  • Patent number: 8445705
Abstract: Described herein are improved methods for the preparation of 5- and 6-membered cyclic mono and diesters of sugar alcohols and anhydrosugar alcohols by reaction with an organic acid RCOOH over a solid acidic substrate. The process is adaptable to a continuous process for simultaneously making and separating the cyclic esters from the sugar alcohols and anhydrosugar alcohols under mild conditions using the solid acid substrate as both the catalyst and a chromatographic bed for separation. The reactions are performed at mild temperatures of 70° C. to 100° C. and the formation of the cyclic esters is nearly quantitative. Also described is a method for making 5- and 6-membered cyclic mono and diesters of sugar alcohols and anhydrosugar alcohols using microwave irradiation in the presence of the organic acid.

  • Patent number: 8398855
Abstract: A waste treatment process comprised of an ammonification system to convert soluble organic nitrogen into ammonia nitrogen, followed by a physico-chemical process to remove a substantial amount of the ammonia as a recovered ammonium sulfate fertilizer or ammonium hydroxide (“aqua ammonia”), and followed by an ammonia oxidation process to oxidize the remaining ammonia from the physico-chemical process. The process reduces ammonia and carbonaceous organic matter to less than 10 mg/l and recovers ammonia in the form of either ammonium sulfate or ammonium hydroxide.

  • Patent number: 8327724
Abstract: Apparatus for preparing a biological sample for PCR analysis has an inlet (4) for receiving the sample (15) and a sieve (13) through which the sample is forced by screwing down an inlet cap (16). A lysis solution between two rupturable seals (11 and 12) is effective to disrupt the cells of the sample and release nucleic acid. The apparatus is mounted releasably on a PCR machine (2) having a motor (2?) releasably coupled with a drive mechanism (3, 36,40) in the apparatus to effect a rotary and a vertical up and down movement of its components (30, 31, 32, 42). The apparatus has a transparent cuvette (5) and a needle (71) extending to the lower end of the cuvette, by which the prepared sample is dispensed to the cuvette for PCR analysis.

  • Patent number: 8126823
Abstract: A computer implemented method of particular, although not exclusive application to analysing a plurality of molecules which comprises computing a kernel function for each pair of the plurality of molecules, the kernel function being representative of the number of features present in both molecules of the pairs and using the kernel function in a kernel based learning algorithm to model the relationship between the features and a property of the molecules. The method is also applicable to predicting a numerical value representing a characteristic of a molecule and, more generally, modelling instances of data in a database. A particular, although again not exclusive application, is the prediction of toxicity of a molecule.

  • Publication number: 20110204566
Abstract: A game layout modifying the traditional game of Roulette includes an additional betting region defining a winning bet for Red & Even, together with a specified payout ratio, and another winning bet based on a single number result, advantageously “0” or “00”, also with a specified payout ratio. The payout ratios are adjusted prior to play by the game operator, advantageously to either ensure an expected payoff ratio for the player, or a slightly higher House advantage for the new region. Another corresponding region defines a winning bet for Black & Odd. The Red & Even and Black & Odd regions are placed next to existing areas marked “Even” and “Odd”, respectively. The regions are adapted for either Single Zero or Double Zero layouts.

  • Publication number: 20100173188
Abstract: The EMS modular battery pack is a convenient and maintainable battery pack that encompasses several modules that are fixed to a rigid structure that carries the battery management system and each module contains several cells which are connected in series via welded leads and are supported mechanically within each module. The division of module facilitates the removal of non-functional cells within the module with ease and the battery pack also provides a battery management system that detects a non functional module using the sensing circuitry built in each module. The modular battery pack design facilitates various configurations of battery pack both electrically and mechanically since any number of modules can be combined to build a battery pack.
