Patent number: 6947242Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and method for dynamic fly height and roll adjustment of a physical asperity sensor (PAS) head. The PAS head is used to test disk asperity heights and mechanical interference (commonly known as glide height and take off height). The PAS may be adjusted through a pivoting device such as a joystick coupled through one or more actuators to the pivoting device by actuator arms. In one embodiment, the actuator is a piezoelectric motor. The PAS head may utilize a detector to indicate the distance of the disk asperity from the PAS head. The method comprises receiving the signal and in response, operating the actuators to adjust the position of the pivoting device to obtain a selected positioning of either the fly height or the roll of the PAS.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 2002Date of Patent: September 20, 2005Assignee: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Hong S. Patent number: 6828836Abstract: Two comparators are arranged to generate a pulse-width modulator (PWM) control pulse. The first comparator is arranged to start the PWM control pulse, while the second comparator is arranged to stop the PWM control pulse. The first comparator can be a high speed CMOS comparator that includes a built-in offset. The first and second comparators can be arranged such that the built-in offset of the first comparator dominates the overall operation at the start of the control pulse. The start of the PWM control pulse is initiated by a ramp voltage and a predetermined reference level instead of a clock edge. The PWM control pulse can be linearly varied down to a zero pulse width. The PWM control pulse may be used to control the on-time of the switching element in a switching-type converter.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2003Date of Patent: December 7, 2004Assignee: National Semiconductor CorporationInventors: Steven Michael Barrow, Robert Kenneth Oppen, Steven Harris

Patent number: 6794917Abstract: The on-time of a pulse signal is controlled by comparing a ramp signal to an input signal that is dynamically selected from two signals. A first operating mode is active when a clock signal is in a first logic state, where the pulse signal is reset. A second operating mode is initiated when the clock signal changes from the first logic state to a second logic state. During the second operating mode, the ramp signal is compared to the first signal. A third operating mode is initiated when the ramp signal exceeds the first signal during the second operating mode. During the third operating mode, the pulse signal is set and the ramp signal is compared to the second signal. The pulse signal is reset when the when the ramp signal exceeds the second signal in the third operating mode such that the on-time of the pulse signal is controlled.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2003Date of Patent: September 21, 2004Assignee: National Semiconductor CorporationInventors: Steven Michael Barrow, Robert Kenneth Oppen, Steven Harris

Publication number: 20030039788Abstract: A recordable cutting mat supporting materials sampled for scientific analysis. Manufactured from extruded flat transparent polymer sheet of variable size and thickness. Source material placed on the cutting mat. Using a sharp cutting device, downward pressure is applied to the material through the cutting device until contact is made between the cutting device and the source material. Downward pressure continues until the cutting device penetrates the source material, making contact with the cutting mat surface. The mat surface is scored, not perforated, with a cut line from the cutting device which leaves a permanent visual record of the shape and location of the cut line produced. This record identifies prior cuts on the mat to avoid when the mat is reused, reducing the potential for cross contamination. The mat may be rinsed with ethanol for reuse or is disposable. The mats are transparent for use with transmitted light.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 15, 2002Publication date: February 27, 2003Inventor: Joel Steven Harris

Patent number: 5892637Abstract: An integrated suspension for a slider in a magnetic storage system has a simplified structure that is relatively easy to manufacture. The novel integrated suspension may be assembled from separate pieces, including a load beam, a flexure and a mounting plate. The load beam provides rigid structural support of the flexure. The flexure includes a flexible member and leads integrally formed thereon. A section of the flexible member is fixedly attached to the load member, and another section having the slider mounted thereon presses against a pivot projection in the load beam for gimbal motions. An interlocking structure is provided to limit the extent of gimbal motions of the flexible member, comprising a tab extending from the flexible member into an aperture in the load beam. Alternatively, a tang is formed in the flexible member which is used to form a clip which serves to limit gimbal motions as it interacts with the load beam.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1996Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: William Woodrow Brooks, Jr., Wesley LeRoy Hillman, Darrell Dean Palmer, Randall George Simmons, Steven Harry Voss, Wing Chun Shum
