hong KongInventors: Peter Wai Ming Tsang, Kayton Wai Keung Cheung

Publication number: 20140210942Abstract: Techniques for fast processing of information represented in digital holograms to facilitate generating and displaying 3-D holographic images representative of a 3-D object scene are presented. A holographic generator component (HGC) can receive or generate information representing a 3-D object scene. In real or near real time, the HGC can back-project a hologram to a virtual 2-D image known as a virtual diffraction plane (VDP); process the VDP to enhance optical properties of the VDP to facilitate enhancing or adjusting the optical properties of the 3-D holographic images when displayed by a display component; and expand the VDP to facilitate generating 3-D holographic images that can represent or recreate the 3-D object scene. The HGC can thereby process digital 3-D holograms of moderate size and display 3-D holographic images generated from the processed 3-D holograms at a desirably fast video rate.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 23, 2013Publication date: July 31, 2014Applicant: City University of Hong KongInventor: Peter Wai Ming Tsang

Publication number: 20130113795Abstract: From only a single two-dimensional source image (20) of a scene, multiple images (28) of the scene are generated, each image from a different viewing direction or angle. For each of the multiple images, a disparity (24) is generated corresponding to the viewing direction and combined with significant pixels (e.g., edge detected pixels) in the source image. The disparity may be filtered (26) (e.g., low-pass filtered) prior to combining with the significant pixels. The multiple images are combined (64) into an integrated image (62) for display, for example, on an autostereoscopic monitor (10). The process can be repeated for multiple related source images to create a video sequence.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 26, 2010Publication date: May 9, 2013Applicant: City University of Hong KongInventor: Peter Wai Ming Tsang
