Publication number: 20180244004Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing an optical fiber coupler, having the following method steps: combining two or more light-guiding fibers (1, 2, 3) to form a fiber bundle; introducing the fiber bundle into a capillary (4); collapsing the capillary (4) onto the fiber bundle surrounded by the capillary. It is the object of the invention to provide an improved method for producing an optical fiber coupler. The method is intended to enable the positioning of the fibers within the capillary to be as precise as possible. At the same time, it should be possible to implement the method with comparatively little effort. To this end, the invention proposes that at least one of the fibers (1, 2, 3) is connected at the end to a guide body (5, 5?) whereof the diameter in the direction transversely to the longitudinal extent of the fiber (1, 2, 3) is larger than the diameter of the fiber (1, 2, 3) and smaller than the internal diameter of the capillary (4).Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2016Publication date: August 30, 2018Applicant: Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Forderung der angewand ten Forschung e.V.Inventors: Marco Plotner, Oliver De Vries, Thomas Schreiber

Patent number: 9952940Abstract: Operating a shared nothing cluster system (SNCS) in order to perform a backup of a data element. The SNCS includes at least a first and a second storage node connected via a first network of the SNCS. The first and second storage nodes are configured to store a first set and a second set of blocks, respectively, in which the first and second set of blocks form a single data element. A backup server is connected to the first and second storage nodes, and the backup server includes a backup information table. The first and second storage nodes are configured to act as backup clients in a client-server configuration involving the backup server, upon receiving at the first and the second storage nodes a request to backup the data element. For each node of the first and second storage nodes, the node identifies one or more block sequences of consecutive blocks in a set of blocks of the data element stored in the node.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2015Date of Patent: April 24, 2018Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Christian Bolik, Nils Haustein, Dominic Mueller-Wicke, Thomas Schreiber

Publication number: 20140369640Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing an optical waveguide (1), the surface of which is at least partly coated with a coating material. The coating material contained in a target (4) is removed using laser radiation (6) of a processing laser or converted into another aggregate state. The coating material is then deposited on the surface of the waveguide (1) and forms a coating thereon, said coating modifying the light guidance. It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved method for producing optical waveguides, in which guidance of undesired electromagnetic radiation and/or guidance of radiation in undesired areas of the waveguide is avoided. To this effect, the present invention proposes that the laser radiation (7) reflected from the target (4) or transmitted through the target heats-up the waveguide (1), said laser radiation (6) being polarized and impinging the target (4) at a specified angle (?) between 10° and 80° relative to the surface normal.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2012Publication date: December 18, 2014Applicant: Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Forderung der angewand Forschung e.V.Inventors: Steffen Bohme, Thomas Schreiber, Gerd Harnisch

Publication number: 20140298864Abstract: The invention relates to a method for laser-based splicing of a glass fiber (1) onto an optical component (3), comprising the following steps: arranging both surfaces to be spliced substantially parallel to each other and at a predefined distance from each other; and aiming a laser beam (4) at the optical component (3). In order to specify an improved method in which the properties of the joining partners are maintained to the greatest extent during splicing, which exhibits high reproducibility and in particular is suitable for splicing joining partners of different cross-sections, the invention proposes that the angle of incidence of the laser beam (4) on the surface of the optical component be between 15° and 45°.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 26, 2012Publication date: October 9, 2014Applicant: Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Forderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.Inventors: Steffen Bohme, Thomas Schreiber, Simone Fabian
