  • Publication number: 20150322978
Abstract: A water submerged device for generating a force under water. The device includes an enclosure having a piston that drives a ram, the piston dividing the enclosure into closing and opening chambers, the opening chamber connected to the low pressure recipient, and containing a first fluid. The device further includes a low pressure recipient for containing a first fluid having a lower pressure than the first fluid, and in selective fluid communication with the opening chamber of the enclosure via a first valve. In addition, the device includes a control module connected to the enclosure and in selective communication with the opening chamber of the enclosure via a second valve. The first and second valves are controlled so that only one of the low pressure recipient or the control module is in fluid communication with the opening chamber of the enclosure at a time.

  • Patent number: 9120218
Abstract: A standup paddle board grip handle mounted flush on the board for quickly and easily carrying the board. The absence of moving parts on the handle prevents it from malfunctioning due to clogging by sand, salt, or other debris and helps to keep the handle clean and functional at all times. The molded rubber grip surface provides comfort when gripping the handle to carry the board and prevents it from slipping from the hand even when it is wet. The ergonomic design of the grip handle makes it possible for it to be integrated into other boards including even hollow construction water craft using any surface mounted application where the extended flange on the top part of the grip handle sits on top of the surface skin of the craft. The voids on the grip handle allow for the passage of a lock cable to secure the board.

  • Patent number: 9033048
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods useable in drilling installations having a mud loop for detecting ongoing or imminent kick events are provided. An apparatus includes a first sensor configured to measure a input mud flow pumped into the well, and a second sensor configured to measure a variation of a return mud flow emerging from the well. The apparatus further includes a controller connected to the first sensor, and to the second sensor. The controller is configured to identify an ongoing or imminent kick event based on monitoring and comparing an evolution of the input mud flow as measured by the first sensor and an evolution of the return mud flow as inferred based on measurements received from the second sensor. Additionally, a third sensor can be included in the apparatus to confirm the conclusion made by the controller before alerting the user that a kick has likely occurred.

  • Publication number: 20140297415
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to flexible, user-adapted, continuous searching, on behalf of a particular user, for points of interest relevant to the user's current location within a specifically computed personal region of interest. In a general case, the personal region of interest is computed as a function of the user's level of disposition towards the searched-for points of interest. The level of disposition towards the searched-for points of interest may, in turn, be based on two or more of the user's location, the current date and time, a history of the user's interaction with the POI-searching system, including user-initiated searches and user selections from displayed search results, a user profile developed for, and continuously updated on behalf of, the user, and a current context for the search, as specified by a search query or by other context-specifying means.

  • Publication number: 20140174133
Abstract: Methods for forming optical fiber preforms are disclosed. According to one embodiment, a method for forming an optical fiber preform includes forming a preform core portion from silica-based glass soot. The silica-based glass soot may include at least one dopant species for altering an index of refraction of the preform core portion. A selective diffusion layer of silica-based glass soot may be formed around the preform core portion to form a soot preform. The selective diffusion layer may have an as-formed density greater than the density of the preform core portion. A diffusing species may be diffused through the selective diffusion layer into the preform core portion. The soot preform may be sintered such that the selective diffusion layer has a barrier density which is greater than the as-formed density and the selective diffusion layer prevents diffusion of the at least one dopant species through the selective diffusion layer.

  • Publication number: 20140166264
Abstract: Blowout preventer systems are provided. According to an exemplary embodiment, the system includes a blowout preventer, a plurality of position sensing mechanisms, a plurality of pressure sensing mechanisms, and a controller configured to receive position data indicating a position of a piston and pressure data indicating the pressure of hydraulic fluid being applied to the piston, and to determine a current stroking pressure signature or fingerprint during a closing cycle, which when compared to a baseline stroking pressure signature or fingerprint, can provide an indication of the health of one or more components of the operator containing the piston. The controller can also determine a backlash of the ram block, and/or to record a position of the ram block, and/or to calculate an instant when a supplemental closing pressure is desired to be applied, and/or to determine when maintenance of a ram locking mechanism is due, and/or to determine when sealing elements are worn.
