Publication number: 20130098831Abstract: Membrane elements that use multiple membrane leaves may have a limited total active membrane area due to an increased diameter at the ends of the element. Membrane leaves may comprise a permeate carrier positioned between one or more membrane sheets. Adhesive may be used to seal one or more edges of the membrane leaf. The membrane sheets, permeate carrier and the adhesive contribute to the thickness of the edges of the membrane leaf and the diameter at the ends of the element. A reduced thickness of the edges of the permeate carrier may reduce the diameter at the ends of an element. Another permeate carrier sheet may also be used that is distanced from at least one edge of the membrane sheet so the permeate carrier sheet does not contribute towards the increased diameter at the ends of the element.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 16, 2012Publication date: April 25, 2013Applicant: GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANYInventors: Prashant Vishwanath SHRIKHANDE, Steven John HARROLD, Cha MOUA, Phillip GOEBEL, Yatin TAYALIA, Prasanna Rao DONTULA

Publication number: 20130102919Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel means to use a fundamental model of the parts of the brain that are dysfunctional in Parkinson's disease, and related dynamical diseases of the brain, as part of a feedback control system to modulate the signs and symptoms of disease. Fundamental computational models that embody our knowledge of the anatomy, neurons, and dynamics of the parts of the brain we wish to control, and use those models to reconstruct what is inaccessible to our measurements. Through emulation the controller synchronizes to the parts of the brain we wish to observe and track. By passing simultaneous control pulses to both the model controller, as well as the brain, we control both the model and the brain. The detailed framework to embed fundamental models of the brain within a control scheme to control symptoms of Parkinsons and related dynamical diseases of the brain are disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 23, 2011Publication date: April 25, 2013Inventor: Steven John Schiff

Patent number: 8418640Abstract: A floating vessel is equipped with perforated plates which exhibit both an added-mass effect and a damping effect. The addition of porosity to an added mass plate phase-shifts the added mass force so that it becomes at least partially a damping force which does not depend on large velocities to develop a large damping force. Preferred porosity is in the range of about 5% to about 15% of total plate area. A semi-submersible vessel may have damper plates fitted between its surface-piercing columns, within a support grid in the area between the pontoons and/or extending from the sides of its pontoons. A truss spar offshore platform may have damper plates installed within its truss structure intermediate its hull and ballast tank. Drill ships and similar vessels may be equipped with damper plates extending from the sides of their hulls to reduce both heave and roll.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2011Date of Patent: April 16, 2013Assignee: Seahorse Equipment CorpInventor: Steven John Leverette

Patent number: 8417619Abstract: A disclosed system, method and computer readable storage medium includes mechanism for controlling cascade price movements in an electronic trading system. Price limits control the prices at which traders can place orders. An upper price limit prevents traders from placing orders above the upper limit and a lower price limit prevents traders from placing orders below the lower limit. The gap between the upper limit and the indicative market price as well as the gap between lower limit and the indicative market price is controlled so as to cause a breaking effect on very rapidly changing market price.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2009Date of Patent: April 9, 2013Assignee: Liffe Administration and Management IncorporatedInventors: Robert James Fuller, Steven John Katesmark, Christopher Roy Harrison
