  • Publication number: 20030072364
Abstract: A method of determining a quantization parameter for video compression. A block characteristic for blocks in a video frame is quantized and then used to obtain a candidate quantization parameter. With the candidate quantization parameter, a number of bits for the blocks in the video frame is summed, producing a candidate bit rate. If the candidate bit rate is greater than a predetermined bit rate threshold, the candidate quantization parameter is set as the quantization parameter.

  • Publication number: 20030067988
Abstract: A method of locating a half-pixel resolution motion vector. The method first determines a sum of absolute difference for a predetermined number of neighbors to a current pixel. The gradient of these sums of absolute differences is then calculated. A motion vector is then selected based upon the gradient that indicates which vector lies in a direction of steepest descent. This motion vector is then used in motion compensation for video compression.

  • Publication number: 20030053684
Abstract: What is disclosed is method that interpolates missing color components for an original pixel by utilizing color gravities for surrounding blocks of green pixels. A new pixel is output which has complete color information which is a function of the original pixel and interpolated color components. The interpolated pixel is a true representation of both luminance and chrominance information.

  • Publication number: 20030031254
Abstract: A system includes a processor and a memory. The memory stores a program to cause the processor to decompose a first frame of a video into a first set of frequency subbands. The first frame includes a first subimage. The program causes the processor to decompose a second frame of the video into a second set of frequency subbands and selectively compare portions of the first and second frequency subbands to locate a second subimage of the second frame. The second subimage is substantially identical to the first subimage.

Abstract: A Mahalanobis distance measure is used to identify a query image among plural images in a database. The measure may be used to rank the similarity of one or more images to the query image. A variance-covariance matrix is calculated for all images in the database. The variance-covariance matrix is used to calculate the Mahalanobis distance between the query image and one or more images in the database. A range tree may be used to identify likely image candidates for performing the Mahalanobis distance measurement.
