  • Patent number: 8780867
Abstract: A mobile device capable of communicating on multiple radio access networks simultaneously may concurrently operate calls of a first call type on a first network and a second call type on the second network. As the mobile device approaches the limits of the service area of the second network it may take measurements to result in the call of the second call type to be serviced by the serving cell of the first network which is serving the mobile device for the first call type. In this manner the mobile device may ensure that when it leaves the service area of the second network, the calls of the first call type and second call type are served by the same serving cell in the first network.

  • Patent number: 8780351
Abstract: A method for detecting the presence of molecules includes bringing into contact with at least one optical grating comprised of a first liquid phase, a second liquid phase which cannot be mixed with the first liquid phase. The first liquid phase is arranged on a substrate in a form of periodic structures having a periodicity ranging from about 190 nm to about 10 ?m. The molecules to be detected, which are capable of changing the optical characteristics of the at least one optical grating are added to the first liquid phase or to the second liquid phase either before, during or after the bringing step. The presence of molecules is detected by measuring a changed reflection or transmission of light at the at least one optical grating or a changing spatial course of the diffraction pattern as soon as the first liquid phase makes contact with the second liquid phase and with the molecules to be detected.

  • Patent number: 8781125
Abstract: Systems and methods of securely communicating from a sender device to a receiver device on a communication channel are disclosed. One disclosed method is for securely communicating from a sender device to a receiver device on a main channel when an eavesdropper device is listening on an eavesdropper channel. The main channel has an signal-to-noise ratio SNRM, and the eavesdropper channel has a signal-to-noise ratio SNRE. The method comprises encoding a message at a physical layer with a secure error correcting code (SECC) to produce an encoded message, and transmitting the encoded message on the main channel. The SECC has a set of defined characteristics such that when the eavesdropper device is more than a predetermined distance Z from the sender, at least a predefined fraction of the message is unreliable, where the predefined fraction of unreliable bits renders the eavesdropper unable to reliable decode messages on the main channel.

  • Patent number: 8781426
Abstract: Techniques for controlling operation of control loops in a receiver are described. The operation of at least one control loop is modified in conjunction with a change in operating state, which may correspond to a change in linearity state, gain state, operating frequency, antenna configuration, etc. A change in linearity state may occur when jammers are detected and may cause bias current of analog circuit blocks to be adjusted. The at least one control loop to be modified may include a DC loop, an AGC loop, etc. The operation of a control loop may be modified by disabling the control loop or changing its time constant prior to changing operating state, waiting a predetermined amount of time to allow the receiver to settle, and enabling the control loop or restoring its time constant after waiting the predetermined amount of time.

  • Patent number: 8782642
Abstract: A data processing system with data transmit capability comprising an operating system for supporting processes, such that the process are associated with one or more resources and the operating system being arranged to police the accessing by processes of resources so as to inhibit a process from accessing resources with which it is not associated. Part of this system is an interface for interfacing between each process and the operating system and a memory for storing state information for at least one process. The interface may be arranged to analyze instructions from the processes to the operating system, and upon detecting an instruction to re-initialize a process cause state information corresponding to that pre-existing state information to be stored in the memory as state information for the re-initialized process and to be associated with the resource.

  • Patent number: 8779265
Abstract: Systems and methods for collectively generating sound are provided. A sound composition can include multiple component pieces and those component pieces can be divided amongst devices so that the devices can collectively generate the sound composition. For example, each component piece may be assigned to a different device and the each device may provide its assigned component pieces in a synchronized manner so that the overall sound composition is collectively generated. By generating a sound composition in this manner, the network may create new and exciting spatial effects.

  • Patent number: 8778567
Abstract: A bipolar plate used in a fuel cell and a method of making a bipolar plate. The sheet is made from a ferritic or austenitic stainless steel, and defines an undulated surface pattern such that the patterned sheet may be formed into the bipolar plate. In one configuration, a stamping or related metal forming tool operation will further deform the patterned sheet into the bipolar plate shape such that the wall thickness is substantially uniform throughout the surface. In this way, there is a substantial reduction in stretching/thinning/necking at an intersection between bends and side walls that define the undulations of the pattern. In one form, the pattern defines a repeating serpentine shape. In a particular embodiment, the bends may include surface modifications to reduce the effects of sheet-to-tool misalignment.
