  • Patent number: 8424429
Abstract: A saw includes a surface defining an opening therein, a plate structure configured to be attached to the saw below the surface, and an arm attached to the plate structure about a first shaft. A blade is configured to be engaged with the arm at a location spaced from the first shaft. The blade extends through the opening when the saw is in a normal operating position. The saw includes a firing mechanism including a barrel end portion having a bore defined therein and an extendable piston at least partially positioned within the bore. The barrel end portion is attached to the plate structure. The extendable piston engages the arm during its extension and causes the arm to pivot about the first shaft when the firing mechanism is activated by an activation signal. The pivoting of the arm causes the blade to be moved downwardly below the surface.

  • Patent number: 8275554
Abstract: Systems for differentiating the lengths of nucleic acids of interest in a sample are provided. The system includes a microfluidic device, a detector, and a software system. The microfluidic device includes an amplification microchannel or microchamber containing a reaction mixture under conditions that provide one or more amplicons of the nucleic acid of interest. The detector is integral with or proximal to the microfluidic device and is configured to detect the amplicons as one or more signals from a homogenous mixture. The software system interprets one or more coincidentally detected signals to indicate lengths of one or more individual nucleic acid molecules of interest, thereby differentiating the lengths of the nucleic acids of interest.

  • Publication number: 20120012069
Abstract: Operations in a livestock facility can be automated and made more efficient by utilizing an interrogator system that reads and writes data to tags associated with livestock. For instance, gates can be automated to sort livestock based on data read by interrogators from tags and livestock can be identified for examination when data suggest that their behavior deviates from expected or normal behavior. The tag associated with a livestock can carry and accumulate information across multiple facilities throughout the livestock production and processing cycle. Gathering information across facilities allows for more informed decision making and a more cooperative approach to improving the livestock production and processing cycle.

  • Publication number: 20110118139
Abstract: An array of transportable particle sets is used in a microfluidic device for performing chemical reactions in the microfluidic device. The microfluidic device comprises a main channel and intersecting side channels, the main channel and side channels forming a plurality of intersections. The array of particle sets is disposed in the main channel, and the side channels are coupled to reagents. As the particle sets are transported through the intersections of the main channel and the side channels, reagents are flowed through the side channels into contact with each array member (or selected array members), thereby providing a plurality of chemical reactions in the microfluidic system.

  • Publication number: 20110088159
Abstract: A wall-entry bathtub includes an entry wall movable between a raised position and a lowered position to provide convenient ingress and egress. A handle assembly is coupled to a pair of latches and brackets to selectively restrain the wall-entry bathtub in the raised position. A counterweight assembly is coupled to the entry wall and reduces the force required to move the entry wall between the lowered and raised positions. The entry wall also includes a seal member that is expandable to inhibit water from leaking past the entry wall when the wall-entry bathtub is in use. Dual drains are provided to reduce the time required to drain water from the wall-entry bathtub. And, a controller, in combination with a variety of sensors, applies predetermined logic to control the water filling, entry wall sealing, and water draining of the wall-entry bathtub.

  • Patent number: 7902639
Abstract: Improved methods and articles providing conformal coatings for a variety of devices including electronic, semiconductor, and liquid crystal display devices. Peptide formulations which bind to nanoparticles and substrates, including substrates with trenches and vias, to provide conformal coverage as a seed layer. The seed layer can be further enhanced with use of metallic films deposited on the seed layer. Seed layers can be characterized by AFM measurements and improved seed layers provide for better enhancement layers including lower resistivity in the enhancement layer. Peptides can be identified by phage display.

  • Patent number: 7715211
Abstract: According to an example embodiment of the invention, a configurable printed circuit board (PCB) includes one or more separable portions for supporting modules for interfacing with the PCB. The separable portions extend from an edge portion of a main body of the PCB, and are disposed between the main body of the PCB and a protective portion. A scored portion is provided at a boundary between the main body of the PCB and the separable portions, the separable portions being separable by being broken off from the main body of the PCB at the scored portion. According to an example embodiment of the invention, a method of configuring a PCB having one or more separable portions of the PCB includes securing the PCB and separating the one or more separable portions of the PCB from another portion of the PCB.
