  • Patent number: 7170877
Abstract: A method and system for managing radio resources in a time-slotted wireless communication system is based on the quality of service (QoS) information of a user. A plurality of time slots of a radio resource are sorted into a plurality of different categories, such as high QoS time slots, high capacity time slots, and balanced time slots. Each category is associated with a different level of QoS. QoS information with respect to a user is obtained in response to a radio resource request received from the user. The user is associated with a particular category of time slots based on the QoS information of the user.

  • Patent number: 7126939
Abstract: A communications system includes a wireless access network that is coupled to a packet-based data network. Packet-based calls may be established between a mobile station coupled to the wireless access network and a network endpoint coupled to the data network. For efficient call setup and call release, call control signaling, such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) messages and Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) messages, are carried in traffic channels over the wireless access network.

  • Patent number: 7085228
Abstract: In a wireless communication system including an access point and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU), a method for adaptive radio resource management begins by examining a frame error rate value of a WTRU. Then, a channel utilization value of the WTRU and a current data rate of the WTRU are examined. System parameters for the WTRU are adjusted based on the examined variables.

  • Patent number: 7068623
Abstract: A mobile communications system includes a radio access network, such as an Enhanced General Packet Radio Service (EGPRS) network, in which mobile stations are able to enter into a discontinuous transmission (DTX) mode. During DTX mode of a first mobile station that is allocated a channel portion (e.g., a time slot of a frame), the radio access network is able to multiplex traffic from another mobile station onto the same channel portion. A mechanism is provided to enable the first mobile station to send a request for re-allocation of the channel portion. The request includes a Real-Time FastAssociated Control Channel (RTFACCH) resource request message (RTRRM). In response to the RTRRM, the radio access network sends an RTFACCH resource assignment message (RTUAM).

  • Patent number: 7010329
Abstract: A method for battery conservation in a wireless communication system begins with requesting a battery level measurement from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) by a radio network controller (RNC). The battery level is measured at the WTRU and is reported to the RNC. The battery level measurement is stored in the RNC, where it can be accessed by radio resource management (RRM) procedures. The battery level measurement is applied to the RRM procedures by making adjustments to the procedures based on the battery level measurement, whereby the battery of the WTRU is conserved.

  • Patent number: 6958982
Abstract: A method and wireless communication system for requesting and obtaining transmit power control (TPC) information. The system includes at least one access point (AP) and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). When the AP decides to adapt the transmit power level of the WTRU, the AP transmits a TPC request frame to the WTRU. In response to receiving the TPC request frame, the WTRU performs one or more physical measurements and sends a TPC report frame back to the AP.

  • Patent number: 6944146
Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in a mobile communications system having a plurality of cell segments includes allocating a plurality of channels to perform communications and defining a plurality of time groups. A channel reuse pattern is provided that is based on the plurality of channel frequencies and the plurality of time groups. Control channels are carried in a different time slot of a frame in each time group. Predetermined time slots are allocated as guard periods to reduce likelihood of interference of signaling due to overlap of time slots in neighboring cell segments. In one arrangement, three channel frequencies are allocated. Further, three or four time groups are defined to provide an effective 3/9 or 4/12 channel reuse pattern. In each time group, control channels are carried in odd time slots of a time-division multiple access (TDMA) frame.

  • Publication number: 20040264393
Abstract: The present invention integrates resource allocation between time division duplex (TDD) and frequency division duplex (FDD) in wireless communication systems. A radio network controller (RNC) receives a radio access bearer (RAB) request from a core network or a wireless receive/transmit unit. The RNC utilizes a TDD-FDD selector to assign radio resources in response to the request. The TDD-FDD selector evaluates various parameters regarding the received RAB request and determines whether it is preferable to assign TDD resources or FDD resources and whether such resources are currently available. Once resources are assigned, system conditions are evaluated to determine whether optimizations may be made to a current resource allocation.

  • Publication number: 20040121743
Abstract: A drifting wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) has an associated drift radio network controller (D-RNC) and an associated servicing radio network controller (S-RNC). The D-RNC sends a request message to the S-RNC requesting measurements of the drifting WTRU. The S-RNC receives the request message and sends an information message with the requested measurements to the D-RNC. The D-RNC receives the information message.

  • Patent number: 6594252
Abstract: A mobile communications system includes a first link and a second link (e.g., a circuit-switched link and a packet-switched link). When a mobile unit is initialized in the mobile communications system, it identifies a first control signal, such as the digital control channel (DCCH) of an IS-136 system, of the first link. From information associated with the first control signal, the mobile unit determines the existence of the second link (e.g., according to 136 HS). From information identifying a current frame structure in the first link, a pointer to the current frame structure of the second link can be derived.

  • Publication number: 20020065081
Abstract: A wireless network includes wireless access systems for communicating with mobile stations. At least one of the wireless access systems is capable of communicating with multiple types of mobile stations. One type of mobile station communicates according to the Enhanced General Packet Radio Service (EGPRS) protocol, while another type of mobile station communicates according to the GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) protocol. The wireless access system includes control logic to select one of plural types of protocol stacks to use for communications over an air link with the different types of mobile stations. In response to an indicator of a first type, the wireless access system selects a first protocol stack, and in response to an indicator of a second type, the wireless access system selects a second protocol stack.

  • Patent number: 6256486
Abstract: A mobile communication system includes cell segments each associated with a base station. The base station includes transceivers capable of communicating over two sets of carriers. A first set of carriers carry circuit-switched traffic, while the second set of carriers carry packet-switched data. Co-channel interference measurements are made by mobile units or by a serving base station in each cell segment during communications of active bursts of traffic or control signaling. Such bursts may include a training sequence that is used by the measuring device to recreate a burst without interference contributions. Co-channel interference is then determined based on the recreated bursts and the received bursts. Multiple interference values may be derived and applied to an averaging filter to calculate the final interference contribution value.

  • Patent number: 6111867
Abstract: A system implements a method of allocating a mobile communications device, such as a mobile end station, to packet channels, such as packet control channels within a cell. A mobile communications device identifies for access a packet channel by executing an algorithm, such as a hashing algorithm. The mobile communications device then reads a loading message broadcast for that packet channel. If the loading message indicates to the mobile communications device that another packet channel or PCCH should be sought, the mobile communications device tunes to a beacon frequency and reads information for each packet channel or PCCH broadcast at the beacon frequency. The mobile then tunes to a suitable channel. The processing to select a suitable channel is accomplished in the mobile communications device, thereby relieving other system elements, such as the mobile data base station (MDBS) from carrying out that processing and reducing the information traffic on overloaded channels.
