  • Patent number: 4986990
Abstract: There is disclosed, in one aspect, chlorous acid generating compositions useful for disinfecting substrates. The compositions comprise aqueous solutions containing a suitable amount of a protic acid, such as citric or malic acid, and a suitable amount of a metal chlorite, such as sodium chlorite. The chlorite ion concentration which is in the form of chlorous acid in the composition is no more than about 15 percent by weight of the total amount of chlorite ion concentration. In a preferred embodiment, the composition also contains a vicinal dihydroxy or polyhydroxy compound. In another preferred embodiment, the composition contains at least a 10-fold molar excess of a water soluble chloride ion compared to the total concentration of chlorite ion. In another aspect, there is disclosed a process for disinfecting substrates. This process comprises applying the compositions described above to a substrate. In yet another aspect, there is disclosed a process for preparing the compositions described above.

  • Patent number: 4956184
Abstract: There is disclosed a method for treating dermatologic diseases caused by microbial overgrowth or inflammation, such as psoriasis, fungal infections, eczema, dandruff, acne, genital herpes lesions, and leg ulcers. There is further disclosed an antiviral lubricating composition that is effective in preventing the transmission of the HIV virus and other sexually transmitted diseases. There is also disclosed systemic anti-inflammatory compositions and formulations and a method for reducing tissue inflammation in tissues such as the bowel, muscle, bone, tendon and joints (e.g. arthritis).

  • Patent number: 4891216
Abstract: There is disclosed, in one aspect, a composition for forming a protective barrier while disinfecting substrates such as human or animal skin. The composition comprises two gels adapted to be simultaneously applied and mixed in situ and to adhere onto the substrate. The first gel comprises an aqueous solution containing suitable amounts of a protic acid, preferably lactic acid. The second gel comprises an amount of a metal chlorite such as sodium chlorite, such that the chlorite ion concentration in the form of chlorous acid in the combined gels is no more than about 15% by weight of the total amount of chlorite ion concentration. The second gel also contains a polysulfonic acid salt. The anion of that salt has the formula: ##STR1## wherein X has a value such that the molecular weight of the anionic portion of the polymer is from about 1,000,000 to about 5,000,000. In another aspect, there is disclosed a method for treating skin diseases.

  • Patent number: 4649046
Abstract: An improved polymeric material containing volatilizable active ingredients such as air fresheners, odorants, insecticides and the like, which is clear and can be molded into various transparent tinted or untinted decorative objects, and which can also (if desired) be made flexible and tacky on the surfaces to permit its being readily and inconspicuously adhered to any convenient surface, and which gradually releases the active ingredient into the surrounding atmosphere. The polymeric materials of the invention comprise polymerized hydroxy alkyl esters of vinylically unsaturated carboxylic acids, one or more volatilizable active ingredients, and a solubilizing agent having an appropriate balance of hydrophilic and lipophilic functions selected to substantially dissolve the active ingredient.

  • Patent number: 3980084
Abstract: An improved ostomy sealing gasket for application to the opening between the intestinal or urethral stoma of the patient and a post-surgical external pouch. The sealing gasket is made from a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate with an alkylene glycol or polyalkylene glycol in the presence of a reducing agent and water. Embodiments designed for higher absorptive capacity also include an absorptive material such as natural or synthetic gums or a cellulosic material.
