  • Patent number: 6823404
Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus for preventing input/output (I/O) adapters used by an operating system (OS) image, in a logically partitioned data processing system, from fetching or corrupting data from a memory location allocated to another OS image within the data processing system is provided. A hypervisor prevents transmission of data between an input/output adapter in one of the logical partitions and memory locations assigned to other logical partitions during a direct memory access (DMA) operation by assigning each of the input/output adapters a range of I/O bus DMA addresses. The I/O adapters (IOAs) are connected to PCI host bridges via terminal bridges. A single terminal bridge may support multiple IOAs, in which case every terminal bridge has a plurality of sets of range registers, each associated with a respective one of the IOAs to which it is connected. An arbiter is provided which selects one of the input/output adapters to use the PCI bus.

  • Publication number: 20040230861
Abstract: An apparatus, program product and method propagate errors detected in an IO fabric element from an IO fabric that is used to couple a plurality of endpoint IO resources to processing elements in a computer. In particular, such errors are propagated to the endpoint IO resources affected by the IO fabric element in connection with recovering from the errors in the IO fabric element. By doing so, a device driver or other program code used to access each affected IO resources may be permitted to asynchronously recover from the propagated error in its associated IO resource, and often without requiring the recovery from the error in the IO fabric element to wait for recovery to be completed for each of the affected IO resources. In addition, an IO fabric may be dynamically configured to support both recoverable and non-recoverable endpoint IO resources.

  • Publication number: 20040212511
Abstract: A low-level function which enforces logical partitioning establishes a set of virtual indicator lights for certain physical components, the virtual indicator lights being only data in memory, a separate set of virtual indicator lights corresponding to each respective partition. Processes running in a partition can switch and sense the virtual indicator lights corresponding to the partition, but have no direct capability to either switch or to sense the virtual lights of any other partition. The low-level enforcement function alone can switch the state of the physical indicator light, which is generally the logical OR of the virtual indicator lights of the different partitions.

  • Patent number: 6809533
Abstract: A near-field scanning microwave microscope images the permittivity and dielectric tunability of bulk and thin film dielectric samples on a length scale of about 1 micron or less. The microscope is sensitive to the linear permittivity, as well as to non-linear dielectric terms, which can be measured as a function of an applied electric field. A versatile finite element model is used for the system, which allows quantitive results to e obtained. The technique is non-destructive and has broadband (0.1-50 GHz) capability.

  • Patent number: 6808456
Abstract: A constant velocity joint includes outer and inner races with mating part-spherical surfaces in which a single functional set of ball grooves are formed bearing a single torque-transmitting ball which is urged under an applied torque load toward one axial end of the joint. A retainer is carried by one of the two races or the shaft to which they are connected and acts on the ball to maintain the ball within the grooves during all angles of the joint.

  • Publication number: 20040168305
Abstract: An apparatus and method provide for automated converting of a web of a thin patterned catalyst-coated membrane to separate membrane sheets for fuel cell assembly. The membrane typically has a thickness of about one thousandth of an inch. Automated web converting involves transporting, with use of a movable vacuum, an end portion of the membrane web from a first location to a second location. With use of respective first and second vacuums at the first and second locations, and after removal of the movable vacuum, the end portion of the membrane web is releasably secured at the first and second locations. The membrane web is cut within a gap defined between a single catalyst pattern of the membrane web end portion and an adjacent catalyst pattern to produce a membrane sheet. The membrane sheet is precisely positioned to a desired orientation to facilitate subsequent processing of the membrane sheet.

  • Publication number: 20040144668
Abstract: A syringe holder is designed to be thrown away after a single use with the syringe safely captive within. The holder has a barrel (5) into whose rear end a syringe (1) is entered until the rear flange (2) of the syringe seats in a socket (15). Then a gate (16) is hinged in a radial plane through a slot (14) in a thick flange (12) surrounding the socket (15) and snap fastens in a position obstructing rearward movement of the syringe (1). The syringe needle (3) projects forwardly of the barrel (5) and is shrouded by a sleeve (7) captive to the barrel and urged forwards by a spring (6). The sleeve (7) retracts to expose the needle during injection but afterwards, having moved forwards again, it can be rotated to snap fasten to the barrel (5) and be locked in its needle shrouding position. The sleeve (7) can also be adapted to remove a cap or sheath from the needle (3) when, before injection, it is moved backwards and then forwards.

  • Patent number: 6748559
Abstract: A method for managing allocation of network resources within the distributed computer system is provided. Specifically, the network traversal time and the end node response time for requests and/or packets being routed in a switch-connected system area network are utilized to determine the total round trip time for completion of the particular network operation. The sum of the timeout values for all switches that participate in routing the request from a requester (source) to the receptor node (target) is provided to the requester's channel adapter (CA). The time-out values are provided by the switch manufacturer and are sent to a network Subnet Manager (SM) via SM packets (SMP). The timeout values added together represent the SubnetTimeout. The time-out value of the target channel adapter (CA), the ResponseTime, is also provided to the requester. The requester then utilizes one of two timeout equations to calculate the overall response time required for the request to be completed.

  • Publication number: 20040106279
Abstract: A system and method for eliminating interconnect extrusions in vias that are formed during ionized metal plasma processing. By eliminating interconnect extrusions in vias, reliability failures and yield loss are decreased. The extrusions of interconnect metallization occur while wafers are subject to elevated temperatures that cause the internal stresses in the interconnect metallization to transit from a substantially tensile mode to a substantially compressive mode. By controlling the interconnect temperature to be below the temperature at which the interconnect transits from a tensile to a compressive mode, interconnect extrusions in vias are eliminated. The interconnect temperature is controlled by using an actively cooled pedestal in combination with a low temperature IMP deposition process. In addition, the IMP processing time may also be decreased to limit heating of the interconnect.

  • Patent number: 6733395
Abstract: A constant velocity joint assembly comprises outer and inner joint members having engaging contact surfaces which support the joint for articulation about a common center point. The joint members have ball grooves which diverge inwardly of the joint and whose inner and outer ball groove surfaces are axially offset with respect to the center point for urging the balls axially inwardly. A ball retainer is provided within the outer joint member. The ball retainer is spring-biased into engagement with an end of the inner joint member and pivots about the center point of the joint to engage and hold the balls within the ball grooves, maintaining them in a common plane.

  • Patent number: 6733396
Abstract: A constant velocity joint includes a rotatable wheel hub for mounting a wheel of a vehicle which serves as the outer race of the joint. The hub is formed with a through bore that includes a part spherical surface at an inboard end of the hub. An inner joint is installed through the open outboard end and is formed with a plurality of ball grooves whose centers are offset with respect to the center of the joint, forcing balls within the grooves toward the installation end of the hub. A ball retainer device is disposed in the wheel hub bore to retain the balls and seal the joint.
