  • Patent number: 7606145
Abstract: A dual-mode broadband modem operative to operate in a service mode and a surveillance mode is disclosed. Generally, the dual-mode broadband modem comprises a primary communication device; a secondary communication device; a central processing unit in communication with the primary and secondary communication devices; and a memory unit in communication with the central processing unit. In the service mode, the primary communication device communicates with a broadband service provider and the central processing unit stores historical information regarding performance of the primary communication device in the memory unit. If an interruption in broadband service is detected, or the performance of the primary communication device falls below a predetermined threshold, the dual-mode broadband modem switches to surveillance mode and the secondary communication device is activated.

  • Patent number: 7529055
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for writing reference patterns on a data storage disk of a disk drive. The disk is rotated by a spindle motor. A back EMF sense circuit generates a sequence of zero crossing signals from back EMF sensed on windings of the spindle motor over each revolution of the spindle motor. The sequence of zero crossing signals define a corresponding sequence of zero crossing periods of time between successive zero crossing signals. A Phase Locked Loop (PLL) circuit generates a timing signal in response to comparison of a feedback signal to the zero crossing signals. The PLL circuit also compensates for repeatable variation among the sequence of zero crossing periods over each revolution of the spindle motor so that the timing signal is substantially independent of the repeatable variation among the sequence of zero crossing periods. A recording pattern generator writes reference patterns on the disk in response to the timing signal as the disk is rotated by the spindle motor.

  • Publication number: 20080237148
Abstract: The control systems and technique can regulate or control operations of a water treatment system in a primary control mode and, when appropriate, in a secondary or an alternate control mode. The primary control can represent a normal control mode during which the water treatment system is intended to operate. The alternate control mode can represent a second control or mode of operation. The systems can be operated to control or facilitate regulation, monitoring, and performance of one or more operating parameters of one or more water systems between, or to and from, a first mode, a second or alternate mode, and, in some cases, a third or even a fourth control mode. The change in control mode can be triggered by identifying one or more predetermined, pre-selected, and/or programmed conditions.

Abstract: A preload system for bearings in a waterjet propulsion apparatus, the apparatus including a water intake section and a pumping unit including a bearing cartridge. The bearing cartridge is designed such that during operation a preload system provides tailoring between radial and axial thermal growths of a plurality of bearing components that comprise the bearing cartridge and such that an initial ambient temperature preload condition can be maintained or reduced during normal water mode operation conditions. The preload system includes a plurality of spacers that when positioned relative to the bearing components of the bearing cartridge prevent relative motion between the bearing components during land mode operation and maintain or reduce the initial ambient room temperature preload condition during normal water mode operation.
