  • Publication number: 20030168836
Abstract: A side airbag apparatus for vehicle has an airbag and an inflator. An upper chamber, a lower chamber, and an intermediate chamber are defined by a seam in the airbag. When the airbag is deployed, the upper chamber corresponds to a shoulder of an occupant, the lower chamber corresponds to a lumbar region of the occupant, and the intermediate chamber corresponds to a thorax of the occupant. The seam guides gas from the inflator to the upper and lower chambers such that the upper and lower chambers are substantially simultaneously inflated, and the intermediate chamber is inflated after a delay. The thickness of the intermediate chamber is less than the thicknesses of the upper and lower chambers. As a result, the occupant of the vehicle is effectively protected.

  • Patent number: 6460877
Abstract: An airbag including an expansion part accommodating inflow of expansion gas to expand a peripheral wall, and linear joining portions arranged in a region of the expansion part and constituted by joining facing portions of the peripheral wall in a linear manner. The linear joining portions include a linear base, curved portions and swelling portions. Each of the curved portions is connected to the base and curvilinearly extends and bends toward the respective base thereof. The swelling portions are arranged at tip ends of the curved portions to smoothly connect outer peripheral edges thereof to outer peripheral edges of the curved portions. With this airbag, stress concentration is reduced around the swelling portions and the curved portions at the time of development and expansion. Thus, the linear joining portions can be arranged without causing breakage of the peripheral wall during development and expansion, and reduction in volume and expansion area held down as much as possible.

  • Publication number: 20020096863
Abstract: In a head protection air bag device, a folded air bag receives inflation gas, and when its inflating operation is completed, inflation parts of front and rear inflatable protective shielding parts as partitioned by partitioning parts generate tensions in the longitudinal direction in the front and rear inflatable protective shielding parts per se. The front and rear inflatable protective shielding parts are interconnected to each other by inflation communicating part under a plate-like portion which blocks the inflow of the inflation gas, at the lower fringe side of the air bag. The inflation communication parts are longitudinally disposed along the lower fringe side of the air bag. Therefore, the front and rear inflatable protective shielding parts are interconnected without reducing the tensions in those parts. As a result, a high tension having the longitudinal direction is generated in the entire lower fringe of the air bag.
