Abstract: A method and system for coordinating the use of beam forming between two communicating entities in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The two entities may communicate control information regarding their respective use of beam forming. A correction factor for at least one entity is provided wherein said entity may reduce or withhold its beam adjustment in order to correct any error measured in the alignment of its beam with respect to the beam of the other entity with which it is communicating. • Publication number: 20040169073
Abstract: Method and apparatus for use in a variety of communications systems providing one or more payment alternatives for communication services and automatically selecting of a group of alternative payment techniques while significantly reducing the amount of interactive activity required from the user. Upon entry of a request to establish communications between calling and called electronic devices, the system initially looks towards a primary service provider. Absent acceptance of the request for service by the primary service provider, for whatever reason, the system automatically reverts to an alternative service provider and/or payment provider by searching data provided by the user and coupled to the electronic device for which a communication link is requested, eliminating the need for any further input by the user in the form of redialing the call, providing data through insertion of a debit or credit card, for example, identifying the alternative payment provider.

  • Publication number: 20040063442
Abstract: A system and method for providing multicast services to UEs enhances battery life and provides for more efficient use of the radio resources. Each service, or a target group for a service, is assigned an identifier. The identifier is associated with a pointer to the transmission of data. Each UE searches for the identifier in order to know when the data will be transmitted. The UEs may receive the pointer from a number of different paging windows. The transmission of the data occurs after the last pointer is transmitted in order to guarantee that all the target UEs receive a pointer to the data prior to the transmission of the data.

  • Publication number: 20040048575
Abstract: In wireless communications, a method and system for enhancing signal decoding capability in null areas uses dithering to break up or modify the null areas. The null areas form in overlapping regions of the beams of two antennas or in overlapping regions of a single signal that is subject to multipath. Dithering is used to spread the null areas over a wider region so that a WTRU in an overlap region will not statically remain within a null area.

  • Publication number: 20040028014
Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and system for efficiently supporting data calls to WTRUs in systems that also support telephony. Various types of data is transmitted on a known schedule which is tightly synchronized to a predetermined time frame. The WTRUs synchronize their wake-up periods to search for data at times when data may or will actually be transmitted to them.

  • Publication number: 20040002342
Abstract: A method and system for transmitting data with reduced message instances is disclosed. A wireless message network uses destination identifiers and message pointers to direct message data to multiple mobile units and avoid duplication of messages. In order to provide increased efficiency in the case of duplicate messages, a pointer to a message may be associated with multiple destination identifiers.

  • Publication number: 20030227873
Abstract: Method and apparatus for controlling switching between a first network such as a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a second network such as a wide area network (WAN) utilizing fuzzy logic in which input data constituting factors in determining the propriety of a switching operation undergoes a fuzzification process wherein inputs are sorted into membership values with associated linguistic variables. A rules engine operates on the membership values generating output membership data which then undergoes “defuzzification” to produce an actionable result.

  • Publication number: 20030207692
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for a device to quickly determine if data is being sent to it. If no data is being sent to the device, the device may return to a sleep mode so as to conserve energy. The present invention includes organizing and transmitting, one at a time, all device destination identifiers. If a message listing search indicates that no message is being sent for a device, the device can continue with any other activity that needs servicing, or if no other activity is pending, it may shut down to conserve power until the next wake up period arrives. If the search returns a positive indication, the count value when the identifier is found can be used to determine the location of the pointer to the message.

  • Patent number: 6594249
Abstract: A controller (112) queues (602) store-and-forward transmissions in corresponding blocks (506) of data having a predetermined length, and sends (604) the blocks of data to a transmitter (116). The transmitter stores (606) the blocks of data in preparation for transmission. The controller then determines (608) a need to transmit the data for a near-real-time transmission. In response, the controller and the transmitter cooperate (610) to replace, at the transmitter, a block of the blocks of data that has been received but has not yet been transmitted, with the data for the near-real-time transmission.

  • Publication number: 20030124977
Abstract: A self-positioning wireless transceiver system increases the communication range of a source device. A plurality of communicatively coupled self-positioning transceivers automatically position themselves with respect to the source device to increase the communication range of the source device. When communicative coupling between the source device and a particular destination device within the increased communication range is detected, the plurality of self-positioning transceivers automatically position themselves and create a communication link between the source device and the destination device. Each of the self-positioning transceivers includes a mobility mechanism that permits the self-positioning transceiver to automatically position itself as necessary to create desired communication links.
