  • Publication number: 20150065794
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved cannula that enables a plurality of applications to such as tools to be utilised through a single cannula. According to the present invention there is a cannula having a distal end for insertion into a body, the distal end defining an opening to a primary conduit extending along the longitudinal axis of the cannula. The cannula further comprises a tool element for providing a tool function at or adjacent the distal end of the cannula. At least a portion of the tool element is arranged to be moveable outwardly relative to the longitudinal axis of the cannula. Accordingly, it is beneficial that more than one function can be provided at the distal end of the cannula reducing the trauma to the patient and improving access for the surgeon.

  • Publication number: 20150039707
Abstract: The disclosure concerns systems and methods for extracting data from documents. A computer receives a message from a sender. The message has the electronic document and an electronic address of the sender. Based on the address of the sender the computer selects a map that comprises location data of data fields and determines values of the data fields by extracting data from the electronic document using the location data of the selected map. Since the computer selects the map based on the address of the sender the computer does not need to rely on the content of the electronic document to select the correct map to use, which makes the selection less prone to errors and the method can be used with existing email systems.

  • Publication number: 20150004172
Abstract: We found that FIZZ1/RELM? is inducible by hypoxia in lung. The hypoxia-upregulated expression of FIZZ1/RELM? was located in the pulmonary vasculature, bronchial epithelial cells, and type II pneumocytes. Recombinant FIZZ1/RELM? protein stimulates rat pulmonary microvascular smooth muscle cell (RPSM) proliferation dose-dependently. Therefore, we renamed this gene as hypoxia-induced mitogenic factor (HIMF). HIMF strongly activated Akt phosphorylation. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor LY294002 inhibits HIMF-activated Akt phosphorylation. It also inhibits HIMF-stimulated RPSM proliferation. Thus, the PI3K/Akt pathway, at least in part, mediates the proliferative effect of HIMF. HIMF also has angiogenic and vasoconstrictive activity. Notably, HIMF increases pulmonary arterial pressure and vascular resistance more potently than either endothelin-1 or angiotensin II.

  • Patent number: 8903121
Abstract: A rain detection apparatus includes a camera that views a surface and a processor that captures an image from the camera. The processor generates a signal indicative of rain on the surface from information contained in the captured image and optionally drives a surface cleaning apparatus in response thereto. The apparatus captures images focused at a plurality of distances. The processor includes an edge detector that detects edges visible in the captured image and a difference structure that calculates the difference between the number of edges visible between differing images. The edge detector disregards edges close to areas of light larger than the largest raindrop that is desired or expected to be detected. The apparatus optionally includes a backlight, and the difference in numbers of edges between frames with and without the backlight illuminated are used to distinguish between background features and rain on the surface.

  • Patent number: 8898787
Abstract: This paper describes a mechanism for minimizing the exploitation of vulnerabilities on software installed on a computing system. At a transport layer (e.g., transmission communication protocol (TCP) sockets layer), network traffic is monitored using a security component installed on a target computer. When a message destined for the computing system is received, data included in the message is compared with exploit evidence used to identify malicious code. The exploit evidence is provided to the security component by security service that gathers information about the malicious code. Based on the comparison of data in the message with the exploit evidence, rules are identified that instruct the security component to take an appropriate action on the message received.

  • Publication number: 20140290896
Abstract: A system and method for directionally casting an elongated device are provided. The method includes orienting a mold within a furnace such that a first portion of the mold points downward. The first portion of the mold defines a space within the mold used to form a first end of the device. The first end of the device, when formed, has a greater mass than a second end of the device. The method also includes filling the mold with molten metal and lowering the mold out of the furnace into a liquid metal bath to immerse the first portion of the mold in the liquid metal bath. The method includes concurrently lowering the mold and the liquid metal bath to cool the molten metal.
