  • Publication number: 20080240043
Abstract: A system and method for performing a handover of a mobile station (MS) by considering Quality of Service (QoS) in a broadband mobile communication system. The method can include the steps of: receiving information about one or more neighbor base stations and reception strengths for the neighbor base stations from a Serving Radio Access System (RAS) currently communicating with the MS; extracting a value of a specific field from the received information about the neighbor base stations; combining the extracted value of the specific field with the reception strengths to thereby obtain combined values, and selecting a maximum value among the combined values; and transmitting a handover (handoff) request message to a base station corresponding to the selected maximum value. The system includes an MS that analyzes information about neighbor stations received in a Mobile Neighbor Base-station Advertisement (MOB_NBR_ADV) message to select a target RAS.

  • Patent number: 7408955
Abstract: A GE-PON (Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network) system and media access control method for the same are disclosed. In the GE-PON system, by employing MAC attributes of the gigabit Ethernet frames, an OLT (Optical Line Termination) transmits a downstream window containing both a control frame having timeslot position and size information in association with at least two ONUs and Ethernet frames to an ODN (Optical Distribution Network). The OLT analyzes contents of RAUs in an upstream window transmitted from the ONUs in a TDMA method and received from the ODN, and permits timeslot position and size corresponding to each of the ONUs. A plurality of ONUs, connected to the ODN, have their respective timeslot position and size allocated in response to their respective information contained in the control frame of the downstream window. RAU frames are transmitted having queue information and Ethernet frames associated with the allocated timeslots.

  • Patent number: 7382982
Abstract: An Ethernet-PON integrates broadcast/communication through time division multiplexing, which provides users with high-speed, high-volume communication data and high-quality, real-time digital broadcast/image data. An OLT performs a switching operation on a plurality of digital broadcast/image data received from an external broadcaster according to respective broadcast/image selection information from users, time-division-multiplexes the data into a broadcast/image signal, multiplexes the signal and communication data from an IP network into a frame, and electro-optically converts the frame and transmits to the frame to ONTs through an optical splitter. Each ONT receives and photoelectrically converts the signal from the OLT, and performs frame & time-slot demultiplexing to output the entire received communication signals and broadcast/image information contained in a time-slot assigned to the ONT to a corresponding user.

  • Patent number: 7272316
Abstract: A WDM optical source, in adopting a spectrum-sliced method, advantageously needs neither an optical source with specific generation wavelength nor a wavelength-stabilizing circuit for stabilizing wavelength. Affording high power and a very narrow line width, the WDM optical source can provide a broadcasting service without signal distortion by a chromatic dispersion effect and also avoids the expense of an amplifier and/or external modulator, thereby relieving subscribers of the economical burden. The practical use of WDM-PON and of WDM-PON using an inventive WDM optical source can therefore be brought to fruition and broadcasting service can be provided economically.

  • Publication number: 20070133989
Abstract: In a gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON) system and in a method for bandwidth allocation in a passive optical network (PON) system, a minimum bandwidth is allocated to optical network units (ONUs) for minimal transmission assurance dependent on a traffic characteristic of each ONU, and when there is a traffic-container (T-CONT) class of an ONU not allocated bandwidth after minimum bandwidth allocation to all ONUs, an extra bandwidth remaining after minimum bandwidth allocation is dynamically allocated to each T-CONT class according to a weight of the T-CONT class. Thus, efficient bandwidth allocation, considering fairness between ONUs and priority of each T-CONT, is realized.

  • Publication number: 20070133988
Abstract: In a gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON) and a method for bandwidth allocation in the GPON system, when an optical network unit (ONU) requests a bandwidth less than its preset minimum bandwidth, the requested bandwidth is allocated to the ONU. When there are traffic-container (T-CONT) classes of ONUs not allocated bandwidth after the requested bandwidth allocation, a spare bandwidth after the requested bandwidth allocation is dynamically allocated to the T-CONT class of each ONU according to a weight of each T-CONT class and a percentage of each T-CONT buffer queue. Thus, in the short term, upstream channel transmission according to T-CONT priority in a congested state can be ensured, and, in the long run, network traffic congestion can be prevented.
