  • Publication number: 20090150536
Abstract: A method of managing congestion within a request-response system is disclosed. The method includes determining a response time that is directly or indirectly indicative of how long it takes a back end system to process a request received from a front end system and return a corresponding response. The response time is compared to a threshold criterion. A determination is made, based at least in part on the comparison, that the back end system is becoming congested with requests from the front end system. The front end system is adjusted so as to at least temporarily reduce the number of requests provided to the back end system by the front end system.

  • Publication number: 20090126819
Abstract: A cladding assembly for an elongate flexible member such as an underwater riser has a series of tubular buoyant sleeve members arranged end-to-end along the riser. The two ends of each buoyant member are formed into a part-spherical shape and are each received in a complementarily-shaped part-spherical socket in a securing collar. The buoyant sleeves are pivotable with respect to the securing collars, which allows the cladding assembly as a whole to flex with the riser.

  • Patent number: 7515416
Abstract: This invention provides a structure for holding cards having electronic and/or micromachined components. A chassis comprises a plurality of bays for receiving cards such that the cards are oriented parallel to one another. Each bay comprises a fin front-plate fabricated from thermally-conductive material(s). Each fin front-plate is coupled to or integrally formed with a base in a manner which permits thermal conductivity therebetween. For each bay holding a card, a backplane comprises an electrical connector for coupling to the card. When held in their respective bays, cards are thermally coupled to the fin front-plates. The base of the chassis preferably comprises an ingress port, an egress port and a network of conduits for conducting fluid which cools and/or redistributes heat created by the cards and their components. The network of conduits may extend from the base and into the fin front-plates.

  • Publication number: 20090051001
Abstract: A method for manufacturing an isolated vertical power device includes forming, in a back surface of a first conductivity type substrate, back isolation wall trenches that surround a conduction region of the device. In a front surface of the substrate, front isolation wall trenches are formed around the conduction region. Thereafter, a film containing a second type dopant is deposited in the front and back isolation wall trenches. In the conduction region on the back surface, conduction region trenches are formed inside the perimeter of the isolation wall trenches. A first type dopant is deposited in the conduction region trenches. The dopants are diffused from the conduction region trenches and isolation wall trenches to form a first conductivity type conduction region structure and a second conductivity type isolation wall.

  • Publication number: 20080039383
Abstract: The present invention provides methods for preventing the accumulation of cholesterol/triglycerides within mammalian cells. The present methods are based upon the surprising discovery that ER stress in a cell leads to cholesterol/triglyceride accumulation within the cell, which cholesterol/triglyceride accumulation is often a causative factor in the development of any of a number of conditions or diseases, such as atherosclerosis. The ER stress can be the result of any of a variety of causes, including homocysteine, viral infection, and hypoxia. Accordingly, counteracting the progression or the severity of ER stress can be used to inhibit the accumulation of cholesterol/triglycerides in said cell, thereby preventing or lessening the severity of any of a number of cholesterol-related diseases or conditions, e.g., atherosclerosis. In addition, the presence of ER stress in a cell can be used to diagnose a cholesterol associated disease, or to predict the propensity of a mammal to develop a disease.

  • Patent number: 6874421
Abstract: A method is provided for imparting images created with an inkjet printer to substrates. In accordance with the method, an image is imparted to an image receiving layer releasably disposed on a carrier sheet. An article can be provided, which is equipped with an adhesive patch on its surface. • Publication number: 20020178940
Abstract: A method is provided for imparting images created with an inkjet printer to foil balloons and other substrates which do not lend themselves well to direct printing. In accordance with the method, an image is imparted to an image receiving layer releasably disposed on a carrier sheet. A foil balloon or other object is provided, which is equipped with an adhesive patch on its surface. The image receiving layer is then brought into contact with the adhesive patch and the carrier sheet is removed, thereby imparting an image to the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6306076
Abstract: A device for treating human beings or animals, e.g. horses, may be attached to a strap and has a first disc-shaped magnet (1) rotatably mounted on pins (6) within a second annular magnet (3), and held in place by a plate (8). The upper surface of the second magnet (3) is a south pole and the lower surface is a north pole. The first magnet can be rotated through 180 degrees so that its top surface can be chosen to be a north or south pole. The whole device can be removed from its strap and inverted so that different poles can be adjacent the skin in use. A uniform magnetic field of either polarity, or an alternating field can thus be applied to the wearer.

  • Patent number: 6225662
Abstract: A semiconductor structure with a heavily doped buried breakdown region and a method for manufacture. A source region is disposed in a substrate and is doped with dopant of a type opposite that of the substrate. A drain region is disposed in the substrate at the surface and doped with dopant which is the same as that of the source region, and a gate structure is disposed on the substrate between the source and drain regions. A breakdown region is disposed in the substrate below the drain region and is heavily doped with dopant of a type opposite that of the drain region in order to control the value and location of breakdown.

  • Patent number: 5868526
Abstract: A trench shield or manhole shield which has tapered side shields. The walls of each side shield are tapered. The outer walls are tapered inwardly from front to rear (in the case of the trench shield) or from top to bottom (in the case of a manhole shield). This taper allows the shield to be pulled out of an excavated hole by reducing friction because the trailing portion of the shield is tapered inwardly and does not contact the sides of the hole. The inner wall of each side shield of the trench shield is tapered outwardly from front to rear, further reducing friction. In different embodiments either the outer or the inner walls or both are tapered.
