  • Publication number: 20130128372
Abstract: A disc drive system provides increased reliability by detecting and correcting errors associated with bit-patterned media. Write synchronization errors associated with bit-patterned media are addressed by including data storage for temporarily storing data that is being written to the disc drive. The data is read from both the disc drive and the storage medium and compared to detect write synchronization errors. A disc drive system for correcting write synchronization errors includes an encoder, non-volatile storage, and decoder device for implementing a parity-based scheme for increased reliability. Data strings being written to the disc drive are combined in an encoder to generate a parity string. The address of the data being written to the disc drive, along with the updated parity string is stored to the non-volatile storage. The data strings are read from the disc drive by the decoder.

  • Publication number: 20130075359
Abstract: Provided are a perpendicular magnetic recording head and a method of manufacturing the same. The perpendicular magnetic recording head includes a main pole including a pole tip applying a recording magnetic field to a recording medium, a coil surrounding the main pole in a solenoid shape such that recording magnetic field for recording information to a recording medium is generated at the pole tip, and a return yoke forming a magnetic path for the recording magnetic field together with the main pole and surrounding a portion of the coil passing above the main pole. The number of times that the coil passes above the main pole is smaller than the number of times that the coil passes below the main pole.

  • Publication number: 20130071062
Abstract: A plasmonic transducer includes at least two metal elements with a gap therebetween. The metal elements are placed along a plasmon-enhanced, near-field radiation delivery axis. Cross sections of the metal elements in a plane normal to the delivery axis vary in shape along the delivery axis. The metal elements have a reduced cross section portion at a media-facing surface oriented normal to the delivery axis. A dielectric material surrounds the reduced cross section portion of the plasmonic transducer at the media-facing surface, and reduces deformation of the metal elements proximate the media-facing surface at elevated temperatures.

  • Publication number: 20130058600
Abstract: Accurately formed critical tolerance fit components are provided for fluid dynamic bearing motors, including disc drive memory systems. In an aspect, critical tolerance fit components are molded to a metal insert and include a portion of a hub, a disc seating surface, and a disc locating surface. The insert includes another portion of a hub, a sleeve, or a disc clamp retainer for a novel disc clamp. In an aspect, the plastic component is situated to cause the thermal expansion of the plastic to be restricted by the thermal expansion of a metal insert. Expensive machining of a stamped metal hub is minimized or eliminated by using the molded component portions. Strict component tolerances are provided as needed for perpendicularity relative to motor rotation for seating a disc with accurate flatness, a circumferential surface for centering the disc, and tight parallelism between a disc mounting surface and a center shaft.

  • Publication number: 20130022841
Abstract: The application discloses a magnetic pole assembly having a pole tip arranged in a magnetic flux path and side shields separated from the pole tip by non-magnetic gap regions. The side shields are shaped to provide a differential shielding effect alongside the pole tip. As described, the sides shields are shaped to provide a non-magnetic gap region having a width that increases in the downtrack direction along a length of the pole tip. The increasing non-magnetic gap region alongside the pole tip provides a smaller non-magnetic gap region separating the pole tip from the side shields at the leading edge than the non-magnetic gap region separating the pole tip from the side shields at the trailing edge of the pole tip.
