Abstract: A method and system for coordinating the use of beam forming between two communicating entities in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The two entities may communicate control information regarding their respective use of beam forming. A correction factor for at least one entity is provided wherein said entity may reduce or withhold its beam adjustment in order to correct any error measured in the alignment of its beam with respect to the beam of the other entity with which it is communicating. Adjustment parameters for adjusting the beams are selected based on conditions surrounding the communication.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for cancelling interference in received signals are disclosed. A receiver includes a knowledge-based interference cancellation unit, a blind interference cancellation unit and a trade-off management unit. The knowledge-based interference cancellation unit cancels interference in the received signals based on pre-known knowledge and the blind interference cancellation unit cancels interference in the received signals without the pre-known knowledge. The trade-off management unit determines a trade-off between knowledge-based interference cancellation and blind interference cancellation, whereby at least one of the knowledge-based interference cancellation and the blind interference cancellation is selectively preformed based on the trade-off. The interference cancellation may be performed by implementing at least one of a successive interference cancellation (SIC), a principal component analysis (PCA) and an independent component analysis (ICA).

  • Patent number: 7190808
Abstract: Signals encoded with watermark information are generated and broadcast into a protected area for capture by illicit recording devices along with their intended targets. An illicit recording in which at least a portion of the broadcast watermark signals are recorded is obtained and correlated with a known position of the broadcast watermark signals to yield the location of illicit recording devices. In an alternate embodiment, a surveillance device, being image and time synchronized with a signal broadcasting device, monitors and records the protected area. Illicit recordings containing the broadcast watermark are obtained and correlated with corresponding recordings taken by the surveillance device to identify the location of illicit recording devices. In an alternate embodiment, the surveillance device further monitors the quality of the broadcast watermark signals and adjusts them accordingly to achieve a desired quality level.

  • Patent number: 7127274
Abstract: In wireless communications, a method and system for enhancing signal decoding capability in null areas uses dithering to break up or modify the null areas. The null areas form in overlapping regions of the beams of two antennas or in overlapping regions of a single signal that is subject to multipath. Dithering is used to spread the null areas over a wider region so that a WTRU in an overlap region will not statically remain within a null area.

  • Patent number: 7127214
Abstract: A method for indicating performance enhancements in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) to a user in a wireless communication system begins with operating a radio link to the WTRU with a performance enhancement active. The operating results with the performance enhancement active are measured. The radio link to the WTRU is operated with the performance enhancement inactive and the operating results with the performance enhancement inactive are measured. The measurements with the performance enhancement active and the performance enhancement inactive are compared, and a display indicator on the WTRU is prepared and displayed, showing the performance difference of the WTRU when the performance enhancement is active and inactive.

  • Patent number: 7035656
Abstract: A network controller for controlling a message over a communication network constantly monitors actually transmitted message from or to a particular user. If the controller determines a particular phrase is transmitted more than a predetermined number of times, the controller updates support data and transmits the data in a compressed format with support data. The network controller may send an updated support data in response to a request from a user equipment. In this way, the present invention reduces the amount of traffic over the network.

  • Patent number: 6992622
Abstract: A wireless communication method and antenna system for determining the direction of arrival (DOA) of received signals in azimuth and elevation, (i.e., in three dimensions), to form a beam for transmitting and receiving signals. The system includes two antenna arrays, each having a plurality of antenna elements, two first stage multi-mode-port matrices, at least one second stage multi-mode-port matrix, an azimuth phase detector, an elevation amplitude detector, a plurality of phase shifters and a transceiver. The antenna arrays and the first stage multi-mode-port matrices form a plurality of orthogonal omni-directional modes. Each of the modes has a characteristic phase set. Two of the modes' phases are used to determine DOA in azimuth. The second stage multi-mode-port matrix forms a sum-mode and a difference-mode used to determine the DOA of the received signals in elevation. A beam is formed in the direction of the received signals by adjusting the phase shifters.

  • Patent number: 6950684
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for a device to quickly determine if data is being sent to it. If no data is being sent to the device, the device may return to a sleep mode so as to conserve energy. The present invention includes organizing and transmitting, one at a time, all device destination identifiers. If a message listing search indicates that no message is being sent for a device, the device can continue with any other activity that needs servicing, or if no other activity is pending, it may shut down to conserve power until the next wake up period arrives. If the search returns a positive indication, the count value when the identifier is found can be used to determine the location of the pointer to the message.

  • Patent number: 6917281
Abstract: Each of a plurality of wireless communication units (102) is pre-programmed (402) with a plurality of orthogonal codes corresponding to a plurality of canned messages, the plurality of orthogonal codes chosen such that when a group of different canned messages are received simultaneously by a wireless processing device (104), thereby producing an interference symbol pattern, the interference symbol pattern provides a non-zero probability of correctly decoding at least some of the group. A portion of the plurality of wireless communication units then detects (404) a triggering event. Each of the portion selects (406) one of the plurality of canned messages as a selected message to be transmitted in response to the triggering event, and transmits (408) one of the plurality of orthogonal codes corresponding to the selected message during a randomly-selected slotted-aloha time slot.

  • Patent number: 6913191
Abstract: Method and apparatus for use in a variety of communications systems providing one or more payment alternatives for communication services and automatically selecting of a group of alternative payment techniques while significantly reducing the amount of interactive activity required from the user. Upon entry of a request to establish communications between calling and called electronic devices, the system initially looks towards a primary service provider. Absent acceptance of the request for service by the primary service provider, for whatever reason, the system automatically reverts to an alternative service provider and/or payment provider by searching data provided by the user and coupled to the electronic device for which a communication link is requested, eliminating the need for any further input by the user in the form of redialing the call, providing data through insertion of a debit or credit card, for example, identifying the alternative payment provider.
