  • Patent number: 8585326
Abstract: A tendon is assembled in a horizontal orientation using connectors or by welding at a weld station on a barge or other vessel located at or near the installation site of a tension leg platform. During assembly, the tendon is pulled away from the assembly vessel and tensioned by a tug or offshore work vessel. When fully assembled, the tendon may be up-ended in a manner similar to a wet-towed tendon, and then either pre-installed using floats or passed over to a TLP which is on-site and ready to receive tendons.

  • Patent number: 8588899
Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel means to use a fundamental model of the parts of the brain that are dysfunctional in Parkinson's disease, and related dynamical diseases of the brain, as part of a feedback control system to modulate the signs and symptoms of disease. Fundamental computational models that embody our knowledge of the anatomy, neurons, and dynamics of the parts of the brain we wish to control, and use those models to reconstruct what is inaccessible to our measurements. Through emulation the controller synchronizes to the parts of the brain we wish to observe and track. By passing simultaneous control pulses to both the model controller, as well as the brain, we control both the model and the brain. The detailed framework to embed fundamental models of the brain within a control scheme to control symptoms of Parkinsons and related dynamical diseases of the brain are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20130305342
Abstract: Generally, aspects of this disclosure are directed to copy protection techniques. Areas in memory may be secured to establish a secure memory area in the memory that is not accessible by unauthorized clients. A request to decode video content stored in the secure memory area may be received. If the video content to be decoded is stored in the secure memory area, a first MMU associated with the hardware decoder may enforce a rule that the video content is to be decoded into one or more output buffers in the secure memory area. A request to display the decoded video content stored in the secure memory area may be received. If the decoded video content is stored in the secure memory area, a second MMU associated with a hardware display processor may enforce a rule that a secure link be established between the hardware display processor and an output device.

  • Patent number: 8582631
Abstract: Management of communication operations of wireless devices is provided. A traffic-control parameter is generated, for example at a base station, indicative of desired aspects of communication operations of the wireless devices. The one or more traffic-control parameters may comprise a delay parameter, such as a maximum value for generating random backoff times, and/or a connection-time parameter, indicative of the maximum length of time a wireless device can hold a connection. A bit sequence indicative of the one or more traffic-control parameters is generated and communicated to the wireless devices. A wireless device determines the traffic-control parameter based on the communicated bit sequence and adapts its operation based thereon.

  • Publication number: 20130279004
Abstract: Highly-compliant polymer-based resonant diffraction gratings, and methods of use thereof, are provided. In one illustrative embodiment, an amount of pressure applied to a grating surface may be determined by straining a grating, adapted to move into a plurality of pitches, to an applied pitch in the plurality of pitches in response to an application of strain onto a surface adjacent the grating. Electromagnetic radiation comprising a plurality of wavelengths may be applied to the grating, and a resonance wavelength, in the plurality of wavelengths, may be identified while the strain is applied to the grating. The amount of strain applied to the grating surface may then be determined based on the resonant wavelength.

  • Patent number: 8550171
Abstract: Flexible hang-off arrangement is provided for a catenary riser suspended from an offshore or inshore platform, which includes floating or fixed platforms, vessels or/and buoys. The bending loads in the top segments of the said riser are reduced by incorporating a pivot at the riser hang-off. Pressure containing welded, bolted, rolled or swaged pipe spools transfer fluids, including hydrocarbons between the riser and the platform. Along significant spool lengths the tangents to the center lines of said spools are orthogonal to and offset from the tangent to the center line of the riser at the hang-off. The said pressure containing spools include arbitrary looped, spiral and helicoidal designs that are subject to torsion.

  • Publication number: 20130256537
Abstract: When constructing a nuclear detector module in a gantry, a plurality of overlapping light guide modules (10) are mounted to the gantry in a spaced-apart fashion, and a plurality of underlapping light guide modules (12) are mounted in between each pair of overlapping light guide modules (10). Each of the underlapping modules and the overlapping modules includes a scintillation crystal array (16) on an interior surface thereof, and a plurality of PMTs on an exterior surface thereof. Overlapping modules (10) have overlapping structures (22) that interface with underlapping structures (18) on the underlapping modules (12) and thereby eliminate a seam directly beneath PMTs that overlap the crystal arrays of both an overlapping module and an underlapping module. Optical grease is used to form a resilient grease coupling and reduce light scatter between the underlapping and overlapping modules.

  • Publication number: 20130252576
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transferring identity information for temporary use by a wireless device, visiting a foreign operator network, is provided. A user is presented, at a kiosk, with an opportunity to download a temporary identity which is recognized by the operator network as belonging to a local subscriber, and the user may make a request for service. In response to the user-generated request for service, local identity information is transferred to the wireless device for use thereby. The transfer is short-range wireless communication from the kiosk to the wireless device. The temporary identity, once installed on the wireless device, makes the wireless device appear as a local subscriber. Upon termination of use, the temporary identity is returned to a pool and usable for another wireless device.
