  • Patent number: 7933611
Abstract: Methods and devices for implementing subsystem or functional aspect restrictions on a wireless handheld communication device. Data defining geographical boundaries of a restricted operating area is stored on the device. The present position of the device is ascertained and a determination is made whether the device is located within the restricted operating area. A restriction on the subsystem or functional aspect is imposed when it is determined the device is within the restricted operating area. The subsystem or functional aspect restriction can be communicated to the device via a wireless communication network. Additionally, the restrictions and boundaries can be communicated to the device as part of an IT security policy.

  • Publication number: 20110034199
Abstract: A system and method for establishing and maintaining an “always-on” data connection to a wireless network through the use of a back off timer and a service check timer is disclosed. The back off timer is initialized to a determined value when a connection is not established. When the timer expires, a connection attempt is made. As further connection attempts are made, the back off timer is set to ever-increasing values. When the data connection is established, the service check timer is initialized. The data connection status is determined at the expiry of the service check timer. When, at the expiry of the service check timer, the data connection is determined to be lost, the connection method is employed.

  • Publication number: 20110021195
Abstract: A multi-RAT capable wireless device and a method for execution in a multi-RAT capable wireless device are provided. The wireless device maintains a registration history of all wireless network,RAT combinations through which the wireless device has previously attempted to register with data communication service registration point. Upon an event triggering network registration, the wireless device identifies a set of available wireless network,RAT combinations, selects an available wireless network,RAT combination from the set of available wireless network,RAT combinations having regard to the registration history and a preferred network,RAT combination list stored at the wireless device and attempts to register with the data communication service registration point through the available wireless network,RAT combination that has been selected.

  • Publication number: 20100216465
Abstract: Provided is a system and method of wireless network selection based on service offered. The wireless device scans for available wireless networks upon an event triggering registration. If the wireless device determines based on its SIM that none of the available wireless networks are high priority networks for registration, then the wireless device automatically selects an available wireless network for registration based on, for at least one of the available wireless networks that the wireless device previously registered to, whether CS (Circuit Switched) service was rejected but PS (Packet Switched) service was allowed. Next, the wireless device automatically attempts to register with the selected wireless network. In this manner, the wireless device attempts to register with a wireless network that does not reject CS service while allowing PS service. If the wireless device nonetheless registers with such a wireless network, then registration can be reattempted with another available wireless network.

  • Publication number: 20100184433
Abstract: A method for improved system selection by wireless mobile devices in 3GPP networks is provided. Location data is retrieved by the wireless device to estimate an initial system on which the wireless mobile device will attempt initialization. Using the location data, an absolute radio frequency channel number (ARFCN) associated with the location data is determined from an ARFCN table stored in memory in the wireless mobile device. The wireless mobile device can then perform system selection using the determined ARFCN. A server generates and maintains the ARFCN table which is initially provided to the wireless mobile device at manufacturer, during provisioning or as an over-the-air update.

  • Publication number: 20100122325
Abstract: Methods and apparatus of a wireless portable communication device for maintaining appropriate authentication credentials for accessing a data application maintained in a service network are provided. A default access point name (APN) or network access identifier (NAI) is maintained in memory of the wireless device. The wireless device submits, via a default wireless network, the default APN or NAI for establishing a data session in the default wireless network. The wireless device is then able to receive, in the data session via the default wireless network, a message service using the common data application maintained in the service network. In response to a change in service subscription for the wireless device, the wireless device receives, via a current cellular network, a current APN or NAI and stores it in its memory. The wireless device then submits, via the current wireless network, the current APN or NAI for establishing a data session in the current wireless network.

  • Publication number: 20100029220
Abstract: Systems of methods for performing queued and moderated talk groups in a system featuring network provided half duplex communications talk group sessions. For queuing, rather than dropping a talk request from a user which is listening, the request is forwarded and maintained in a list which is the used to grant access to the talk channel. For moderated talk groups, a wireless device is designated to be a moderator network device. The requests for the talk channel are then forwarded to the moderator network device. The moderator network device is equipped with functionality allowing a user of the device to select the order in which devices are granted the talk channel.
