  • Patent number: 6105556
Abstract: There is disclosed a leakage diagnosis of an evaporative system in an internal combustion engine, and more particularly there is disclosed an evaporative system in which a more accurate leakage diagnosis can be effected using a change in the pressure in the evaporative system, and such a diagnosis method is also disclosed. The evaporative system includes a gauge line having a gauge valve, which gauge line branches off from an evaporative gas line or an evaporative gas purge line, and communicates with a point upstream of an engine throttle valve or with the ambient atmosphere, a pressure sensor for detecting the pressure in the evaporative system, and a purge valve. A leakage diagnosis of this system is effected based on detected values of the pressure sensor obtained by opening and closing the purge valve and the gauge valve. Therefore, accurate results of the diagnosis can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 6092368
Abstract: In a diagnostic system for an exhaust gas purifying apparatus in an internal combustion engine, such as a diagnostic system suitable for evaluating the exhaust gas purifying performance of a specific component, as an exhaust gas component concentration corresponding to an operating condition of the engine or an operating condition of the catalyst is detected using an exhaust gas component system, and the evaluation and diagnosis of the exhaust gas purifying apparatus are conducted on the basis of the thus-detected value directly or after subjecting it to an integral processing. With such a diagnostic system, it is not necessary to dispose a sensor upstream of the catalyst in the exhaust gas purifying apparatus, for diagnosis of the catalyst, thus permitting the system to be less expensive, highly durable and afford a high diagnostic accuracy according to operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 6085132
Abstract: A diagnostic and control system first checks the current operation status of the vehicle engine, when a malfunction or abnormal condition is detected by diagnostic sensors. A selection of optimum corrective measures is then made and carried out taking into account the safety of the vehicle, based on current operational status of the engine. • Patent number: 6061624
Abstract: A prescribed threshold level Dth for misfire judgment for each cylinder is recorded in a misfire judgment level retaining means 102 of a misfire judgment processing section 100. A combustion state parameter operation means 106 measures revolution speed of a multi-cylinder engine for each cylinder, and attains as a combustion state parameter a differential in revolution speed between a specific cylinder and other cylinders. In a misfire judgment level correction means 104, a plurality of combustion state parameters concerning the specific cylinder is attained, and the above-mentioned threshold level Dth is corrected as a function of the parameter. A misfire judgment processing means 108 compares the combustion state parameter with the threshold level Dth and diagnoses a combustion state in the specific cylinder. Namely, the corresponding cylinder is judged to be misfire when the combustion state parameter of the specific cylinder exceeds the prescribed parameter.

  • Patent number: 6050087
Abstract: A diagnosis apparatus for diagnosing a catalystic converter of a motor vehicle as to whether the catalyst suffers deterioration by estimating a temperature of the catalyst or that of the exhaust gas in the vicinity of the catalyst on the basis of a plurality of engine parameters to thereby decide deterioration of the catalyst by using as an index the estimated temperature. The apparatus includes a unit for estimating the temperature of the catalyst in a steady state by making use of an engine speed and an engine load which represent typical parameters employed in fuel injection control of the engine. The steady-state temperature facility is realized by storing the engine speeds and the engine loads obtained experimentally in the steady state operation of the engine in the form of a two-dimensional data map.

  • Patent number: 6003309
Abstract: A diagnostic apparatus for exhaust gas clarification apparatus for internal combustion engine diagnoses the individual catalyst independently by an air/fuel ratio sensor mounted before and after the individual catalyst. The individual catalyst is diagnosed by estimating the correlation of the output signals from the air/fuel ratio sensors mounted before and after the individual catalyst. The individual diagnosis operation is performed at distinctive operation regions adequate for their corresponding diagnostic mode. A by-pass route is provided for by-passing the exhaust gas from the upstream catalyst, and a by-pass valve switches the exhaust gas flow into the upstream catalyst or into the by-pass routes. A cross-correlation function calculation valve based upon outputs from air/fuel ratio sensors permits diagnosis of degradation of the overall catalyst.

  • Patent number: 5951618
Abstract: It is intended to detect combustion state of an internal combustion engine over the entire range where positive torque is generated. Time required from a predetermined first crank angle to a second crank angle is measured by detecting a rotation angle of a ring gear or plate with engine speed detecting means 101. Then, a combustion state parameter is calculated from said required time by combustion state detecting means 102 with an established calculation method, and combustion state is determined by combustion state judging means 103. Engine speed correction means 104 determines and feeds back a correction value for the combustion state detecting value to correct the engine speed. At the moment, the correction quantity for correcting the required time is varied so that the normal combustion value of said combustion state parameter is at a predetermined value or less, or within a predetermined range.

  • Patent number: 5921078
Abstract: A diagnostic equipment for an exhaust gas cleaning apparatus installed for an engine, comprising a misfire detector which detects the misfire of the engine, and a secondary-air-system failure detector which detects the failure of a secondary air system. An index corrector corrects a deterioration index calculated by a deterioration-index calculator, in accordance with the detected result of the detector. A deterioration decision unit decides if the diagnostic equipment has failed, by the use of the corrected deterioration index. In a case where the extent of the misfire or the like is severe, a decision interrupter interrupts the decision of the deterioration decision unit. Thus, even when the misfire of the engine or the failure of the secondary air system has occurred, the detection of the deterioration of a catalyst does not err. It is therefore avoided to erroneously replace the catalyst which has not deteriorated yet, or to run the engine in spite of the deterioration of the catalyst.
