  • Publication number: 20140201252
Abstract: A method and apparatus for testing operation of a random number generator (RNG) testing circuit are provided. In accordance with at least one embodiment, a first RNG output value obtained from a RNG is stored in a first register. In response to activation of a test mode to simulate a faulty RNG, the first RNG output value is stored in a second register. The first RNG output value in the first register is compared to the first RNG output value in the second register. In response to the comparing, a RNG failure signal is provided at a RNG testing circuit output of the RNG testing circuit. In accordance with at least one embodiment, sequential and combinational logic can simulate a faulty RNG. Accordingly, simulation of a faulty RNG may be performed to test a RNG testing circuit even when the RNG is not faulty.

  • Publication number: 20140200681
Abstract: A neural sensor includes a substrate defining an array of vias passing therethrough, a plurality of conductive surfaces, a light source, a plurality of groups of quantum dot-based luminescence units and a charge-coupled device (CCD) array. Each via allows a neurite to grow therethrough. Each conductive surface is adjacent to a different via and is electrically coupled thereto. The light source directs light toward the substrate. Each group of quantum dot-based luminescence units extends upwardly from a different one of the conductive surfaces generates light at a different predetermined wavelength when excited with light from the light source. Each luminescence unit changes its luminescence when electrically stimulated by a neural potential generated by a neurite. The CCD detects luminescence from each of the plurality of groups of quantum dot-based luminescence units and generates a signal representative of intensity of each wavelength of light detected.

  • Publication number: 20140201508
Abstract: Embodiments relate to confidence threshold-based opposing path execution for branch prediction. An aspect includes determining a branch prediction for a first branch instruction that is encountered during execution of a first thread, wherein the branch prediction indicates a primary path and an opposing path for the first branch instruction. Another aspect includes executing the primary path by the first thread. Another aspect includes determining a confidence of the branch prediction and comparing the confidence of the branch prediction to a confidence threshold. Yet another aspect includes, based on the confidence of the branch prediction being less than the confidence threshold, starting a second thread that executes the opposing path of the first branch instruction, wherein the second thread is executed in parallel with the first thread.

  • Publication number: 20140199719
Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for measuring, on a digital microfluidic platform, electrical signals associated with the impedance of adherent cells. In one embodiment, a sub-droplet of cell culture media containing adherent cells is passively dispensed at a pre-selected electrode location where a local hydrophilic surface region is provided, and adherent cells are attached to the local hydrophilic surface region. The cell culture media sub-droplet is replaced with a sub-droplet of a low-conductivity medium in a passive dispensing step, retaining the attached adherent cells. An AC voltage with a suitable frequency is applied between electrodes of the device and a signal associated with the impedance of the adherent cells is obtained. One of the electrodes to which the AC voltage is applied may be a dedicated sensing electrode. The local thickness of a dielectric layer coating the pre-selected electrode may be reduced to increase the detection sensitivity of the device.
