  • Publication number: 20130032306
Abstract: A system and method for directionally casting an elongated device are provided. The method includes orienting a mold within a furnace such that a first portion of the mold points downward. The first portion of the mold defines a space within the mold used to form a first end of the device. The first end of the device, when formed, has a greater mass than a second end of the device. The method also includes filling the mold with molten metal and lowering the mold out of the furnace into a liquid metal bath to immerse the first portion of the mold in the liquid metal bath. The method includes concurrently lowering the mold and the liquid metal bath to cool the molten metal.

  • Patent number: 8343491
Abstract: Hypoxia induced mitogenic factor (HIMF) is a member of the “found in inflammatory zone” (FIZZ)/resistin family of proteins and has potent mitogenic, angiogenic, and vasoconstrictive effects in the lung vasculature. We use antibodies to HIMF to treat certain diseases including adult respiratory distress syndrome, radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and emphysema.

  • Patent number: 8345152
Abstract: A CCD sensor has a shutter to prevent frame shift smear during transfer of an image from the image region to a store region. The CCD sensor has an extended dynamic range, because each integration is in two parts, the second part of which has a different sensitivity than the first part. In order to avoid an asymmetry in the uncovering and covering of the image region, a two-bladed shutter is used.

  • Publication number: 20120329723
Abstract: Cell-permeant fusion peptides Tat-PDZ can dose-dependently reduce the threshold for anesthesia. PDZ domain-mediated protein interactions at synapses in the central nervous system play an important role in the molecular mechanisms of anesthesia. Moreover, Tat-PDZ cell-permeant fusion peptides are delivered intracellularly into neurons in the central nervous system subsequent to intraperitoneally injection. By in vitro and in vivo binding assays, we found that the Tat-PDZ dose-dependently inhibited the interactions between NMDARs and PSD-95. Furthermore, behavior testing showed that animals given Tat-PDZ exhibited significantly reduced established inflammatory pain behaviors compared to vehicle-treated group. Our results indicate that by disrupting NMDAR/PSD-95 protein interactions, the Tat-PDZ cell-permeable fusion peptides provide a new approach for inflammatory pain therapy.

  • Patent number: 8329177
Abstract: We found that FIZZ1/RELM? is inducible by hypoxia in lung. The hypoxia-upregulated expression of FIZZ1/RELM? was located in the pulmonary vasculature, bronchial epithelial cells, and type II pneumocytes. Recombinant FIZZ1/RELM? protein stimulates rat pulmonary microvascular smooth muscle cell (RPSM) proliferation dose-dependently. Therefore, we renamed this gene as hypoxia-induced mitogenic factor (HIMF). HIMF strongly activated Akt phosphorylation. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor LY294002 inhibits HIMF-activated Akt phosphorylation. It also inhibits HIMF-stimulated RPSM proliferation. Thus, the PI3K/Akt pathway, at least in part, mediates the proliferative effect of HIMF. HIMF also has angiogenic and vasoconstrictive activity. Notably, HIMF increases pulmonary arterial pressure and vascular resistance more potently than either endothelin-1 or angiotensin II.

  • Patent number: 8314874
Abstract: A CCD such as a frame transfer CCD has an extended dynamic range. The image built up in the image region 1 in each integration period is transferred to the store region 2 in each frame transfer period, for example, at a TV signal rate. The dynamic range is increased by dividing the integration period into two parts, and clipping the signal in the first part, but not in the second. The signal is clipped by pulsing the clock electrodes of the image region so as to combine the charges from adjacent wells together, overspill being drained into the anti-blooming structure, consequently reducing well capacity.

  • Publication number: 20120182424
Abstract: A rain detection apparatus includes a camera that views a surface and a processor that captures an image from the camera. The processor generates a signal indicative of rain on the surface from information contained in the captured image and optionally drives a surface cleaning apparatus in response thereto. The apparatus captures images focused at a plurality of distances. The processor includes an edge detector that detects edges visible in the captured image and a difference structure that calculates the difference between the number of edges visible between differing images. The edge detector disregards edges close to areas of light larger than the largest raindrop that is desired or expected to be detected. The apparatus optionally includes a backlight, and the difference in numbers of edges between frames with and without the backlight illuminated are used to distinguish between background features and rain on the surface.

  • Patent number: 8210240
Abstract: A casting process and apparatus for producing directionally-solidified castings, and castings produced therewith. The process entails applying a facecoat slurry to a surface within a mold cavity to form a continuous solid facecoat on the surface, introducing a molten metal alloy into the mold cavity so that the molten metal alloy contacts the facecoat, and then immersing the mold in a liquid coolant to cool and solidify the molten metal alloy and form a casting of the metal alloy, during which an oxide layer forms on the casting surface. The facecoat is sufficiently adherent to the oxide layer such that at least a portion of the facecoat detaches from the mold surface and remains tightly adhered to the casting surface in the event the casting contracts during cooling. The facecoat contains at least 60 weight percent of a first phase of yttria, and the balance of the facecoat is a binder phase of an inorganic material.
