  • Patent number: 8382822
Abstract: A valve prosthesis, such as an artificial venous valve, having a support frame and leaf structure comprising one or more leaflets in which the outer edge of each leaflet engages the inner circumference of the bodily passageway along a serpentine path urged against the passageway by an expandable frame, while the inner edges move in response to fluid to restrict retrograde flow. Optionally, one or more elements can extend from the support frame/leaf structure to provide centering support and/or protection from the leaflet adhering to the vessel wall. In one embodiment, the centering support structure comprises a second or third expandable frames attached to and extending from the proximal and/or distal ends of main valve structure and support frame. In another embodiment, one or more support elements extend outward from the valve support frame to engage the vessel wall to provide greater longitudinal stability.

  • Patent number: 8361095
Abstract: A thrombectomy device may include an elongate torsion member having a proximal end and a distal end, and a plurality of helically arranged engagement members disposed at a distal portion of the elongate torsion member. Preferably, at least a portion of the engagement members has a rounded, atraumatic shape. The engagement members have a collapsed state where the engagement members are compressed toward the elongate torsion member, and an expanded state where the engagement members are expanded radially outward. Preferably, the engagement members are attached to and extends radially outward from the elongate torsion member at a different longitudinal point such that the engagement members are spaced longitudinally and circumferentially from each other when in the expanded state. When the thrombectomy device is deployed in a body lumen or cavity, the engagement members expands out to contact a wall of the body lumen or cavity.

  • Publication number: 20130018410
Abstract: A thrombus removal device includes a shaft with a distal end and a proximal end, a sheath with a distal end and a proximal end, and a helical coil attached at a proximal end to the distal end of the shaft and is disposed within the lumen of the sheath in a closed configuration. The helical coil includes a plurality of body portions with turns spaced apart longitudinally and laterally to facilitate screwing the helical coil into a thrombus and also providing an open area into which the thrombus can be captured. A distal tip of the helical coil is provided with a loop, an angle of which is about the same as the angle of at least one body portion. The helical coil assumes an open configuration when the sheath is retracted proximally from the distal tip.

  • Patent number: 8348988
Abstract: An endoluminal prosthetic device for placement in a body lumen is formed by stitching stents to a graft. A first or anchoring stent is used for securing a graft made of biocompatible material that forms at least one lumen. There is also a second stent. The first and second stents each include a plurality of struts and apices between the struts. At least two of the apices in each of the first and second stents are secured to the graft by stitches. A running suture links at least one stitch of the first stent and one stitch of the second stent. The running suture linking the first stent and the second stent adds strength to the stitches and better secures the first stent to the device. The endoluminal prosthetic device may be used in an aortic vessel to treat stenoses or aneurysms.

  • Patent number: 8343204
Abstract: A composite prosthesis (19, 99, 199) and method are disclosed herein. This endoluminal prosthesis is constructed by separately deploying a first prosthesis (9, 201) and a second prosthesis (14, 208), wherein the first prosthesis is deployed and secured to the interior surface of a body lumen (260). In a subsequent step, the second prosthesis is deployed substantially within and secured to the first prosthesis. Although additional prostheses may be deployed within the second prosthesis, in a preferred configuration the first and second prostheses combine to provide all of the necessary attributes associated with a functioning endoluminal prosthesis. Thus, one of the first and second prostheses is permeable to blood and exerts sufficient radial force to cause the composite prosthesis to securely engage an interior surface of the body lumen at one or both of the composite prosthesis's proximal and distal ends, while the other of the first and second prostheses is impermeable to blood flow.

  • Patent number: 8303627
Abstract: A device for closure of a patent foramen ovale. The device includes at least one elongated tissue anchor at the distal end of the device. A distal end portion of the tissue anchor is selectively deployable between a closed position in which the distal end portion of the tissue anchor is capable of penetrating the septum and the flap, and a radially extensible position in which the distal end portion of the tissue anchor is capable of engaging the septum or flap so that the septum and flap may be urged into registry. A deployment member is associated with the tissue anchor for selectively deploying the distal end portion of the tissue anchor between the closed position and the radially extensible position. A closure element is disposed at the distal end of the device. The closure element is engageable with the septum and the flap when the septum and flap are in registry, for maintaining such registry.

  • Patent number: 8267874
Abstract: A wire guide includes a mandrel that has a proximal portion and a distal portion. A coating having a low coefficient of friction is disposed on at least part of the proximal portion and the distal portion of the mandrel, where a part of the proximal portion and distal portion of the mandrel without the coating indicates a marking on the wire guide. This marking on the wire guide allows a user to determine a trimmable length of a catheter, and the low friction coating enables the user to easily advance the catheter over the wire guide.

  • Patent number: 8246651
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of capturing thrombi in a blood vessel, which includes delivering a removable filter in a collapsed state within the blood vessel and deploying the filter to an expanded state within the blood vessel. The filter includes a plurality of primary struts and a plurality of secondary struts emanating from a hub and extending arcuately along a longitudinal axis and linearly radially. Each primary strut has an arcuate segment including first and second curved portions. Each secondary strut includes first and second arcs. The primary struts terminate with an anchoring hook. Each primary strut crosses another primary strut along the longitudinal axis in the collapsed state such that the arcuate segments occupy a first diameter and the anchoring hooks occupy a second diameter, the first diameter being greater than the second diameter for filter retrieval or delivery.

  • Patent number: 8234263
Abstract: A dynamic classification dictionary is built for use in profiling and targeting users for additional relevant content. Behavioral data is gathered from user activity, and user documents and actions are categorized. Author-generated document classification information is analyzed and assigned a first taxonomic noun to characterize the document. User-generated tags characterizing a portion of the document are assigned a second taxonomic noun. Search terms that resulted in the user accessing the document are identified and assigned a third taxonomic noun. Attributes related to the manner in which the document was accessed are evaluated and assigned a fourth taxonomic noun. The document is processed using pattern rules to extract a fifth taxonomic noun. The taxonomic nouns are aggregated into a composite set of taxonomic nouns, and the dynamic classification dictionary is build by storing the composite set of taxonomic nouns.

  • Patent number: 8167901
Abstract: A removable vena cava filter configured for simplified delivery to and retrieval from the vena cava of a patient is disclosed. The filter includes struts configured to be arranged in consistent orientation together between expanded (opened) and collapsed (closed) configurations, thereby minimizing entanglement of the struts. Each of the struts has a circumferential bend relative to the longitudinal axis of the filter. The circumferential bends allow for consistent orientation of the struts when moved between the expanded and collapsed configurations and when placed in the closed configuration of the filter.
