  • Patent number: 8418197
Abstract: Content is downloaded to a mobile handheld device (MHD) and buffered on the MHD prior to, and during, viewing. Normal wireless bandwidth varies with atmospheric conditions, distance, obstructions in the path, etc. and hence the speed at which a content-buffer (CB) on the MHD is replenished changes. Because this can result in very low quality viewing experience for the user, the capability for alternate content scheduling provided a micro-splicer is used to enable stored alternate-content or advertisement insertion during periods of low viewing quality, when the CB does not hold sufficient content during the viewing period. This alternate content insertion allows the CB to be refilled before the user resumes content viewing.

  • Publication number: 20110184810
Abstract: The delivery of targeted advertisements (ads) to wireless mobile handheld display devices (MHDDs) with client specific advertisement and dynamic content for response and feedback is becoming important in advertising. As the return for ads on MHDDs becomes higher, there is a push to show larger, complex, and more interactive ads on small displays. This has created a need to maximize the area available for ad viewing. The need also exists for increasing the engagement time of the ads. An embodiment of the invention establishes such capability by providing a rolled up ad display where the banner area is used to present a continuously rolling, rolled up ad, which is displayed on the screen at the ad spots by unrolling.

  • Publication number: 20110178875
Abstract: The delivery of targeted advertisements (ads) to wireless mobile handheld display devices (MHDDs) with client specific advertisement and dynamic content for response and feedback is becoming important in advertising. As the return for ads on MHDDs becomes higher, there is a push to show larger and more interactive ads on devices that have small displays. This has created a need to maximize the area available for ad viewing. The need for larger viewing area reduces the area available for call-to-action response enabling switches or inserts on the screen for customer interaction. To overcome this deficiency and provide the necessary end-to-end response capability, hot-spots on the ad image are provided as call-to-action response regions without limitation on the ad viewing area. The use of such hot-spots provides users of MHDDs a preferred interaction mechanism for responding to the advertisement, while maintaining a large ad viewing area.

  • Publication number: 20110004892
Abstract: In a targeted advertising system focused advertisements or alternate content is pre-stored on a handheld device, inserted into a multimedia stream at predefined times and points in the content stream for a predefined interval, otherwise referred to as a spot. A micro-splicer, instantiated on a handheld device, enables alternate content rendering, instead of the original program content, at available advertisement spots during program content viewing. The micro-splicer uses metadata to identify the correct alternate content and display it in the correct spot. The micro-splicer also enables switching the display back to the multimedia program content after the end of the alternate content. User viewing and interaction with the alternate content is ensured by instructing the micro-splicer to switch back to multimedia program content only after receipt of predefined user feedback.

  • Publication number: 20100293024
Abstract: A file transferring method and system (FTMS) optimizes delivery of targeted advertisement files (TAF) to different target groups (TG) that consist of mobile handheld display device (MHDD) users. A server transmits small metadata packets containing a transmission schedule, target group identification (TGID), and information on each TAF, such as file identification, checksum, file size, and number of packets in the file to each MHDD which, on receipt of this metadata, checks the TGID in the metadata packet with a pre-stored TGID in the MHDD. If the TGID received matches the TGID stored in the MHDD, then the MHDD downloads and stores the metadata information. The MHDD then wakes-up during scheduled advertisement (AD) file transmission and downloads the TAFs. The MHDD uses the metadata to verify whether all packets of the TAF have been received without error. In case of error or shortfall, the MHDD wakes-up and downloads missing packets during a next scheduled transmission.

  • Publication number: 20100030639
Abstract: Available advertisement spot duration is used to display a plurality of advertisements, and to obtain maximum impact while displaying a plurality of advertisements, within an advertisement spot, where the advertisements are each typically of a fixed duration, the sum of which is the total duration of the advertisement spot. Further optimization is accomplished by using advertisements of optimized duration, the advertisements having a cumulative duration of less than that of the advertisement spot, and by using a static advertisement and/or picture as a filler for the rest of the duration. Because static advertisements and/or pictures do not require a minimum duration for impact, they can be used to fill in the time left over from one or multiple advertisements within an advertisement spot. Embodiments of the invention find particular application for displaying advertisements on mobile handheld devices (MHDDs) to improve the impact of the advertisements.

  • Publication number: 20090316777
Abstract: Advertisements are transferred to mobile handheld displays (MHDs) during slack time, when the spectrum is not busy for download at, and storage on, the MHDs. The stored advertisements are then selectively rendered during available ad spots when the user is viewing content on the MHD. A main code page that comprises all of the pixels that are static within the ad is initially transmitted to the MHD. This transmission is then followed by the transmission of additional packets that include information that only concerns the pixels in the main code page that change from frame to frame, along with information regarding the location of such changes within the code page. There are typically only a small number of changes between frames in an ad, such that only a small amount of information need be transmitted to represent these changes, when compared to the amount of information contained in each frame of the ad.

  • Publication number: 20090319375
Abstract: A time delay that occurs when an application is launched in a mobile handheld display device (MHDD), when the application or content is downloaded, before the MHDD is ready for the user to interact with it, wastes the user's time and, in an embodiment of the invention, this time delay constitutes an interval that is used to display targeted advertisements that are already stored on the MHDD, and that are rendered and displayed to the user on the screen while the user waits for completion of downloading of the application or content to the MHDD. An embodiment of the invention provides a micro-splicer that inserts alternate content for display on an MHDD, and renders and displays pre-stored advertisements during application launch time.

  • Publication number: 20090276312
Abstract: A target specific addressable spot-guide (TASG) comprises meta-data generated from advertisement campaign criteria, the schema of available ad-spots, the characteristics of the ads to be inserted in the ad-spot, and the ad interaction pattern and preferences of the targeted end user. The TASG is transferred into a mobile handheld viewing platform by broadcasting, and is downloaded and stored on the target viewing platform to enable the recognition, filtering, download, and storage of focused ads for a target group. The ads are inserted into the content stream at the appropriate ad-spot, based on the insertion and priority instructions contained in the TASG to enable simultaneous display of different ads by individuals in different target groups during the viewing of the same transmitted content by these individuals on viewing platforms.

  • Publication number: 20090150207
Abstract: An addressable spot-guide (ASG) is the metadata generated from the advertisement (ad) campaign criteria, the schema of the available ad spots and the characteristics of the ad or ads inserted into the ad-spot. The ASG is generated and transferred into the mobile hand-held viewing platform, typically in advance of the content arrival, through any means available. The ASG enables the recognition, filtering, download and storage of ads on the viewing platform of the focused group for which the ad is meant. The ad is inserted into the content stream at the appropriate ad-spot based on the instructions contained in the ASG. As a result of the ASG, individuals in different target groups will view the same content, but different ads that are targeted to their personal characteristics. The ads are prioritized based on importance to the ad campaign.
