  • Patent number: 8768354
Abstract: A method for improved system selection by wireless mobile devices in 3GPP networks is provided. Location data is retrieved by the wireless device to estimate an initial system on which the wireless mobile device will attempt initialization. Using the location data, an absolute radio frequency channel number (ARFCN) associated with the location data is determined from an ARFCN table stored in memory in the wireless mobile device. The wireless mobile device can then perform system selection using the determined ARFCN. A server generates and maintains the ARFCN table which is initially provided to the wireless mobile device at manufacturer, during provisioning or as an over-the-air update.

  • Patent number: 8687586
Abstract: Systems and Method are provided for managing IP sessions based on how many IP sessions are supported. According to an embodiment of the application, the wireless network determines how many IP sessions can be supported for the mobile device residing in a given area such as a routing area, and to transmit to the mobile device an identification of how many IP sessions can be supported. According to another embodiment of the application, the mobile device receives the identification of how many IP sessions can be established, and manages IP sessions based on the identification. Since the mobile device is privy to how many IP sessions can be established, the mobile device is able to properly manage IP sessions.

  • Patent number: 8611946
Abstract: Devices and methods are provided for configuring multi-mode mobile stations. When the number of data sessions available to a multi-mode mobile station changes, the multi-mode mobile station sends information to configuration server sufficient to determine the capability of the network and identify the multi-mode mobile station. The number of data sessions available to a multi-mode mobile station may change for example due to the multi-mode mobile entering a network, changing radio access technologies (RAT) used in the network or changing radio network controllers having the same or a different respective number of data sessions. A configuration server receives the information sent by the multi-mode mobile station and selects configuration information for configuring the multi-mode mobile station to support services/applications that are subscribed to by a user of the multi-mode mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20130308536
Abstract: In one embodiment, a method is provided for customization of a mobile communications device's data session retry mechanism in a wireless packet data service network. The mobile communication device requests activation of a data session with a node via the wireless network and receives a reject message via the wireless network in response to the request for activation of the data session, the reject message including a cause code. If the cause code corresponds to a no-retry behavior of the data session retry mechanism of the mobile communication device, the mobile communications device no longer requesting activation of a data session with the node.

  • Publication number: 20130303149
Abstract: Methods and devices for implementing subsystem or functional aspect restrictions on a wireless handheld communication device. Data defining geographical boundaries of a restricted operating area is stored on the device. The present position of the device is ascertained and a determination is made whether the device is located within the restricted operating area. A restriction on the subsystem or functional aspect is imposed when it is determined the device is within the restricted operating area. The subsystem or functional aspect restriction can be communicated to the device via a wireless communication network. Additionally, the restrictions and boundaries can be communicated to the device as part of an IT security policy.

  • Publication number: 20130290311
Abstract: A method provides search results for a handheld electronic device including an input apparatus having a plurality of input members, each of at least a portion of which have a plurality of characters assigned thereto. A type of the input apparatus is sent from the device to a server. The device receives a number of activations of a number of the input members, and sends the received number of activations to the server. The server determines a number of possible combinations of the characters based upon the received input apparatus type and the received number of activations, searches for a number of search results as a function of the number of possible combinations of the characters, and sends the number of search results to the device. The device receives the number of search results, and displays at least a portion of the number of search results.

  • Patent number: 8532621
Abstract: Techniques in a wireless device for use in accessing a common data application with a service network which is external to a plurality of wireless networks are described. The device receives a data session configuration file which includes a list of the plurality of wireless networks mapped against authentication credentials associated with each wireless network. The device communicates with a current one the wireless networks. The device selects from the list one of the authentication credentials that is associated with the current wireless network. The device submits, via the current wireless network, the selected authentication credentials for establishing a packet data session via the current wireless network. The device then accesses, via the current wireless network using the packet data session, the common data application with the service network which is external to the current wireless network.

  • Patent number: 8515391
Abstract: In one embodiment, a scheme is provided for customization of a mobile communications device's data session retry mechanism in a wireless packet data service network. Upon detecting that a cause code has been returned by a node disposed in a wireless packet data service network, a structure is interrogated to determine if the cause code is mapped to a flag relating to the device's data session retry mechanism. Responsive to determining that the received cause code is mapped as a critical cause code, the data session retry mechanism of the mobile communications device is disabled so that further signaling messages towards the network are prevented.
