  • Patent number: 6801994
Abstract: Methods and systems for operating automotive computing devices are described. In one embodiment, a small amount of static RAM (SRAM) is incorporated into an automotive computing device and is battery-backed to provide a non-volatile memory space in which critical data, e.g. the object store, can be maintained in the event of a power loss. Circuitry is provided to ensure that the SRAM receives back up power from the battery at appropriate times. Software manages the SRAM and the other storage assembly components and makes use of virtual paging or virtual addressing techniques to keep track of where various pages, including object store pages, are stored in the system.

  • Publication number: 20040174961
Abstract: A system and method for imputing data into a database includes an imputing system operable to impute data based on outside plant construction principles. The imputing system includes an inventory database, a data engine, a search engine, and a loop engine. The inventory database includes a plurality of distribution records each associated with one or more cable pairs. The data engine determines if a desired distribution record corresponding to a desired cable pair includes missing data. The search engine searches a known class of serving terminals for complete distribution records and iteratively searches a sized binder group within the inventory database for one or more complete distribution records where the size of the binder group searched increases with each iterative search. The loop engine determines an imputed value for the desired distribution record based on the searching and imputes the value into the desired distribution record.

  • Patent number: 6438379
Abstract: Multiple microcell base stations are located within a macrocell having single macrocell base station in an hierarchical architecture, and microcell users (&mgr;-users) and macrocell users (M-users) communicate respectively with the &mgr;-base and the M-base using the same frequency band, by appropriately (a) selecting the ratio of the radius r of each &mgr; cell and the average distance d from the M-base (r and d are measured by the “radio distance”, which includes the effects of shadowing), and (b) controlling the power level with which uplink (mobile to base) and downlink (base to mobile) messages are communicated. Typically, &mgr;-cell size and location are chosen such that d/r>10. With respect to uplink communications, the transmit powers of the &mgr;-users in a &mgr;-cell are controlled so that the total received power at the nearest M-base is equivalent to the received power from C M-users, where C is usually set to unity.

  • Patent number: 6381567
Abstract: A method and system for personalizing standard data-processing applications for utilization by diverse data-processing application users. Initially, data which includes a group of human language files, is stored within a source directory within a data-processing system. Next, the presence of the group of human language files is automatically detected within the source directory in response to loading general system data into a working directory wherein at least one human language file among the group of human language files corresponds to a preset human language setting for the data-processing system. Thereafter, the human language file which corresponds to the preset human language setting is loaded into the working directory from the source directory. Next, the general system data is configured with the human language file which corresponds to the preset human language setting such that the general system data is now personalized to the human language of the user of the data-processing system.

  • Patent number: 6347320
Abstract: A method of searching for files located in a computer system, wherein each file has at least one of a plurality of fields, by creating a search query, selecting a subset of the fields for searching wherein the subset is selected independent of the search query, and processing the files by examining the content of only those fields included in the subset for matching against the query. The fields can be selected by using a default setting. Certain fields are ignored during the processing step. An illustrative embodiment is adapted for use with hypertext markup language (HTML) files that are transmitted along the Internet's World Wide Web. The user interface may include a pop-up window that displays a list of the tags which may be embedded in the files, and allows a user to individually select one or more tags so displayed for searching.

  • Patent number: 6198941
Abstract: A method of effectuating a change in the operation of a portable communication device such as a laptop or palmtop computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), or a cellular telephone. The device can communicate with a remote host or server using one of two or more different communication arrangements. Various signals indicative of the environment in which the device is operating are monitored, to anticipate or predict a change or transition from one communication arrangement to the other. If the change is determined to be both imminent and significant, the operation change is effected substantially simultaneously, by changing parameters in the transport and/or application protocol layer in the device.
