  • Publication number: 20030086118
Abstract: A fast, raster-based, enhanced, data compression technique for the printing of compound documents, including pre-processing images in an original page description form of the data before the page data is rasterized, greatly improving compressibility. Unscaled image data is filtered before it is rasterized to the final printing resolution. The filtering specifically enables a separate, near loss-less, compression algorithm to operate on a rasterized page description with high compression ratios. A data compression technique enables a system to compress compound document using a relatively fast and simple algorithm with near loss-less print quality.

  • Patent number: 6520345
Abstract: A relay rack assembly for the management of cross-connect products and a multiplicity of wires includes a base and top, each base and top having a plurality of guide portions extending therefrom, each guide portion including an engaging rib. Vertical members are coupled between the base and top by slots disposed in the sides of the vertical members receiving an engaging rib on the base and top. First and second fastener inserts are coupled to both the vertical members and the base and top, respectively, thereby securing the vertical members to the base and top. The attachment of the first and second fastener inserts and the engagement of the engaging ribs of the base and top and the slots of the vertical members supports the vertical members substantially square or perpendicularly to the base and top of the rack.

  • Publication number: 20020180095
Abstract: The present invention discloses the extrusion of a thermally conductive polymer composition containing a continuous core of carbon fiber reinforcing. The material is created in a machine that is configured to hold a spool containing a continuous strand of carbon fiber core material. The carbon fiber strand is unrolled off the spool and is fed into a preheating chamber to bring the temperature of the strand to a pre-designated level. The strand is then fed into a port in an extruding head on a pressure extruding machine. A molten polymer matrix is also fed into the extruding head thereby extruding the polymer matrix onto, around and between the individual carbon fibers contained in the strand. The singular extruded composite strand that emerges from the extrusion head is then cooled and deionized before cutting the composite strand into pellets of a desired length for further processing and use as injection molding feedstock.

  • Publication number: 20020174425
Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method for generating affinity data, i.e. data that indicates the interest of a viewer or user in broadcast information such as a video, audio or data broadcast. Automated or manual selection can be made either at an upstream site or at the set-top box for selecting alternative sources of content based upon the affinity data. Return channels can be provided through upstream transmissions through a cable, Internet connections, etc. to an origination site which may comprise a content provider, a TV studio, a head-end, or other upstream location. Affinity data can be remotely sensed by sensors, that are built in or connected, to the set-top box. Further, affinity data can be manually generated by the viewer or user, by various methods such as manually entering data in response to trigger icons that appear on a video broadcast or audio transmission.

  • Publication number: 20020168974
Abstract: A system and method for adjusting satellite communication signal transmit power for signals transmitted to a localized region within a satellite coverage area utilize real-time information on weather conditions (172) and/or actual path losses (174) within the localized regions to adjust the effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) of the satellite beams (188) to minimize the total radio frequency (RF) power required for transmission. The transmission system may be realized using a variety of antenna types for transmitting spot beams and/or area coverage beams. Representative antenna implementations include multi-beam antennas having a low-level beamforming network and hybrid matrix amplifier system, phased-array with independent input amplitude control and beamsteering for each beam, and a phased-array feeding a confocal imaging system for single broadcast beam per polarization.

  • Publication number: 20020151274
Abstract: An improved satellite communication device and system are provided. The satellite communication device uses yaw or roll-yaw steering to linearize angular track of uplink cells; one-dimensional linear “ratcheting” in an uplink antenna to maintain resource allocation of uplink cells along antenna columns; phased-array downlink antennas which can track earth-fixed downlink cells while compensating for the yaw (or roll-yaw) satellite steering; and variable rate TDMA service among downlink cells in a footprint. As a result, system overhead for performing new resource allocations between satellite handovers is minimized, thereby reducing resource management and increasing system capacity. Flexible bandwidth/capacity assignment of both uplink and downlink resources to earth locations via linear cell ratcheting, uplink RF peaking switch, and data-driven variable-TDMA downlink phased-arrays, is provided.

  • Publication number: 20020133817
Abstract: Viewers of broadcast content are awarded points for responding to events contained in or presented during the broadcast. Points are accumulated and additional points may be awarded for viewing a plurality of episodes or presentations of an advertisement. Points may be redeemed for products or services. Broadcast content may be enhanced to include point event indicators. A software program, downloaded to a receiving unit, processes viewer responses and transfers response information to a server. Processing viewer responses may include a time period in which a viewer response is accepted. Reponses entered at other times, or responses greater than or equal to a predetermined number may be rejected. A website may provide viewer point information and awards information. A tool set allows simplified implementation of a points award program including specification of program name, broadcast content, schedule, events, point values, response time periods, data stored, schedule of storage and storage destination.

  • Publication number: 20020126990
Abstract: A video stream may be edited such that hot spots and their attributes may be added to the video stream. Hot spots and their attributes may be stored in a generic database. A translator may generate the hot spot information in a specific code for a specific application, such as properly formatted for a specific set top box hardware configuration, a specific language, or a specific look and feel of the hot spots. Additionally, a template may be used to define selected parameters of the hot spots, and the template may be changed such that the translator can create enhanced video streams in several different formats based on the templates.
