  • Patent number: 8363622
Abstract: Exemplary methods and systems may be used by a mobile station to request that a sector be removed from its active set, and by a radio access network (RAN) to facilitate such a request. An exemplary method involves (a) a mobile station receiving a congestion indicator in each active sector of an active set of the mobile station, wherein the congestion indicators are received from a RAN; (b) the mobile station using the received congestion indicators as a basis for selecting at least one high-congestion sector from the active set; and (c) the mobile station providing an indication of the at least one high-congestion sector to the RAN. Further, the mobile station may perform steps (b)-(c) in response to a determination that the battery power for the mobile station is below the threshold level.

  • Patent number: 8358634
Abstract: What is disclosed is a method of operating a wireless communication system, wherein a series of repeating overhead time cycles each comprise a plurality of time slots, and wherein the wireless communication system exchanges overhead information with wireless communication devices during individual ones of the time slots. The method includes assigning one of the overhead time cycles to one of the wireless communication devices, wherein the one of the wireless communication devices monitors the overhead time slots during the assigned one of the overhead time cycles and does not monitor the overhead time slots during the non-assigned overhead time cycles. The method also includes exchanging user communications with the wireless communication devices, monitoring loading information for the overhead time cycles, and monitoring movement information of the one of the wireless communication devices.

  • Patent number: 8358888
Abstract: A technique is described for generating a Bessel beam. An input optical fiber is provided that supports propagation in the fundamental mode. The input fiber is connected to a fiber mode converting device that provides phase matching, at a predetermined excitation wavelength, between the fundamental mode and a selected azimuthally symmetric higher-order mode. As an input to the fiber mode converting device, a coherent light beam is fed through the input optical fiber to provide a fundamental mode input at the excitation wavelength. The fiber mode converting device resonantly excites the selected azimuthally symmetric mode. The azimuthally symmetric mode is provided as a beam output from an endface of the fiber mode converting device to approximate a Bessel beam.

  • Patent number: 8359028
Abstract: Methods and devices for mitigating the impact of handoffs to non-preferred wireless coverage areas are presented. In particular, a RAN may determine that a first wireless communication device (WCD) and a second WCD are contending for a resource of a preferred wireless coverage area, and that both of the WCDs are likely to be handed off to non-preferred wireless coverage area(s) if they are not granted the resource. Both WCDs may be subscribed to a home wireless service provider that also controls and/or operates the preferred wireless coverage area. The RAN may compare historical call length data of the first WCD with historical call length data of the second WCD. Based on the outcome of this comparison, the RAN may allocate the resource to the WCD that would likely incur higher roaming fees to the home wireless service provider if that WCD were to roam to a non-preferred wireless coverage area.

  • Publication number: 20130016681
Abstract: A small base node such as a Home Base Node (HNB), or femto cell, may reduce its transmit power in order to prevent co-channel or adjacent channel interference, or to limit its coverage area. Once the power is set, the HNB signal to a served Home User Equipment (HUE) its transmit Common Pilot Channel (CPICH) transmit power for accurate path loss estimation. When this power is outside of the permissible range, the HNB adjusts other parameters (such as Random Access Channel (RACH) constant value) to compensate for the error in signaled CPICH power, and thus compensate in that process the error in determining path loss. Similarly, if the uplink sensitivity is adjusted, to prevent interference, parameters would also be adjusted and signaled to the HUE to reflect the link imbalance.

  • Publication number: 20130019245
Abstract: A method and system for defining an interface of a service in a service-oriented architecture environment. Definitions of atomic tasks of a request or response operation included in a service are received. Unique identifiers corresponding to the atomic tasks are assigned. A sequence map required to implement the service is received. The sequence map is populated with a sequence of the assigned unique identifiers corresponding to a sequence of the atomic tasks of the operation. At runtime, an interface of the service is automatically and dynamically generated to define the service by reading the sequence of unique identifiers in the populated sequence map and assembling the sequence of the atomic tasks based on the read sequence of unique identifiers.

  • Publication number: 20130010638
Abstract: A Fibre Channel (FC) switch and related methods are provided for merging the FC switch with an existing FC network. During a merge process of a stand-alone switch with an FC network, a first Exchange Fabric Parameters (EFP) frame is sent from the stand-alone switch to an FC switch in the existing FC network. The first EFP frame has an empty domain identifier (ID) list. The stand-alone switch receives a second EFP frame from the FC switch. The second EFP frame contains a domain ID list of domain IDs already in use in the FC network. The stand-alone switch compares the domain ID list in the second EFP frame with a stored list of one or more domain IDs associated with the stand-alone switch to determine if there is a domain ID overlap or conflict. If no conflict is detected, the stand-alone switch merges with the existing network without initiating a Build Fabric phase or a Principal Switch Selection phase that could cause disruption of traffic in the network.

  • Publication number: 20130013622
Abstract: Collaborative-filtering software creates a neighborhood using a map-reduce architecture by pair-wise application of a similarity measure to a sparse matrix of users and items of media designated by the users. The collaborative-filtering software then generates recommendations for a particular user by rating items of media designated by other users in the neighborhood (but not the particular user). The collaborative-filtering software rates the item of media, using a weighted vote of the users in the neighborhood. The weighted vote depends at least in part on the mean similarity of the users in the neighborhood who have designated the item of media. Then the collaborative-filtering software records the item of media as a recommendation for subsequent presentation to the other user, if the rating of the item of media is among the highest in comparison to the ratings of other items of media designated by users in the neighborhood.

  • Patent number: 8346813
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for efficiently searching and navigating XML data stored in a relational database. When storing a collection of XML documents, certain scalar elements may be shredded and stored in a relational table, whereas unstructured data may be stored as a CLOB or BLOB column. The approach includes identifying a reference address to within an XML tree index entry and storing the address in an xmltable index. The tree index entry allows for navigation in all axes. A path-based expression may be evaluated in the context of the reference address of the LOB. The result of the evaluation identifies another XML tree index entry containing a LOB locator used to retrieve the content from the document. The tree index, node index, and secondary function indexes are used together to enhance the performance of querying the XML data.

  • Patent number: 8346829
Abstract: Methods and apparatus which reduce or completely eliminate non-shift based divisions as part of estimating transmitted symbols and/or generating slicing parameters corresponding to two symbol transmission streams in a wireless communication system are described. A linear least squares error estimation filtering module performs symbol estimations and/or slicing parameter generation while avoiding non-shift based division operations. The linear least squares estimation module generates intermediate parameters, and implements equations which facilitate symbol estimation utilizing shift based divisions while avoiding non-shift based divisions.
