  • Patent number: 6777903
Abstract: The present invention provides a robotic gripper mechanism. The invention comprises gripping jaws and a wedge that moves along angled groove between the gripping jaws. The angled grooves are connected to the gripping jaws, and the wedge moves the gripping jaws together and apart as it slides backward and forward along the angled grooves. The wedge also keeps the gripper jaws parallel to each other as they open and close. A motor moves the wedge backward and forward, and guiding surfaces attached to the base prevent the jaws from moving horizontally relative to the base.

  • Patent number: 6754037
Abstract: A storage library suitable for rack-mount and desktop installations. Internally the storage media cartridges and one or more media drives are arranged in a horseshoe configuration. The storage media cartridges are positioned in slots along the left and right sides of the library, and the media drives are positioned adjacent the back side. Additional slots may be provided near the middle of the horseshoe configuration to increase the library's storage capacity. A robotic mechanism is positioned between the two rows of storage media cartridges and operative to transport the storage media cartridges between the media drive and the slots. The slots are arranged so that the storage media cartridges can be installed and removed from the library through an opening provided in the front side of the library. The storage media cartridges are oriented in the slots so that their labels are viewable through the opening. A bar-code reader may be mounted on the robotic assembly to read bar-codes on the labels.

  • Publication number: 20040096301
Abstract: A data storage library and method of operation are disclosed wherein access at least to part of at least one robotic mechanism from the data storage library's exterior is permitted. Access is accomplished through a service port in the library's housing. Access to the storage cells, and thus the data cartridges sitting therein, from the library's exterior is blocked. Blocking access to the storage cells may be provided by a geometry of the service port itself, or by a combination of a door and the robotic mechanism being serviced filling the opening created by the service port. For robotic mechanisms operating on a track, part of the track may be routed through the service port to bring the robotic mechanisms to the exterior of the library for maintenance purposes.

  • Patent number: 6736583
Abstract: A method and system for sharing robotic mechanisms between physically remote storage libraries in an automated storage library system includes routing robotic mechanism guide structures between the storage libraries. The guide structures run through robotic mechanism transfer ports located on the sides of the housing enclosures of the storage libraries. A robotic mechanism within an first storage library moves through the transfer port of the enclosure of the first storage library onto the guide structure. The robotic mechanism then moves out of the enclosure of the first storage library along the guide structure towards a second storage library. The robotic mechanism then moves along the guide structure through the transfer port of the enclosure of the second storage library and into the second storage library for performing operations such as accessing media objects within the second storage library.

  • Patent number: 6722284
Abstract: A steering mechanism for a track-mounted robot is provided. The steering mechanism comprises guide wheels, which are fixed to yokes that pivot around secondary drive wheels. The pivot action of the yokes allows the guide wheels to maintain full contact with the track and steer as the robot traverses straight and curved portions of the track. Linkage components attach the yokes to a cam follower which follows a cam surface in the track in order to force the proper angle of steering for the guide wheels.

  • Patent number: 6698359
Abstract: Operations along a track suffering some track anomaly are resumed by bridging the anomaly with a robotic device. The track supports operation of a plurality of robotic devices. The anomaly prevents the flow of electrical current from reaching an affected section of the track. A robotic device is moved to the anomaly so that electrical current flows into a first pickup on the robotic device located on one side of the anomaly and out of a second pickup on the robotic device located on another side of the anomaly.

  • Patent number: 6671580
Abstract: A system for directing robot movement in a storage library is provided, the library comprising at least one horizontal array of storage cells and at least one robot that moves along the horizontal array and can retrieve objects from and place objects into the storage cells. The system comprises a guide rail that runs along the length of the horizontal array and loops around from one end of the horizontal array to the other end. The robot may move along the guide rail in a continuous, unidirectional loop. If multiple robots are added to the library, they can be made to move in the same direction along looping guide rail, thus elimination contention among robot movements. If multiple horizontal arrays are stacked vertically within the library, the looping guide rail allows robots to loop around and return to the same level or move onto a different horizontal level.

  • Patent number: 6639879
Abstract: A system for scaling robotic mechanisms in a storage library is provided. The invention comprises a plurality of storage cell rows and a plurality of robots coupled to guide rails, which allow the robots to move along the rows of storage cells. The robots have picker mechanisms that can manipulate items in the storage cells, and displacement mechanisms that allow the pickers to move between rows of storage cells. The displacement mechanisms on the robots are configurable to allow the picker mechanisms to access a specified number of storage cell rows. The displacement mechanisms of the robots can be reconfigured in order to change the number of storage cell rows covered by a single robot, and guide rails can be added and removed to accommodate different numbers and sizes of robots.

  • Patent number: 6609046
Abstract: A method and system for selecting a robotic mechanism best suited to perform a job from different types of robotic mechanisms in an automated storage library includes gathering variables in a criteria database to form a decision algorithm. The robotic mechanisms are operable for performing the same types of tasks. The variables include attributes of each robotic mechanism type and attributes of each of the robotic mechanisms, media objects, and media object players. In response to attributes of a job request being transferred into the decision algorithm, the decision algorithm selects a robotic mechanism best suited for performing the job request based on the attributes of each robotic mechanism type and the attributes of the robotic mechanisms, media objects, media object players, and the job request.

  • Patent number: 6591164
Abstract: A “hot spare” method for facilitating the seamless transition from a failed robotic mechanism to backup unit is provided. A spare robot is located inside a storage library on a section of rail (robotic track) from which it can be utilized on any rail layer in a multi-layer architecture. In one embodiment of the present invention, a motorized elevator assembly is used to transport the spare robot to the proper library level, which allows a single redundant robot to support multiple robots on multiple library rail levels. In another embodiment, a hot spare robot is used on each rail level and is utilized if needed on that particular level. In both embodiments, the spare robots are available for immediate backup without direct user intervention.
