    Abstract: In a continuous process for continuous casting and hot-rolling of metal sheet, off-line storage of a slab takes place in a thermally insulated storage chamber located alongside a thermally insulated zone through which the slab lengths travel in the production line between a cutter for the slab and the hot-rolling mill train. On stoppage of the hot-rolling mill train, at least one slab length is transferred laterally to the off-line thermally insulated storage chamber. To improve ductility, an induction heating stage is combined with a subsequent temperature-maintaining stage in the furnace for homogenization of temperature within the slab. Both these stages are performed on the slab at its casting thickness.

    Abstract: A widthwise bend of an end of a hot-rolled elongate sheet-shaped metal product is corrected while it is hot. The correction comprises simultaneously:(i) holding the edges of the product at at least two positions longitudinally spaced along the product thereby to hold, at least laterally, a portion spaced from the bent end, and(ii) pushing the end portion laterally by means of a laterally moving member. The method may be performed while the product is continuously moving along a path. Both steps (i) and (ii) are performed by rollers rotatable about vertical axes.

    Abstract: A side wall construction for a continuous belt caster includes a metallic side wall body and a refractory layer attached on the central portion of the side wall body. The metallic side wall body has side edge portion extending substantially in flush with the the surface of the refractory layer. The refractory layer is formed with a center projection of essentially triangular cross-section. The height of the peak of the projection is gradually decreased toward downstream of transfer direction of the liquidus and solidus metal. On the other hand, it may be possible to formulate the refractory layer as double layer construction of a heat insulating refractory layer and a wear-resistantive refractory layer.

    Abstract: In a continuous hot rolling system, at least one melt-cut torch is set in a predetermined positional relationship with respect to a trailing end of a preceding hot material and a leading end of an adjacent succeeding hot material. An injected flow of cutting gas from the melt-cut torch is blown against a portion of at least one of the trailing end of the preceding material and the leading end of the succeeding material to melt-cut the portion. The portion extends from an end surface of the one end over a predetermined length. The trailing end of the preceding material and the leading end of the succeeding material are forced against each other and are butt-joined to each other. By doing so, there are produced joining surfaces superior in surface accuracy and high in temperature, to allow joining to be high in accuracy and strength. This joining may be made with respect to slabs before rough rolling, or may be made with respect to bars after rough rolling.

    Abstract: A high speed pickling device for causing a thin plate to travel in acid fluid and removing through pickling oxidized scales which are formed on the surfaces of the thin plate, a plurality of weir members which dam wakes of the acid fluid flowing along the surfaces of the thin plate over substantially the entire width of the thin plate are provided in the traveling direction of the thin plate with a predetermined interval and close to the thin plate.The weir members are provided close to the surfaces of the thin plate for damming and stripping off wakes of the acid fluid flowing along the surface of the thin plate at the inlet sides of these weir members, the acid fluid is caused to deflect in the opposite direction away from the thin plate, and fresh acid fluid is sucked onto its surface at the outlet sides of the weir members along with the traveling of the thin plate.

    Abstract: A plate-like rolled material fed from a continuous casting equipment is rolled by a vertical mill for width control. A pair of horizontal mills are disposed one on each of the entry side and the delivery side of the vertical mill. Both the horizontal mills are controlled in their speeds to impart a predetermined tensile force to the rolled material without effecting thickness control of the rolled material. The roll speed of the horizontal mill disposed on the delivery side is controlled to be higher than that of the horizontal mill disposed on the entry side. This enables preventing of failure in the shape of the rolled material.

    Abstract: When a strip of e.g. hot steel is rolled by a rolling or roughing mill, scale develops on the surface of the strip which must be removed. The strip is passed over a bending roller which bends the strip and causes cracks in the scale. Then water is injected onto the strip to wash the roller and lift of the scale. Inertia then causes the water and scale to leave the surface of the strip and pass to a collection device whose water collecting surface is out of contact with the strip and on the opposite side of the bending roller from where the water is injected. In this way the time of contact of the water with the strip can be kept short and the strip is not damaged by contact with the collection device.

    Abstract: A continuous casting machine is directly coupled to a rolling facility has many machines in a series including the rolling machine disposed downstream of the continuous casting machine. When one of the machines is stopped, the slab is still continuously produced by the continuous casting machine, but is sheared on the upstream side of the rolling machine and coiled in its hot state rather than rolled. Even though the rolling operation is interrupted, all of the slab being produced by the continuous casting machine is coiled so that the molten metal produced for the casting is not wasted. After the machine that has shut the line down is able to be restarted, the slab that has been stored in its hot state is uncoiled and supplied to the downstream machines.

