  • Patent number: 5016409
Abstract: The present invention concerns apparatus for restraining vibration of a structure having at least one natural mode of vibration. The apparatus comprises an enclosure, a main weight, a resilient member, a viscous liquid, and an adjustment device. The enclosure defines an inner space therein and the main weight has a mass and is enclosed in the enclosure. The resilient member connects the weight to the enclosure and exerts on the weight, a restoring force proportional to the relative displacement of the weight with respect to the enclosure. The viscous liquid is retained in the inner space and has a viscosity which provides to the weight, a damping force which is proportional to a relative velocity of the weight with respect to the enclosure. The resilience of the resilient member and the mass of the main weight provide the apparatus with at least one natural frequency of vibration.

  • Patent number: 4924639
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of restraining vibration of a floor and an apparatus therefor.According to the method, a reservoir is attached to the floor which is supported from structural members of a floor structure and fluid is put in the reservoir. Geometry of the reservoir and depth of the fluid is determined so that sloshing natural frequency of the fluid coincides with a natural frequency of the floor in a same direction. The vibration restraining apparatus according to the present invention is provided with a reservoir wherein a prescribed amount of liquid is retained. Natural sloshing frequency of the liquid in the reservoir is generally equal to a natural frequency of the floor structure. As the floor vibrates because of vibration of the floor structure or vibrational source on the floor, vibrational energy of the floor is transmitted to the liquid and cause sloshing thereto.

  • Patent number: 4894965
Abstract: The present invention provides a vibration restraining structure comprising a pair of wall members defining an inner space therebetween, separation walls separating the inner space into chambers, and a liquid retained in the chambers and having a free surface. The liquid retained in the chambers slosh as the building vibrates. Vibrational energy of the building is transferred to the liquid and generates sloshing thereof. As a result, vibration of the building is restrained. Vibration of the building is restrained most effectively when a natural frequency of the sloshing coincides with a natural frequency of the structure. In other words, the building and the liquid form a unitary oscillating system, and a fundamental vibration mode of the system is a mode wherein sloshing occurs together with a displacement of the building. The method for restraining vibration of a building comprises a step of providing the above-mentioned structures at locations where the model displacement of the building is significant.

  • Patent number: 4875313
Abstract: There is disclosed a device for suppressing vibration of a structure such as building, a bridge and the like. The vibration-suppressing device includes a tank disposed on the structure, a liquid contained in the tank, and damping mechanism disposed within the tank. The amount of the liquid is such that the natural period of the liquid is equal to that of the structure. The damping mechanism is of a net construction. When the structure is vibrated due to earthquake, wind or the like, the liquid in the tank vibrates for a quarter of a period out of phase compared to the structure, thereby suppressing the vibration of the structure. After suppressing the structure's vibration, the vibration of the liquid is effectively dampened as the liquid passes through the mesh of the dampening mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4783940
Abstract: A concrete filled steel tube column which includes: a steel tube connected to beams of a structure so that an axial compressive load is transferred from the beams to the steel tube; and a concrete core, disposed within the steel tube, for bearing an axial compressive load transferred from the beams via the steel tube to the concrete core. The steel tube has a plurality of prestressed tube pieces concentrically joined in series. Each of these tube pieces has an axial prestress introduced into it to counteract a stress resulting from the compressive load applied to the steel tube. With this arrangement, substantially no axial stress is induced in the steel tube. In constructing the column, a steel tube piece is erected, and beams are joined to the tube piece. An axial tensile load is applied to the tube piece so that an axial stress is induced in the tube piece. After the application of the load, concrete is charged into the tube piece.
