  • Publication number: 20030182140
Abstract: To an article manufactured by a maker, an ID recognition unit such as a contactless IC microchip in which a unique article ID is stored is attached. In a data base of an owner registration service company, the article information including the article ID and a current owner of an article are registered for each article. When a user purchases an article from a store, the article ID in the ID recognition unit and the personal information in the card for the article are sent to an authentication organ. When the authentication organ requests an updating of the owner to the owner registration service company by these information, the owner registration service company updates the owner information and the like included in the article information associated with the article ID in the data base.

  • Publication number: 20030007104
Abstract: The field of view of a video camera is set to include electric appliances such as a refrigerator, TV set, air conditioner and lamp installed within a room. When the user operates a remote controller to emit a visible laser beam toward a controlable range including these electric appliances set within this field of view, and designate a certain one of the appliances by the resulting pointer within the controlable range, the video camera for extracting only the visible laser beam of a wave length picks up this pointer, and a control box detects the position of the pointer within the controlable range from the output of the camera so that the appliance designated by this pointer can be detected and remotely controlled by use of the remote controller.

  • Patent number: 6453323
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for resolving long-busy conditions for synchronized data sets. A long-busy condition is detected in a first one of the synchronized data sets. Further access to the first data set is prevented and all subsequent accesses are directed to another, available, second one of the data sets during the long-busy condition. All updates that are made to the second data set during the long-busy condition are identified and stored in a data structure. An untimed read operation is used to determine when the long-busy condition has cleared. Once the long-busy condition is cleared, the first data set is placed into a recovery mode, wherein the identified updates are applied to the first data set. During the recovery mode, the first data set is read-inhibited to prevent read accesses thereto, but the first data set is write-enabled to allow write access thereto.