    Abstract: A rolling installation comprises a continuous casting machine, and a light thickness-reduction rolling mill, a width-reduction rolling mill and a thickness-reduction rolling mill which are arranged downstream of the continuous casting machine. The light thickness-reduction rolling mill is driven with a power lower than that required for thickness-reduction rolling by the light thickness-reduction rolling mill. The power deficiency is supplied to the light thickness-reduction rolling mill by the thickness-reduction rolling mill through the cast strip. As a result, a longitudinal tension is applied to the cast strip passing through the width-reduction rolling mill, thereby preventing the cast strip from being buckled and deformed at the width-reduction rolling.

    Abstract: A multi-high rolling mill has upper and lower work rolls, upper and lower backup rolls, and an intermediate roll disposed therebetween. All of the work rolls, backup rolls and intermediate roll are arranged in a perpendicular direction. The intermediate rollers support the work rolls in the direction of a path of the work, and the support rollers support intermediate rollers. Each of the support rollers has a plurality of divisional rollers arranged in the axial direction of the support roller so that the axes of the divisional rollers are spaced from one another in the vertical direction. In other words, the divisional rollers are staggered alternately in the axial direction of the support roller. A space can be secured between each support roller and associated backup roll, to support the associated work roll in the substantially perpendicular direction. The support roller, backup roll, and intermediate roll do not contact each other. This enables the diameter of the work rolls to be minimized.

    Abstract: A casting/rolling installation has a continuous casting machine, a light thickness-reduction rolling mill, a width-reduction rolling mill and a thickness-reduction rolling mill which are arranged downstream of the continuous casting machine. The light thickness-reduction rolling mill is driven with a power lower than that normally required for thickness-reduction rolling. The power needed to compensate for the resultant deficiency is supplied to the light thickness-reduction rolling mill by the thickness-reduction rolling mill through the cast strip. As a result, a longitudinal tension is applied to the cast strip as it passes through the width-reduction rolling mill, thereby preventing the cast strip from buckling and being deformed at the width-reduction rolling mill.

    Abstract: In order to securely hold a moving belt of a continuous casting device against selective movable side walls, a first group of rotatable control rods which are disposed in a first supply header and an adjacent exhaust header are arranged to produce narrow high pressure zones in the film defined between the cooling pad in which the header are formed and the moving belt. These zones can be selectively moved to juxtapose the side walls when the gap between the walls is adjusted. A second group of rotatable control rods which are disposed in second and third supply headers selectively heat the side edges of the belt which are relatively cool as compared with the center section which is exposed to molten metal. As the side walls are moved apart the width of the edge sections which are exposed to pre-heated coolant can be reduced and the amount of normal temperature coolant applied thereto also increased.

    Abstract: An apparatus for effecting a thickness-reduction rolling of a hot thin plate ingot provided with a continuous casting machine and a rolling mill has a widthwise rolling mill disposed between the continuous casting machine and the rolling mill for performing a width-reduction rolling of a thin plate ingot, and a bending device disposed between the widthwise rolling mill and the rolling mill for performing a bending work on the ingot in the longitudinal direction. The widthwise rolling mill applies a widthwise compressive strain to scale formed on the surface of the hot thin plate ingot and the bending device applies strain in the longitudinal direction thereof to thereby form intersecting cracks for fining the scale formed on the surface of the thin plate ingot. The scale is thereafter easily exfoliated by a relatively low pressure water descaling device without excessively lowering the temperature of the ingot.

    Abstract: A roll cooling device for a rolling mill having rolls comprises cooling water guide plates each having a curved surface along a circumferential direction of rolls, the cooling water guide plates being provided close to the rolls, cooling water supply headers for supplying cooling water to cooling water passages defined by the cooling water guide plate and the rolls, water discharge headers for discharging the cooling water, supplied by the water supply headers, from the cooling water passages, support members supporting the cooling water guide plates, and curvature adjusting members for changing curvature of the guide plates in accordance with a diameter of the rolls. A thickness of the guide plate is increased from each edge portion to a central portion of the guide plate in the circumferential direction of the roll. In the case where the roll diameter is largely changed, the clearance between the guide plate and the roll is kept suitably, thereby sufficiently cool the rolls.
