  • Publication number: 20070234077
Abstract: Power consumption may be reduced by imbalancing the loads handled by interchangeable components. Interchangeable components, such as memory devices, processors, servers, or other entities, may be imbalanced to reduce power consumption as circumstances allow. As a result, interchangeable components that are used to implement effectively the same function may be powered down or hot-removed and their duties transferred to other components. As a result, the deactivated component may be powered down to a reduced power consumption state, thereby reducing the overall power consumption of the system.

  • Publication number: 20070005744
Abstract: A peer-to-peer IT (Information Technology) backbone. The system includes at least one IT server and a plurality of client computers arranged in a peer-to-peer IT backbone. Each of the client computers includes an in-band processor, an out-of-band (OOB) microcontroller, and a storage device coupled to the in-band processor and OOB microcontroller. The storage device includes a reserved area for the OOB microcontroller to enable an IT-administration to push IT payloads from the at least one IT server onto the reserved area of at least one of the plurality of client computers. The IT payloads are disseminated throughout the peer-to-peer IT backbone by the OOB microcontroller of the client computers.

  • Publication number: 20060294353
Abstract: A method and apparatus is described herein for fault resilient booting of a platform. Upon booting the platform, any boot routines marked are skipped. A current boot routine to be executed in a boot sequence is registered in nonvolatile memory. An attempt to execute the current boot routine is made. If the attempt is successful, the next boot entry is determined and skipped or executed, based on whether it is marked. However, if the execution fails the current boot routine is marked and, upon subsequent execution of the boot sequence, skipped.

  • Publication number: 20060288197
Abstract: Various characteristics of a hard drive may be analyzed in order to determine the nature of an operating system stored thereon. For example, an operating system indicator and/or a boot record may be identified which may enable operating system identification. Alternatively, checksums may be used to disambiguate the stored operating system. Other disk characteristics may be utilized to enable a determination of operating system and operating system version. This information may be provided to the user in a graphical user interface indicating the correspondence between operating systems and drives, or a desired operating system, once identified, may be automatically used without analyzing all drives.

  • Publication number: 20060242399
Abstract: Methods and apparatus to facilitate fast restarts in processor systems are disclosed. An example processor restart method disclosed herein includes recording a log of pre-boot initialization actions, and replaying a portion of the log during subsequent processor restarts to shorten pre-boot initialization time. The example processor restart method disclosed herein may further include creating a log index table for easier referral to portions of the log, storing the log and the log index table in non-volatile memory, using the log index table to reorder the replaying of the log, and reordering the replay of the log to initialize the video graphics adapter earlier in a processor restart sequence.

  • Publication number: 20060143602
Abstract: A system and method to implement a resilient compute center. A plurality of processing systems is initialized. Each of the processing systems capable of operation communicates status information about its operational health to a management module responsible for managing the processing systems. The management module reinitializing any of the processing systems, if the management module determines that any of the processing systems is operating in a degraded state based on the status information communicated to the management module.

  • Publication number: 20060136713
Abstract: A system and method are described for performing security operations for a cluster of servers. In one embodiment, a global secret is generated which is used to perform security operations for the cluster of servers. A plurality, n, shadows are generated based on the global secret. A subset of the plurality of shadows, m, may be used to recreate the global secret. The plurality of shadows are then distributed and stored across the plurality of servers.

  • Patent number: 5623541
Abstract: An Operations Support System, comprised of a computer and workstation, stores digit analysis specifications for telecommunications call processing. A graphical user interface displays digit analysis specifications visually as subtrees made up of nodes representing the digits of the dialed number. Two subtrees can be displayed contemporaneously for evaluation and manipulation independently and from one to another. Operations performed on the nodes also operate on the embedded digit analysis specifications permitting manipulation of the specifications without the need to view or deal with the specifications themselves directly. Related information such as Routing Table Indexes and local exchange numbers called NXX numbers are displayed contemporaneous with display of a subtree of interest and are manipulated with regard to that subtree.

  • Patent number: 5440626
Abstract: An end office of the PSTN, which employs independent switching networks which share one or more office codes, is served by a single assigned node on the CCS network. The signaling processor which serves the assigned node, screens all incoming call messages (IAM)'s; directs messages which include an appropriate Channel Identification Code (CIC) to the switching network that serves that CIC; rejects messages that include an improper CIC; and requests that the calling office assign a different CIC to the incoming call. In an alternate configuration, a signaling message intercept unit is interposed between a signal transfer point (STP) and end switches, to determine which of two or more switches should receive a message, based on the directory number, a circuit identifier or a message index of the received message, and forwards the message to the correct switch.
