  • Patent number: 7894400
Abstract: A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may include an IEEE 802.16 modem, a universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) modem and a media independent handover (MIH) entity. Software application programming interfaces provide the MIH entity with mechanisms to receive information about IEEE 802.16 and UMTS links, control IEEE 802.16 and UMTS modems for handover, discover an MIH server and IP multimedia system nodes, trigger mobile IP handover, etc. If an IEEE 802.16 link has been successfully established, the MIH entity starts an MIH session. When the IEEE 802.16 modem indicates that a connection is going to be terminated, the MIH entity activates the UMTS modem for handover. If the IEEE 802.16 modem indicates that a link parameter has crossed a threshold, the MIH entity sends IEEE 802.16 and WCDMA signal measurements to an MIH server. After receiving an MIH switch request, the MIH entity initiates handover to the UMTS network.

  • Patent number: 7869378
Abstract: A method and apparatus for communicating slot allocations of nodes in a wireless mesh network that has data exchanges between the nodes occurring during slots. Each node maintains internal tracking of its slot allocation. A node may request a slot allocation of another node, and each node is enabled to report its slot allocation to other nodes. An information element (IE) and management type messages are introduced for tracking and reporting slot allocations among mesh network nodes.

  • Patent number: 7773628
Abstract: A method and device for performing media independent handover (MIH) in a wireless communication system. The method includes, and the apparatus is configured to, generate a higher layer handover message, send the higher layer handover message encapsulated in a lower level formatted communication, set a higher layer timing device for a timeout period in connection with the sending of the encapsulated higher layer handover message, and resend the higher layer handover message encapsulated in a lower level formatted communication unless a higher layer acknowledgement is received before expiration of the timeout period.

  • Publication number: 20100008344
Abstract: In a wireless local area network including an access controller (AC) and an access points (AP), the AC transmits a functionality inquiry to the AP. Upon receiving the inquiry, the AP transmits a query response including the functional capabilities of the AP. The AC then generates a map of the functional capabilities present in the network based on the inquiry response. Conflicting or redundant functional capabilities are identified and are disabled, enabled, or reconfigured by instructions from the AC. The AC may selectively enable and/or disable functional capabilities at nodes in the network to provide a more balanced load on the network, and to provide for load sharing by allocating functionalities between and among network nodes having common functional capabilities to satisfy a variety of situations encountered in the network.

  • Publication number: 20090201879
Abstract: A radio interface layer media independent handover (RIL MIH) client functionality enables transparent inter-system handover of a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) between different radio access technologies (RATs), without user intervention. The RIL MIH client interacts with RIL drivers and proxies, informs the RIL proxies of the handover status, then the proxies interact with a new driver in use. A WTRU is modified to add MIH functionality to a telephony server to support inter-system handover.

  • Publication number: 20090161629
Abstract: A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) may include two or more modems, each configured to link to a different network, and a media independent handover (MIH) client. An application programming interfaces (API) may provide the MIH client with mechanisms to receive information about links, control the modems for handover, discover a MIH server and IP multimedia system nodes, trigger mobile IP handover, etc. If a link has been successfully established, the MIH client may start a MIH session. When the modem indicates that a connection is going to be terminated, the MIH client may activate the second modem for handover. If the first modem indicates that a link parameter has crossed a threshold, the MIH client may send signal measurements to a MIH server. After receiving a media independent handover switch request, the MIH client may initiate handover to the second network.

  • Publication number: 20080259870
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing a handover are disclosed. An Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) client registers with an IMS network and establishes an MIH session with an MIH application server using an SIP. The IMS client establishes a session for IP-based service, (e.g., VoIP), with a communication peer using SIP messaging. MIH messages are exchanged for handover with the MIH application server over IP using SIP messages by encapsulating the MIH messages in SIP instant messages. Alternatively, the MIH messages may be exchanged with the MIH application over IP by sending equivalent SIP messages in place of the MIH messages.

  • Publication number: 20080175253
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing a handover are disclosed. An Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) client registers with an IMS network and establishes a media independent handover (MIH) session with an MIH application server using a session initiation protocol (SIP). The IMS client establishes a session for IP-based service, (e.g., voice over IP (VoIP)), with a communication peer using an SIP. MIH messages are exchanged for handover with the MIH application server over IP. After handover, the session is resumed. A serving call session control function (S-CSCF) triggers the MIH application server based on a string “MIH services” and a unique identifier included in an INVITE request. The IMS client may send a REFER request to the MIH application server after the handover to resume the session. Alternatively, the IMS client may send a RE-INVITE request to the MIH application server and the communication peer.

  • Patent number: 7302251
Abstract: A wireless network includes wireless access systems for communicating with mobile stations. At least one of the wireless access systems is capable of communicating with multiple types of mobile stations. One type of mobile station communicates according to the Enhanced General Packet Radio Service (EGPRS) protocol, while another type of mobile station communicates according to the GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) protocol. • Publication number: 20070206550
Abstract: A method and apparatus for simultaneously processing data in a wireless communication system comprises a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) having a plurality of communication links. The WTRU determines desired characteristics for each communication link. Data traffic is mapped to at least one communication link based on the link characteristics, and a desired redundancy level. The processed data is then transmitted on the at least one communication link, along with the redundancy information.

  • Patent number: 7248567
Abstract: The present invention integrates resource allocation between time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD) in wireless communication systems. A radio network controller (RNC) receives a radio access bearer (RAB) request from a core network or a wireless receive/transmit unit. The RNC utilizes a TDD-FDD selector to assign radio resources in response to the request. The TDD-FDD selector evaluates various parameters regarding the received RAB request and determines whether it is preferable to assign TDD resources or FDD resources and whether such resources are currently available. Once resources are assigned, system conditions are evaluated to determine whether optimizations may be made to a current resource allocation.

  • Patent number: 7170877
Abstract: A method and system for managing radio resources in a time-slotted wireless communication system is based on the quality of service (QoS) information of a user. A plurality of time slots of a radio resource are sorted into a plurality of different categories, such as high QoS time slots, high capacity time slots, and balanced time slots. Each category is associated with a different level of QoS. QoS information with respect to a user is obtained in response to a radio resource request received from the user. The user is associated with a particular category of time slots based on the QoS information of the user.
