  • Publication number: 20090220633
Abstract: Methods for making extrusion dies using a LIGA process, a German acronym for lithography (Lithographie), electroplating (Galvanoformung), and molding (Abformung), are described. The resulting extrusion dies can be used, for example, for extrusion of cellular ceramic substrates, precision extrusion of optical fiber or optical fiber precursors, or other applications where profile extrusion requires high dimensional precision and/or has otherwise intricate patterns.

  • Patent number: 7560151
Abstract: The present invention provides compositions useful as a barrier layer in, for example, packaging products. The compositions generally comprise a blend of (i) a polyester resin, preferably an aromatic polyester resin such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and (ii) a polyamide material (e.g., MXD6). The blend optionally may further comprise (iii) an oxygen scavenging material. The present invention also provides containers (e.g., containers formed by expansion of preforms) having a multilayered body-forming portion including: a core layer comprising the aforementioned blend; and inner and outer layers of a formable polymer composition. The present invention also provides methods of making such containers.

  • Patent number: 7540072
Abstract: The use of coextruded or integral sealing ribs on zipper flanges enhances the quality of the sealing between the flanges and the walls of a reclosable package. The coextruded sealing ribs may be made from sealing resins or similar materials. Additionally, grip strips are placed on the opposite side of the flanges from the ribs in order to improve the quality of the sealing even further and to inhibit inner flange sealing.

  • Patent number: 7536069
Abstract: The present invention is a method and an apparatus for resonant coupling in photonic crystal circuits. In one embodiment, a photonic crystal device comprises a substrate having a plurality of apertures formed therethrough, a photonic crystal circuit (e.g., formed by “removing” a series of apertures), and a strip waveguide extending through the apertures and coupled to the photonic crystal circuit via a surface localized photonic state formed at a surface of the photonic crystal (e.g., in the apertures). The surface localized photonic state facilitates the efficient resonant tunneling of photons from the wavelength-independent strip waveguide to the wavelength-selective photonic crystal circuit, thereby improving the filtering capabilities of the photonic crystal device.

  • Patent number: 7515793
Abstract: The present invention is a waveguide photodetector. In one embodiment, the waveguide photodetector includes a waveguide layer where light is guided or is confined and a detection layer formed on the waveguide layer where guided light is detected. Each of the waveguide layer and the detection layer allows for the guiding of no more than a single mode of light for a given polarization. In another embodiment, the waveguide photodetector includes a waveguide layer where light is guided or is confined, a detection layer formed on the waveguide layer where guided light is detected, a first electrical contact coupled to the detection layer, and a second electrical contact coupled to the detection layer. The first electrical contact and the second electrical contact are disposed in a spaced-apart, substantially parallel manner relative to each other.

  • Publication number: 20090086620
Abstract: A resiliency-link having a master node and slave nodes may be used to automatically avoid network conflicts due to failure of a node stack. Any stack stub formed as a result of the failure of a stack node or link may use the resiliency-link to determine whether the stack Master node is still online and providing service. If communication over the resiliency-link determines that the original Master node is offline, a new stack stub takes over and provides the desired service. If the original Master node is still online, then the new stack stub takes an appropriate alternative or fallback action.

  • Publication number: 20080313863
Abstract: The water-resistant or waterproof zipper includes first and second profiles which are interlocked or separated by the movement of a slider. The first sidewall of the slider is generally planar while the second sidewall is generally curved so that the sidewalls are relatively closer together at the closing end and generally further apart at the opening end. A triangular island and separating plow are formed at the opening end to separate the first and second profiles. The slider includes various channels which engage corresponding rails in the profiles in order to properly position the profiles. The slider further includes various protrusions and a flange to properly position the profiles.

  • Publication number: 20080159664
Abstract: A reclosable bag that can be hermetically sealed. The bag comprises a pair of zipper strips that are joined in respective zones without substantial deformation of the longitudinal profiled closure elements. These zones of zipper strip joinder assist in providing a leakproof transition from the openable section of the zipper to the corner seals, where the longitudinal profiled closure elements are either substantially deformed (e.g., crushed) or absent. The method of manufacture involves the steps of ultrasonically welding a wide area and then thermally crushing a narrower area overlapping the wide welded area to form leakproof zipper joints. This method can be applied to string (flangeless) zippers as well as flanged zippers.

  • Publication number: 20070212654
Abstract: A method of lithography is disclosed, which allows for independent resist process optimization of two or more exposure steps that are performed on a single resist layer. By providing for a separate post-exposure bake after each resist exposure step, pattern resolution for each exposure can be optimized. The method can generally be used with different lithographic techniques, and is well-suited for hybrid lithography. It has been applied to the fabrication of a device, in which the active area and the gate levels are defined in separate mask levels using hybrid lithography with an e-beam source and a 248 nm source respectively. Conditions for post-exposure bakes after the two exposure steps are independently adjusted to provide for optimized results.
