Publication number: 20140200685Abstract: A system, a method and an apparatus are described. The apparatus includes a modem that responds to a thermal mitigation request by invoking different levels of thermal mitigation for different concurrently active connections. In some instances, the modem may invoke thermal mitigation with respect to a first active connection and refrain from invoking thermal mitigation with respect to a second active connection maintained by the modem. The apparatus determines the first and second active connections based on subscriptions corresponding to subscriber identification modules, an identification of a power amplifier or group of power amplifiers responsible for a thermal issue in the modem. The selection of mitigation levels for each active connection and decisions to invoke mitigation on one connection while refraining from invoking mitigation on another connection may be based on priorities of the active connections, including quality of service related priorities.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 17, 2013Publication date: July 17, 2014Inventors: Francis M. Patent number: 8700055Abstract: When a user equipment engaged in mobile communications transfers from a network with one radio access technology (RAT) to another network with a different radio access technology, maintaining continuity of location based services can improve system performance. A user equipment may perform a series of checks when undergoing inter-RAT transfer to determine if a location based services protocol used with the source network is operable on the target network. The UE also determines if location based services sessions are at a point where they can be continued following inter-RAT transfer. Where possible, protocols and sessions are maintained to preserve location based services continuity.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2011Date of Patent: April 15, 2014Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Kuo-Chun Lee, Srinivasan Balasubramanian, Kirk A. Patent number: 8532664Abstract: Reverse link reception and reverse link capacity are improved at a multi-sector radio base station (RBS) by forcing always-softer reverse link handoff conditions for mobile stations served by the RBS. Whenever a serving sector reverse link is assigned to a mobile station at the RBS, one or more additional reverse links are assigned to it from remaining sectors of the RBS. Such assignments are made irrespective of whether those sectors are, or could be, used to serve the mobile station on the forward link. The RBS improves its reception of the mobile station's reverse link transmissions by combining signals from all of the assigned reverse links. With improved reception, mobile stations can be commanded or configured to reduce their reverse link transmit power, thereby reducing reverse link interference and increasing reverse link capacity.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2003Date of Patent: September 10, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Wanshi Chen, Reza Shahidi

Patent number: 8516101Abstract: Techniques for managing resources on a wireless device are described. In an aspect, congestion of resources on the wireless device may be detected. If any resources are deemed to be congested, then congestion of the congested resources may be relieved by controlling utilization of the congested resources by at least one client. In one design, flow control may be performed for at least one data flow to relieve congestion of the congested resources. A pattern indicative of when to send messages enabling data transmission and when to send messages disabling data transmission may be selected. Messages may then be sent in accordance with the pattern to control transmission of data for the at least one data flow. Another pattern with a higher ON fraction or a lower ON fraction may be selected based on usage of the congested resources.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 2010Date of Patent: August 20, 2013Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Srinivasan Balasubramanian, Ajith T. Patent number: 8514703Abstract: Techniques for scheduling logical channels for data transmission are described. In one design, a user equipment (UE) is configured with a plurality of logical channels for sending data on the uplink. Each logical channel is associated with a priority and a data buffer size. The UE maintains a token bucket for each logical channel. In each scheduling interval or when an uplink grant is received, the UE determines a bucket level (which may be a positive value or a non-positive value) for each of the plurality of logical channels. The UE ascertains logical channels with bucket levels of the same polarity and then identifies logical channels of the same priority among all logical channels with the same bucket level polarity. The UE selects at least one identified logical channel for scheduling based on the data buffer size and/or the bucket level for each identified logical channel.Type: GrantFiled: November 11, 2010Date of Patent: August 20, 2013Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Kuo-Chun Lee, Walid Mostafa Harndy, Reza Shahidi, Srinivasan Balasubramanian

Patent number: 8503430Abstract: An operational mode of a terminal is dynamically configured to allow the terminal to receive services of interest to the terminal while potentially conserving battery power. The terminal operates in a first mode (e.g., an HRPD-only mode) and monitors only a first radio network (e.g., an HRPD network) for pages from a first data network (e.g., and IMS network) if all services from a second data network (e.g., an ANSI-41 network) of interest to the terminal is obtainable via the first radio network. The terminal operates in a second mode (e.g., an 1X-HRPD mode) and monitors the first radio network and a second radio network (e.g., a 1X network) for pages from the first and second data networks, respectively, if at least one service from the second data network of interest to the terminal is not obtainable via the first radio network. The terminal may dynamically select the first or second mode.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2006Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Reza Shahidi, Deepak Khandelwal

Patent number: 8385350Abstract: Techniques to detect for end of service using dynamic inactivity timer thresholds are described. An access terminal establishes a radio connection for one or more applications. Data and signaling for the application(s) may be sent on one or more first flows (e.g., RLP flows) that may carry any number of second flows (e.g., IP flows). The access terminal determines a dynamic inactivity timer threshold for each first flow, e.g., based on at least one inactivity timer threshold for at least one second flow mapped to that first flow. The access terminal determines whether each first flow is inactive based on the inactivity timer threshold for that first flow, e.g., declares each first flow to be inactive if no activity is detected on that first flow for a period exceeding the inactivity timer threshold. The access terminal closes the radio connection when all first flow(s) are determined to be inactive.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2007Date of Patent: February 26, 2013Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Reza Shahidi, Ajith T. Publication number: 20120075992Abstract: Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to a technique for touch temperature management of a wireless communications device based on power dissipated over time, and possibly internal temperature readings. For example, the information about power dissipated over time can be utilized along with monitored internal temperatures of a device's internal circuitry to reduce transmit power and/or data rates as required in order to keep a surface temperature of the wireless device below a specified limit. A knowledge of how the device's touch temperature varies with the dissipated power and a knowledge of the power dissipation history can be utilized to determine when to reduce the transmit power in order to avoid overheating (e.g., exceeding the touch temperature limit).Type: ApplicationFiled: September 21, 2011Publication date: March 29, 2012Applicant: QUALCOMM, INCORPORATEDInventors: Reza Shahidi, Jon J.
