  • Patent number: 10008229
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system are provided for implementing track following using signal asymmetry metrics monitored during read back in hard disk drives (HDDs). Signal asymmetry metrics monitored during read back are used together with a position error signal (PES) to correct and guide the position of a read sensor with respect to a written track in the HDD.

  • Publication number: 20180095464
Abstract: An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is disclosed that may allow for supervisory control interaction by a remote operator to assist with navigation to a target location. The UAV may navigate to a target area and capture and send an image of the target area to the remote operator. The remote operator can then provide a user input that indicates a target location within the target area. Upon receiving an indication of the target area, the UAV can then autonomously navigate to the target location. In some examples, after reaching the target location, the UAV may initiate delivery of a payload at the target location using a retractable delivery system while the UAV hovers above.

  • Publication number: 20180039775
Abstract: Examples described may relate to methods and systems for controlling permission requests for applications running on a computing device to access resources provided by the computing device. A computing device may maintain in memory for a given application responses to permission requests. The computing device may receive responses to a first permission request that includes two selectable options to either allow or deny access to a particular resource. The computing device may determine whether a number of the responses to the first request that indicate to deny access exceeds a predefined threshold. If the number exceeds the threshold, the computing device may provide, at a run-time of the application subsequent to presentation of the first request, and based on the application attempting to access the resource, a modified permission request that includes, in addition to the two selectable options, a selectable option to prevent requesting permission to access the resource.

  • Publication number: 20180034484
Abstract: A method and data storage system receives a confidence vector for a non-binary symbol value read from a memory cell of a non-volatile memory device, where the confidence vector includes a first plurality of confidence values and transforms the first plurality of confidence values into a first plurality of likelihood values using a forward tensor-product transform. A respective binary message passing decoding operation is performed with each of the first plurality of likelihood values to generate a second plurality of likelihood values, and the second plurality of likelihood values are transformed into a second plurality of confidence values of the confidence vector using a reverse tensor-product transform.

  • Patent number: 9848183
Abstract: A display system is configured to display a stereoscopic three dimensional relief effect in aerial space from a two dimensional image source. The display system has a reflector, having a generalized cylindrical concave surface. The two dimensional image source is arranged between the first side and the second side facing the generalized cylindrical concave surface. The reflector reflects light from the two dimensional image source outward as an aerial image. The aerial image exhibits the stereoscopic three dimensional relief effect. A support structure is operably connected to the reflector and the two dimensional image source. The reflector and the two dimensional image source are adapted to be individually rotated and tilted relative to one another while their position is physically secured.

  • Patent number: 9829417
Abstract: An environmental conditioning assembly for use in mechanical testing at scales of microns or less. The assembly includes an enclosure housing with an environmental cavity therein. A sample stage is positioned within the environmental cavity and includes an option sample heater. The enclosure housing includes a cavity perimeter clustered around the sample stage, and the enclosure housing isolates the environmental cavity and the sample stage from an environment exterior to the enclosure housing. In an example, an expansion and contraction linkage maintains a sample on the sample stage at a static elevation according to heating or cooling fluctuations within the environmental cavity. A testing instrument access port extends through the enclosure housing into the environmental cavity.

  • Patent number: 9783295
Abstract: An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is disclosed that includes a retractable payload delivery system. The payload delivery system can lower a payload to the ground using an assembly that secures the payload during descent and releases the payload upon reaching the ground. The assembly can also include a bystander communication module for generating cues for bystander perception. While the assembly securing the payload is being lowered from the UAV, the bystander communication module can generate an avoidance cue indicating that bystanders should avoid interference with the assembly. The assembly also includes sensors that generate data used, at least in part, to determine when the descending assembly is at or near the ground, at which point the assembly releases the payload. The bystander communication module can then cease the avoidance cue and the UAV can retract the assembly.
