  • Patent number: 7105300
Abstract: Nucleotides and nucleotide analogs are used in various sequencing by incorporation/sequencing by synthesis methods. Nucleotide analogs comprising 3?-blocking groups are used to provide reversible chain-termination for sequencing by synthesis. Typical blocking groups include phosphate groups and carbamate groups. Fluorescent nucleotides are used to perform sequencing by synthesis with detection by incorporation of the fluorescently labeled nucleotide, optionally followed by photobleaching and intercalating dyes are used to detect addition of a non-labeled nucleotide in sequencing by synthesis with detection by intercalation. Microfluidic devices, including particle arrays, are used in the sequencing methods.

  • Patent number: 7087895
Abstract: A pointed carbon fiber electrospray ionization emitter has a length of electrically conductive fiber that is present within a lumen of a microfluidic device, and protrudes from the terminus. A point is present on an end of the electrically conductive fiber, or the electrically conductive fiber is otherwise sufficiently small on the end to create a desired spray. A conductor supplies electrical current to the electrically conductive fiber. Fluid to be sprayed is transported through the lumen and out of the terminus of the lumen, and an electrical field established by the conductive fiber distributes and sprays the fluid. The emitter is rugged and is able to generate stable electrospray over a wide range of flow rates, voltages, and surface tension variations.

  • Publication number: 20060107826
Abstract: A system and method of enhancing guitar instruction based on Tablature Plus encoding of playing techniques within a MIDI file or other data structure, that may be rendered on an associated player application that provides multimedia output of the piece being played including a number of playing techniques. The system hardware for encoding the information includes string motion monitoring, and optionally a hand motion and finger positioning sensor, such as a data glove or a video motion capture system, for simultaneously registering the actions of the guitarist while playing the piece. The software comprises algorithms for determining note pitch and duration, and for extracting playing techniques from the data being collected. Multimedia player software is also described which renders a visual and audio output for the Tablature Plus encoded file, wherein the encoded playing techniques are represented within the display output. The system is adaptable to instruction for any instrument.

  • Patent number: 7001496
Abstract: A channel (140) is divised into portions (142, 144). The sidewalls of each channel portion (142, 144) have surface charges of opposite polarity. The two channel portions (142, 144) are physically connected together by a salt bridge (133), such as a glass frit or gel layer. The salt bridge (133) separates the fluids in channel (140) from an ionic fluid reservoir (135). To impart electroosmotic and electrophoretic forces along the channel (140) between parts A and B, respectively. Additionally, a third electrode (137) is placed in the reservoir (135).

  • Patent number: 6956668
Abstract: A method of copying a document onto a receiver such as paper includes taking the characteristics of the receiver into account in selecting pigments for making the copy. The characteristics may be determined by scanning the receiver to determine its color, finish, texture, etc. If the characteristics are other than a given standard such as white, the pigments necessary to render the receiver area(s) white are determined. Concurrently, the pigments needed for copying the document onto the receiver are also determined. An image processor then generates copy pigment data from the receiver and document pigments and transmits the data to a print engine in the form of toner data. If the copy pigment data might produce too dark a copy, the data is modified uniformly to reduce pigment percentages.

  • Patent number: 6547942
Abstract: The present invention provides for techniques for transporting materials using electrokinetic forces through the channels of a microfluidic system. The subject materials are transported in regions of high ionic concentration, next to spacer material regions of high ionic concentration, which are separated by spacer material regions of low ionic concentration. Such arrangements allow the materials to remain localized for the transport transit time to avoid mixing of the materials. Using these techniques, an electropipettor which is compatible with the microfluidic system is created so that materials can be easily introduced into the microfluidic system. The present invention also compensates for electrophoretic bias as materials are transported through the channels of the microfluidic system by splitting a channel into portions with positive and negative surface charges and a third electrode between the two portions, or by diffusion of the electrophoresing materials after transport along a channel.
